This paper examines some of the arguments used by archaeologists in favour of collaborating useful for archaeological research and is a form of public engagement with archaeology. It takes as a case study records of 48 600 medieval artefacts removed from archaeological contexts by artefact hunters and recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme in England and Wales. The past and potential uses of these records as an archaeological source are objectively reviewed, together with an assessment of the degree to which they provide mitigation of the damage caused to the otherwise unthreatened archaeological record. It is concluded that, although information can be obtained by studying records of findspots of addressed artefacts such as coins, in general the claims made in support of professional archaeological collaboration with this kind of activity prove to be false.

In this paper, we demonstrate a method for converting Hunspell and related spell-checking lexicons into finite-state automata. We also present a simple way to apply unigram corpus training in order to improve the spellcheckingsuggestionmechanismusingweightedfinite-statetechnology.Whatwe propose is a generic and efficient language-independent framework of weighted finite-stateautomataforspell checkingintypicalopen-sourcesoftware,e.g.Mozilla Firefox, OpenOffice and the Gnome desktop.

Observing the process of the birth of Man of Marble – Man of Iron – Wałęsa. Man of Hope trilogy we can clearly see the author’s increasing tendency to render movie fiction real, in the sense that fiction should be treated as reality, as its equivalent. In the two first films in the trilogy, what is visible is the intensified blurring of the lines between fiction and reality, substituting what is fact with something concocted. What we can also see here is a tendency to boost the credibility of a fictional story, thanks to the use of conventions and documentary materials. Gradual changes made in the sphere of art were connected with the director’s public activities, in which he gradually crossed the boundaries not only of social, but also political praxis. Moreover, in creating the trilogy we can see a voluntaristic trend to perceive the past as the history of “great men” and to canonize the glorious image of history. All these tendencies were expressed in the latter work. Wajda completed this as a clear response to political moves by certain politicians and historians attacking Wałęsa. Preparing a movie about him, he approached verification of historical data with a single-minded attitude. Thus in this film we can observe “true fabrications”. Wałęsa pervades the story, and there is no room for other important figures in the historical process. Additionally, in order to create an imagined, idealistic image of Wałęsa (“Wałęsa 2.0”), the actor playing this role “expels him” from the archive material.

Immigrants in the cities sometimes use architectural means to mark their presence, as well as a separate identity. These activities are often superficial, aesthetic, due to the asymmetry in the means of power in the urban space. On the other side there are the planners, having other plans towards enclaves, and the possibility to introduce them. Urban development is therefore a conflict of interest of different groups, and the result illustrates this dispute. It is a dispute which has a different outcome every time, just as the cultures coexisting in the cities are different, with different needs,identities and history.

A growing trend in digital humanities has been digital scholarship and the emphasis on usage of digital tools and methods in research, teaching, and publishing. Academic libraries as laboratories for humanities scholars (Christine Borgman) need to keep up with these changes. Digital humanities (DH) have become an important area of librarianship and demand for librarians with skills and expertise in metadata creation and control, digital repository management, information organization, intellectual property rights management, research data preservation, and visualization has been on the rise. This paper focuses on the English-language literature presenting visualization of spatial and temporal data in DH projects through rich narratives involving text, interactive maps, and map-enabled spatial data services. Using the examples of digital mapping projects developed and implemented in a large academic library, the article shows a case of big academic library on how spatial and temporal data visualization can be employed to tell stories, promote, and inform about cartographic resources of relevance to DH scholars, and provide self-help tools to empower users.
Cyfrowa nauka i presja na wykorzystanie cyfrowych narzędzi i metod w badaniach naukowych, nauczaniu czy wydawaniu publikacji naukowych stają się coraz bardziej zauważalną tendencją w naukach humanistycznych. Bibliotekom akademickim, pojmowanym jako laboratoria dla badaczy działających w dziedzinach humanistycznych (Christine Borgman), nie pozostaje więc nic innego, jak nadążyć za tymi zmianami. Humanistyka cyfrowa (HC) stała się istotnym obszarem bibliotekarstwa, a zapotrzebowanie na bibliotekarzy posiadających umiejętności i wiedzę potrzebne do tworzenia i zarządzania metadanymi, zarządzania cyfrowymi repozytoriami, organizacji informacji, zarządzania prawami własności intelektualnej, przechowywania i wizualizacji danych – zwiększa się niezmiennie. Artykuł koncentruje się na angielskojęzycznej literaturze przedmiotu przedstawiającej wizualizację danych przestrzennoczasowych w projektach HC poprzez bogaty zestaw narracji obejmujący teksty, interaktywne mapy oraz usługi z aktywnym monitorowaniem danych przestrzennych w kartografii cyfrowej. Na przykładzie projektów wykorzystujących kartografię cyfrową, opracowanych i zastosowanych w dużej bibliotece akademickiej, artykuł przedstawia, w jaki sposób wizualizacje danych przestrzennych i czasowych mogą być zastosowane w bibliotece akademickiej w celu promowania i informowania o zbiorach kartograficznych, którymi zainteresowani są badacze HC, oraz w jaki sposób biblioteka może dostarczyć swoim użytkownikom narzędzi do samodzielnej pracy.

