Opis:
Child rights can be considered through the different characteristics of human rights, according to the classification “3P” as Protection, Provision, and Participation. The (potential) distinction between child rights and human rights recalls the former perspective about children’s not seen as human beings. The development of the fields on childhood studies such as “children’s participation” and “agency” are also related to the concept “empowerment,” which indicates the power relations between children and grown-ups. The main purpose of this paper is to debate all those notions through the children’s own experiences by referring to various examples in the frame of Power of children as the Fourth-P right. After discussing how children have the power to “challenge the authority,” I will indicate some examples from Little Review, as a remarkable experience of children’s participation. Lastly, I will try to reveal what today’s children consider the topic of child rights by sharing the findings of a pilot research with children, which I realized in 2019 December. In this study, twelve children who were 11-year-old then, wrote their commentaries about children’s rights and the requirements to have the rights. Thus, in the final part of this paper, the rights will be addressed through children’s perspectives.

Opis:
Matthew Lipman’s P4C (Philosophy for Children) method, which in Poland took the names: philosophising with children, philosophical investigations with children, workshops in philosophy, workshop classes in philosophy, workshops on philosophical research, is based on a discussion in which children are the active participants and creators of the classes. In the course of the investigations, one can observe children’s communication behaviour in the dialogue, the level of language and communication skills, the specificity of the child’s thinking and the ability to negotiate or interpret meanings in a peer group. The conducted research on communication shows that for five- and six-year-old children ‘communication’ is primarily about building relationships and reciprocity of linguistic actions.

Opis:
Forty-seven left-behind children (LB) and 40 non-left-behind children (NL) in rural China were interviewed to evaluate moral, conventional, and personal violations by providing judgments and justifications. The results suggested that both LBs and NLs differentiate the rules of moral, conventional and personal domains. However, there are some differences: 1. The NL considered it acceptable to commit a personal infraction when there was no rue prohibiting it, while the LB considered it wrong; 2. The younger male LBs were more willing to accept situations without moral psychological rules, compared with younger female LBs, older male LBs, and younger male NLs. Age, sex differences were also found. The one out of our expectation is that younger males considered it more acceptable to commit a personal infraction than older males did and believed it all right if there was no explicit rule on it. Meanwhile, in providing reasons to support their judgments or evaluations, the findings revealed that: 1. More often LBs referred to social conventional reasoning even when evaluating moral and personal rules and violations, especially on personal issues; 2. LBs used more justifications of punishment and fewer justifications of personal growth. The implications of the results of the study for children’s moral development and education, especially for LBs, are discussed.

The purpose of this article is to present the protection of children's rights in the light of Polish and international legal regulations. Considerations regarding the legal basis for the protection of children's rights were divided into four parts. The right to be brought up in the family as a basic unit of society was discussed first of all. The next part elaborates on the right to decent social conditions. And the following deliberations are related to the right to education as the right to culture to which each and every child is entitled. The right to live as the inalienable right which is inevitably combined with the right to health protection was described as well.

Janusz Korczak (the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit), writer, doctor, but above all one the best tutors and teachers. Korczak fought for improvement of children’s lives. By his life and convictions he tried to prove that a child is a complete human being, not only a person in the making. Struggling for human dignity of a child, he concentrated his efforts on three areas: dignity of children, the rights of children and their place in a society. We can learn his stance on the situation of children, in the context of the European Children’s Rights Movement at the beginning of the 20th century, when he says: „wzywam o magna charta libertatis, o prawa dziecka” – (“I call for Magna Charta Libertatis, for children’s rights”). The voice of Janusz Korczak in his famous pedagogical essay “Jak kochać dziecko” – (“How to Love a Child”) has retained its significance to the present day. Fighting for children’s rights, the “Old Doctor” (his second pseudonym) concentrated on the position of children in the adults’ world and their mutual relationships. That is why the analysis of the main spheres of activity of the adults and children (family, school, society) is so important today, and consequently, finding the answer to the questions: To what extent are the Korczak’s objectives in the abovementioned spheres realized today? How children’s rights are respected?

