Opis:
The paper presents a question of the Piast state formation based on the changes in the network of settlements, in particular the strongholds. The results of archaeological research, enriched by studies performed by historians, show that the processes of forming the Piast state took a relatively short time and it did not entail a period of competition between local tribal leaders. Its character was revolutionary, which determines the uniqueness of the processes occurring in the Polish lands over a thousand years ago.

The focus of this paper will be on the Jewish experience with Roman art in the late Second Temple period, from Herod’s reign ( 37-4 B.C.E.) to the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 C.E. Herodian architecture of Jerusalem, existing in the archaeological artefacts and the writings of ancient authors, is reflective of both full Jewish participation in Roman art and a level of local conservatism

Opis:
The article focuses on two different categories of Old Polish service peasants, which were connected with operating and maintaining medieval routes (roads) in the Polish state under the early Piast dynasty. The first question, discussed by the authors, refers to the Polish place name Czastary (Wieluń district), which seems to represent a service village, inhabited earlier by “road-workers” (Lat. stratifices) originally called *castari (< Proto-Slavic *cěstarjь, pl. *cěstarji). The second problem concerns Old Polish “bridge-makers”. It is suggested, on the basis of the toponomastical data (see three Polish place names Bierwce, Bierniki and Biernik), that the peasants who were obliged to create bridges or foot-bridges, were called *bi(e)rwci (< Proto-Slavic *brъvьсi) or *bi(e)rwnici (< Proto-Slavic *brъvьnici).

The paper presents a new and up-to-date translation of the Laws of Lipit-Ishtar (ca. 1936–1926 BC) from Sumerian to Polish. Lipit-Ishtar was a ruler of the First Dynasty of Isin, which started the Old Babylonian period in the history of ancient Mesopotamia. Consequently, his laws bear a similarity to the Code of Hammurabi in many respects.

Opis:
The tombs in Modin, described in 1 Maccabees (13:27-29), written towards the end of the 2nd cent. B.C.E., exemplify Hasmonean dynastic rule in Judaea in the following century. The role of the monument was to underline and manifest the importance of the Hasmonean dynasty in ancient time in Judaea. Moreover, the Hasmonean royal tombs in Modin attest to the participation of Jews in Hellenistic culture, the synonym of culture par excellence in that time. The architectural structure of the Hasmonean tombs crowned with pyramids is not unique in the Hellenistic perspective. For example, monuments topped with pyramids have been discovered throughout the Levant. Among the Jerusalem counterparts of the Hasmonean tombs the so-called Tomb of Absalom, the Tomb of Zechariah or the so-called Tombs of the Kings are particularly important. These architectural modules were distinctive for Judaism until the destruction of the Second Temple. Flavius Josephus, a 1st century Jewish historian,  in his descriptions of the Hasmonean royal tombs gives us the picture of Jewish society of the late Second Temple Judaea, who are fundamentally antagonistic towards images. However, the Hasmonean royal tombs in Modin reflect the visual vocabulary of their time which contains popular elements and symbols of power in the Greco-Roman context. The writings of Joshua Ben Sirah and Flavius Josephus, epigraphic and archaeological evidence suggests that Jews fully participated in the Greco-Roman culture of their general environment.

Chinese silk has a long history. The sericulture began in Neolithic times. Before the Western Zhou period (1600-1046 BC) the most popular textiles were plain weaved (juan) and gauzes (sha and luo). During the kingship of the Zhou dynasty (Western and Eastern) new types of textiles began to be woven, for example: pseudo-damasks (qi and han qi) and warp faced compound tabby (jin). The most beautiful four-color, and five-color jin fabrics were woven in Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). In this period China came in contact with the Western world. It was the beginning of the so-called Silk Road. Weaving technique still flourished during the next periods. The first samit textiles (often decorated with Persian motives) were weaved during the Tang dynasty. The sericulture was a ritual practiced in the common households and royal courts. The silkworm had its own temples and goddess.

The article refers to the religious and cultural turning point that took place in the Piast state due to the act of accepting Christianity by the prince Mieszko I (who died in 992) in 966. These issues are presented from the view-point of a controversial interpretation regarding the source foundation and literature, number of which has increased over the decades. The baptism of the historically first Polish ruler was preceded by his marriage with the Czech princess Dobrava (who died in 977), which resulted in the alliance with the Přemyslid monarchy and in the growing connections with Germany along with the conflicts with the Veleti. The consequence of the 966 year’s events was the initiating of the Christianization processes in the whole state of the Piasts and its gradual accessing to the circle of Latin culture. In effect, the grounds for the institutional Church were formed, and the Polish aspirations for being a member of Western culture, which have lasted for all the centuries, were established.

