    Cognitive performance declines with age following different trajectories. The cognitive trade-off, however, between age and cognitive reserve is still not clear. In addition, bilingualism has been thought to play a role in delaying cognitive decline by affecting cognitive control outside the scope of language. However, the effect has been unreliably reproduced and without exploring sufficiently the differences between cognitive functions that govern language control. In the current study 112 adults varying in age, level of bilingualism and cognitive reserve, completed a modified version of the Simon task, which engaged the mechanisms of interference suppression and shifting. Using ex-Gaussian analysis, the Simon effect was replicated in the normal component and the shifting effect was found in the exponential. Additional linear mixed-effects model analysis showed a significant “negative” effect of bilingualism on inhibition and a “positive” effect of cognitive reserve on shifting, both independent of age. Age affected similarly the speed of engagement of both executive functions irrespectively of language or cognitive background. Implications of a bilingual disadvantage and a beneficial effect of cognitive reserve during ageing are discussed.

    This paper argues for the incorporation of bottom-up activities for English as a foreign language (EFL) listening. It discusses theoretical concepts and pedagogic options for addressing bottom-up aural processing in the EFL classroom as well as how and why teachers may wish to include such activities in lessons. This discussion is augmented by a small-scale classroom-based research project that investigated six activities targeting learners’ bottom-up listening abilities. Learners studying at the lower-intermediate level of a compulsory EFL university course were divided into a treatment group (n = 21) and a contrast group (n = 32). Each group listened to the same audio material and completed listening activities from an assigned textbook. The treatment group also engaged in a set of six bottom-up listening activities using the same material. This quasi-experimental study used dictation and listening proficiency tests before and after the course. Between-group comparisons of t-test results of dictation and listening proficiency tests indicated that improvements for the treatment group were probably due to the BU intervention. In addition, results from a posttreatment survey suggested that learners value explicit bottom- up listening instruction.

    The current research examines the effect of two methods of vocabulary training on reading fluency and comprehension of adult English as second language (ESL) tertiary-bound students. The methods used were isolated vocabulary training (bottom-up reading) and vocabulary training in context (topdown reading). The current exploratory and quasi-experimental study examines the effectiveness of these methods in two intact classes using pre- and posttest measures of students’ reading fluency and comprehension. The results show that bottom-up training had a negative impact on fluency and comprehension. In contrast, top-down training positively affected fluency but had no impact on comprehension. Further, the results do suggest that fast-paced reading may potentially lead to improved comprehension. These findings have implications for the type of language instruction used in classrooms and, therefore, for teachers of adult ESL learners.

    Celem artykułu jest ustalenie potencjalnych kierunków rozwoju planowania przestrzennego na poziomie obszaru metropolitalnego w Polsce na podstawie konfrontacji zamierzeń legislacyjnych administracji rządowej z doświadczeniami praktycznymi i oczekiwaniami środowiska samorządowego. Na tle przedstawionych problemów wynikających z dotychczasowej regulacji ustawowej analizowane są proponowane aktualnie przez rząd zmiany w zakresie systemu planowania strategicznego i przestrzennego (perspektywa top-down). Badania dotyczące perspektywy bottom-up bazują na wywiadach bezpośrednich i analizie dokumentów planistycznych w gminach obszaru metropolitalnego Poznania, będącego przykładem miękkiej przestrzeni planowania. W podsumowaniu krytycznej analizie poddana została spójność systemowa rysującego się nowego modelu planowania metropolitalnego w Polsce.
    The aim of the paper is to determine the possible future of metropolitan spatial planning in Poland basing on the confrontation of legislative intentions of central government administration with practical experience and expectations of the local governments. Against the background of the problems arising from the existing statutory regulation, the changes currently proposed by the government in the strategic and spatial planning system (top-down perspective) are being analyzed. The research on the bottom-up perspective is based on direct interviews and analysis of planning documents in the municipalities of the Poznań metropolitan area as a “soft space of planning”. In the summary, the systemic coherence of the emerging new metropolitan planning model in Poland is put under scrutiny.

    W artykule przedstawiono sytuację cudzoziemców w Poznaniu wraz ze wskazaniem na główne potrzeby i bariery na jakie napotykają. Następnie zaprezentowano dwa typy inicjatyw oddolnych mających wpłynąć na pozytywną zmianę tej sytuacji. Są to działania „na rzecz migrantów” prowadzone w trakcie realizacji projektu AMIGA oraz działania podjęte przez samych cudzoziemców w ramach założonych przez nich grup na portalu społecznościowym Facebook.
    The text presents a situation of foreigners in Poznań taking into consideration the main needs and obstacles that they meet. Then it shows two types of grassroots initiatives that are to have an influence on a positive change of the situation. These are the activities “for the migrants” conducted during the realization of the AMIGA project and activities undertaken by the migrants themselves as part of the groups set up on the social network Facebook.

    Realizacja badań podjętych w ramach niniejszej pracy ma służyć celowi nadrzędnemu, jakim jest rozpoznanie potencjału inicjatywy lokalnej w kontekście aktywizacji społeczności lokalnych Łodzi. Główną metodą badawczą było studium przypadku oparte zarówno na analizie danych ilościowych dotyczących realizacji zadań w ramach inicjatyw lokalnych podejmowanych w Łodzi w latach 2013–2019, jak i analizie danych jakościowych (analizie treści) poszczególnych projektów, które zostały w tym czasie zrealizowane. Analiza ta umożliwia po pierwsze określenie skali wykorzystania wymienionego narzędzia w procesie współkształtowania przestrzeni miejskich przez społeczności lokalne, a po drugie, wskazanie podstawowych rodzajów działań podejmowanych przez mieszkańców, co pozwala na identyfikację ich podstawowych potrzeb i problemów, a przede wszystkim propozycji na ich zapewnienie lub rozwiązanie.
    Presentation of the research results undertaken within the framework of this study is to serve the primary aim which is to identify the potential of local initiative instrument in the context of enhancing citizens’ involvement in solving local problems. The main research method was a case study method based both on the analysis of quantitative data concerning projects implemented as a part of local initiative instrument in Łódź in 2013–2019, and additionally, on the analysis of qualitative data (content analysis) of individual projects that were carried out in this period. This analysis provides the possibility to determine the scale of the use of this tool in the process of co-creating urban spaces by local communities and, moreover, to indicate the basic types of activities undertaken by residents which allows to identify their basic needs and problems and, above all, proposals on how to ensure or solve them.