In the psychological works describing the relationship between the individual’s self and consumption, there are many references to the achievements of postmodernists dealing with this issue. Meanwhile, postmodernism understands in a different way than psychologists the basic concepts and mechanisms that allow explaining the relationship between the self and consumption. The aim of this article is to relate the basic statements of postmodernists on the self-creating by consumption of individual living in a postmodern society to the achievements of psychology, and in particular to the psychological understanding of the notion of the self and to the psychological theories and results of research explaining the relationship between the self and consumption. The article describes the definition of identity and lifestyle among postmodernists and presents how, in their opinion, the consumption of goods in postmodern society influences the formation of (unstable) identity. It was then described how identity is defined in psychology in the context of related concepts. The following parts of the article describe selected theoretical models describing the mechanisms of creating the self with the use of consumption and present the results of research testing these models. At the end of the article, conclusions were drawn from the comparison ofthe approach to the relationship between the self and the consumption of postmodernists to the approach of psychologists.

Educating multicultural groups is not easy as a teacher has to deal with students from different cultural backgrounds in limited space and time. Still, it is feasible, provided that we are able to create a positive and trusting classroom environment in which all students are made to feel valued, respected and welcome. The one that combats stereotypes and prejudices allows multiple perspectives and ways of thinking and helps students develop a positive self-image. In such a classroom students can develop not only knowledge and skills, but also multicultural awareness, if only they are willing to coexist and cooperate with each other as well as accept and appreciate their varied backgrounds. Some points that I found to be the keys to success in my applied research are: culturally responsive teaching and differentiated instruction taking into account not only cultural diversity but also different learning styles andpreferences. Apart from their flexibility in the area of methodology, a teacher should use a multisensory approach to appeal to different learning styles.

Dostrzegając w Polsce pilną potrzebę zbudowania systemu umożliwiającego ludziom dorosłym podnoszenie kwalifikacji stosownie do potrzeb gospodarki rynkowej, autorka omawia doświadczenia brytyjskie, które mogą być przydatne w tym przedsięwzięciu. Charakteryzując podejście rządu Wielkiej Brytanii do spraw kształcenia i szkolenia zawodowego autorka przedstawia zasady polityki państwa w tej dziedzinie, tj.: partnerstwo, kompetencyjne podejście do kwalifikacji, decentralizację oraz finansowanie przedmiotowe, a także ukazuje przyjęte priorytety i sposób ich realizacji, koncentrując się na instrumentach motywujących pracodawców, pracowników oraz instytucje edukacyjne. Najwięcej miejsca poświęca jednak procesowi przekształcania centralnej, rządowej organizacji Manpower Service Commission (MSC) w sieć lokalnych Rad Szkolenia i Przedsiębiorczości (Training and Enterprise Councils) oraz charakterystyce i ocenie ich działalności. W ten sposób podkreśla znaczenie decentralizacji dla realizacji nowej strategii szkolenia zawodowego przyjętej przez rząd brytyjski.
Perceiving the urgent in need in Poland to construct a system that would enable adults to raise their qualifications to meet the needs of the market economy, the authoress describes the British experience, which may be helpful in this endeavour. The paper contains a description of the approach of the British government to education and professional training, namely the principles of government policy, i.e. partnership, a result-based approach to qualifications, decentralisation and funding defined as to objective. The article discusses the priorities and the manner of their realisation, which concentrates on instruments to motivate employers, individuals and educational institutions. The most attention is focused on the process of transformation of the central government organisation Manpower Service Commission (MSC) in the network of local Training and Enterprise Councils (TEC) and on an assessment of their activities, thereby emphasizing the importance of decentralisation for accomplishment of the new vocational training strategy adopted by the British government.