Opis:
The article refers to a problem of relationship between authority and genealogy, and to their specific functioning in the Old Serbian literature, that is in other words, in the hagiographical, historiographical, and hymnic texts. In all those works, the combination of the both ideas undoubtedly serves the ideological creation, regarding the image of sovereign together with the exposition of his extra-ordinary lineage and destiny which are tied to his place and role in the space of history, politics, religion, and culture. In the literature, this peculiar relationship is expressed by the two characteristic constructions of dynasty and genealogy. With regard to this representation, the dynastic construction is based on the model of biblical motif concerning Jesse’s stem and functions as the saint osier of the family of Nemanjić. As for the second construction, of genealogy, it reveals itself as a component of the classical myth of historiography that determines the beginnings namely, the Serbian sovereign’s mythical genesis that also concerns all his charismatic, saint family.

They donate silk produced in their country to the King Hydaspes, so they are usually considered Chinese by commentators. However, the world presented in Heliodorus’ novel is set in the realities of the Roman era and Roman eastern trade, when African countries also participated in trans-oceanic contacts with India. The archetype of the Heliodorus’ Seres can be found in the kingdom of Chera, located in southern India.

Opis:
The Music Collection Department of Wroclaw University Library is in possession of an old print that contains the following inscription: ‘Esaias Reusner | furste Brigischer | Lautenist’. This explicitly indicates the lutenist Esaias Reusner junior (1636-1679), who was born in Lwówek Śląski (Ger. Lówenberg). A comparative analysis of the duct of the handwriting in this inscription and in signatures on letters from 1667 and 1668 shows some convergences between the main elements of the script. However, there are also elements that could exclude the possibility that all the autographs were made by the same person. Consequently, it cannot be confirmed or unequivocally refuted that the inscription is an autograph signature of the lutenist to the court in Brzeg (Ger. Brieg). The old print itself contains a great deal of interesting information, which, in the context of Silesian musical culture of the second half of the seventeenth century and biographical information relating to the lutenist, enable us to become better acquainted with the specific character of this region, including the functioning of music in general, and lute music in particular. The print contains a work by Johann Kessel, a composer and organist from Oleśnica (Ger. Ols), who dedicated it to three brothers of the Piast dynasty: Georg III of Brzeg, Ludwig IV of Legnica and Christian of Legnica. It is a ‘Paean to brotherly unity”, which explains the reference to Psalm 133. Published in Brzeg, for the New Year of 1663, by Christoff Tschorn, the print also includes two poetic texts: a sophisticated elegiac distich in the form of a tautogram and a New Year’s ode. It is beneath these texts that we find the above-mentioned inscription relating to Esaias Reusner Jnr. Regardless of whether the autograph on the print is ascribed to Reusner or not, it does indicate his connection with this print, and probably with Kessel’s composition as well. Consequently, we can discover what kind of repertoire the Silesian lutenist played besides familiar lute pieces by his teachers, his own works, and arrangements of his works for chamber ensemble.

The history of the Tum island is discussed from the beginning of settlements there in the context of the emerging Polish state.
Emperor Basil II, conquering Bulgaria in 1018, divided it into a province managed by Byzantine governors. The Bulgarian church remained under the authority of local priests. Members of the ruling Kometopouloi family received palace titles and appanages, while the other Bulgarian nobles maintained their possessions while serving in the imperial army. After two decades by minister John of Orphanotrophos, attempt to reduce their significance in local military structures and the property tax burden led to the creation of Peter Deljan in 1040-1041. The resignation of Byzantine authorities from damaging the prestige of the Bulgarian aristocracy contributed to the relief of the uprising.

The article presents the transformation of stronghold in Poland in the 12th and 13th centuries. By providing the examples of Kruszwica (Kuyavia) and Ląd (Wielkopolska), attention has been drawn to the fact that, despite the collapse of the strongholds around which gords were once organised, they could continue development and remain political, societal, religious, economic and cultural centres. They allow historians to take a different view of the operations of the then territorial and administrative organisation in Poland as well as the gradual disintegration of the system.