The article discusses children’s literature as a matter that can become highly politicized. While often viewed as apolitical, stories for children have always been subjected to hegemonic ideologies and mediated dominant norms. The analysis focuses on gender dimension of this normativity and shows that the attempts to create gender subversive stories for children have to face not only the conservative backlash but they also have to deal with wider cultural context and contemporary meanings of childhood. The last section of the article shows that no matter how gender balanced or stereotypical a story is, the interpretation lies with children themselves. Thus, researchers analyzing messages in children’s stories always have to take into account young readers and their diverse ways of understanding.

Anyone who works with the youth knows that the period of adolescence is a specific life-phase for young students. “Socio-cultural changes, changing family patterns, too many incentives and the social pressure in many areas of human’s life” (p. 252) can cause problems, and teenagers often don’t deal appropriately with their feelings, emotions, and expressions. Also during this time, we have come to expect different and often rebellious, as well as undesirable behaviour from the young boys and girls. Every teacher, educator or someone who takes care of such young people, is inclined to support them effectively and when the functional disorders start to appear, they want to react positively towards them and work together to solve their problems. For those people, I would highly recommend the book “Self-destruction children and youth” written by Beata Ziółkowska and Jowita Wycisk.

Play is a typical and natural activity in children, which introduces it to the real world. It plays an uncommonly important function, thanks to the which the little person learns and gains information about their environment, the properties of objects, social relations or other rules. This area is different in children with autism. In most cases, play is accompanied by significant deficits, and the burden of focus of revalidation influences remains on the development of areas that are more disturbed, such as communication, disturbances in social interactions or behaviour hindering functioning. In course of therapeutic work, we sometimes forget the seemingly trivial activity that the playing of a child may be in view of adults. Considering this, it is worthwhile to take a look at the role ascribe to play by specialists over the years, and what it looks like in autistic children.

Children raised in today’s globalised world face an enormous, globally available and diverse range of verbal and non-verbal messages from the outside every day. In the era of prevailing consumerism, this multitude of information creates new, artificial needs that bring chaos to the children’s world. Human needs, as presented by Maslow, starting with physiological needs, through the need of safety, belonging, love, respect, knowledge and recognition are being redefined and disorganised in common understanding. The following considerations outline the result of the analysis of the content and form of several popular culture texts selected from among all the texts available on the Polish market – the Świerszczyk magazine, aimed at children.

Opis:
In the 1950s the poetry for children involves the elements of language poetry (movement in Polish literature characterized by the domination of linguistic forms over fiction), draws on absurdity, and combines the Interbellum period traditions with the tendencies in literature which began after the events of October 1956. These features are manifested in the works of poets who debuted in the second part of the 1950s, as well as in the poems of prior writers, molded by the pre-war culture and the avantgarde tradition. Books with poetry for children in the late 1950s stimulate imagination and respond to children’s needs to experiment with language, test its flexibility and potential. Also, thanks to the enclosed unique illustrations, the books develop aesthetic sensitivity. Despite the ongoing changes in the outside world, the books haven’t lost their relevance and can successfully be used in teaching.

Opis:
The article features a comparison of two very different collections of stories. What binds these narrations is the way they present the influence of totalitarian regimes on children’s lives. Children of Zion is a set of documents selected by Henryk Grynberg concerning the fate of Jewish children evacuated from the USSR to Palestine by general Władysław Anders. Children of the Gulag is a co-operative work by Cathy Frierson and Semyon S. Vilensky. They used source documents archived by the Memorial Association (Общество Мемориал) and Return (Возвращение), a historical-literary society which was established by Wileński himself. In the article the author aimed to present the main differences between the two totalitarian systems and how the systems caused dehumanization of childhood by means of exhausting labor, starvation, separation from parents and murder. What is more, the article contains a comparison of different attitudes towards the method of presenting historical facts and individual experiences. Hence, the scope of the work lies within discourse of representation / representation discourse.