The article shows what role the writing instruments, in particular wax tablets, used by St. Cyril the Philosopher, could play in shaping the material form of Glagolitic writing. In this research approach, writing is treated not only as a system of abstract signs, but also as their factual figure formed by a tool on a writing material. In the case of the Glagolitic alphabet, its creation was therefore both a mental and physical process involving objects such as wax tablets. The ease of engraving the shapes of new letters on a soft surface and the possibility of repeatedly erasing them allowed Cyril to experiment with their forms without consuming valuable parchment. Therefore, this process depended mainly on the material properties of the wax produced by honeybees, which was used to cover the wooden tablets designed for writing with a stylus. In this way, these insects participated in the creation of the material dimension of Slavic writing, on a par with people who took the stick from them, choosing the wax from the hives to further process it. This proves that Cyril did not force the Glagolitic letters formed in his mind onto passive material, but that beeshaped, writing wax affordances actively cooperated in this process.

Tematem artykułu jest tworzenie relacji wychowawczych w pracy nauczyciela polonisty. Owa relacja jest podstawą więzi między młodymi a dorosłymi i składa się z kilku elementów. Po pierwsze granice i konsekwencje, jako ramy postępowania obu stron. Po drugie czas, który nauczyciel powinien poświecić uczniowi. Trzecim elementem jest dialog, na który składa się formułowanie przyjaznego komunikatu, umiejętność wyrażania emocji i postawa nastawiona na słuchanie. Specyfikę relacji wychowawczej buduje również styl kierowania klasą, który może być oparty na postawie przyzwalającej, restrykcyjnej lub współpracującej. Całość wieńczy skuteczność działalności nauczyciela, oparta na konkretnych umiejętnościach i świadomości własnych działań.
The theme of the article is to create educational relationships in the work of a Polish language teacher. That relationship is the basis for creating ties between young and adults, and consists of several components. Firstly, boundaries and consequences as a framework for both sides. Secondly, time that the teacher should devote to students. Thirdly, the dialogue, which consists of formulating a friendly message, the ability to express emotions and attitudes focused on listening. The specificity of a educational relationship also builds classroom management style, which may be based on permissive attitude, restrictive or cooperating. The whole is crowned with the effectiveness of teacher performance based on specific skills and self-awareness.

Nowadays, computer technology and social media can be used in certain ways to create positive or negative images of political communicators. More and more people receive political communication with the use of electronic devices via the Internet and social media. The ways in which one can create and transmit images of political communicators have evolved. Companies use new methods of gaining and delivering political information to receivers. At present, information technology is sometimes used not only to send political information but also to manipulate the receivers and change their political views in the fight for support and to win elections. Electronic devices, the Internet and social media, can be used to gain support or to defame political opponents. This paper has been written to bring closer how social media participation, computer technology and software can be utilized to obtain information which then, neatly tailored, can serve as a tool to manipulate political views of addressees of political communication. This article presents the procedure of obtaining, processing and applying information in creating images of politicians by private companies. It also analyzes people’s awareness of ways in which social media communication can be used in creation of political image. Hence, a survey has been conducted to research the participation of university students in social media and their awareness of how the data obtained from them can be used in for political reasons. The paper also explains how incorporating and combining social media platforms, psychology, algorithms, the Internet and cutting edge computer software opened new ways to impact political views with political communication.
