Opis:
The essay is excerpted from a chapter of a book that is currently being written by the author. The working title of the book is Spacery po kościołach rzymskich [Walks through historical churches and temples of Rome] (Wydawnictwo Zeszytów Literackich). The present essay aims at discussing the specific character of the Christian church architecture of the city of Rome that constitutes nodes of a network that has been developing throughout one and a half millennia. Each of the chapters of the book is centered around a particular walk of the town that includes on its way the described churches. The walks cover virtually the whole of the old town and some of the adjacent palaces. The adopted method of presentation is purely personal and has a character of a “Roman diary” — to some extent, the author has been inspired by Promenades das Rome by Stendhal. The diary is, however, a particular guide book on the town for those who want to experience something else that the offer presented by standard guidebooks. Notwithstanding it subjective angle, the book does not interfere in passing the essential historical and artistic knowledge to the reader. Rome appears here to be a singular place, as a personification of one of the most important stages of Western civilization.

Opis:
The Order of Reformed Franciscans, a conservative and strict branch of Franciscans, flourished in Poland mainly on the territory of Wielkopolska and Małopolska. The convent in Chocz was chronologically the third foundation in the Wielkopolska custody. Its founder was bishop Andrzej Lipski, who in order to strengthen Catholicism not only brought the Reformed Franciscans to the place but also built a collegiate church, thereby creating a complex of religious institutions in one part of the  town.In the years 1636-1639 there was a conflict between the Reformed Franciscans and the Bernardines. As a result the former were made to leave Chocz for a time. Upon return they began the construction of a new, brick church and convent (1699-1725 r.) It is worth noting that among others, Brother Mateusz Osiecki participated in the realization of the convent buildings. The church was erected in the recessed variant of the wall-pillar system and shows affinity to the Reformed Franciscan Church in Kalisz. Moreover, it is an important example of the sacral buildings of the Wielkopolska province of Reformed Franciscans. The convent was secularized in 1864 by decree of emperor Alexander II. The monks regained their right of ownership only in 1920. First, the convent buildings were used by the Order of Sisters the Shepherdesses of Divine Providence, and only later again by the Franciscans. At present the whole complex is under major restoration works.

Opis:
The article describes one of the elements of the gothic church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Ostrów Tumski in Poznań - its western gable. It is a crow-stepped construction with twelve pinnacles with floriated terminations and a younger ave-bell.The present forms ceramic pinnacles and fleurons come from the extensive redecoration that the church underwent in mid-19th century, as testified by the dates carved on their underside (1859- illustration 3) and the surviving bills. From older iconography (F.B. Werner 1734; J. Minutoli 1833; K.W. Kielisiński - the 1840s) it is evident that the church also in earlier times had pinnacles, probably gothic ones.It is assumed that the construction of the church was begun by builders from West Pomerania ca. 1430 r., and the edifice was completed by the local stonemasons. From written sources it follows that the gable of the church was erected in 1445 by Lorko of Kościan. It can be supposed that the gothic pinnacles were executed by the local Greater Poland craftsmen.

Opis:
The author presents the circumstances of the rise and development of the conception that below the oldest cathedral church in Poznań is the site of a temporary or permanent baptistery as allegedly evidenced by a round limestone bowl. Attention is drawn to the fact that so far this conception has not been supported by analysis of the source material or a detailed study of the remains of the bowl itself or the architectural remains of the purported baptistery. The author makes a reassessment of hitherto claims and shows that the state of the source material does not allow us to uphold the hypothesis of the baptismal function of the limestone bowl from Poznań. The only hypothesis competitive to the baptismal one refers to 60 analogous objects, a majority of which are beyond doubt the remains of mechanical mortar mixers. The article shows that these examples can be treated as fully justified analogies to the bowl from Poznań.The text reviews the arguments of both sides of the dispute: the baptismal and “construction” claims. Weaknesses of the argument for the baptismal interpretation are exposed. Doubts raised by skeptics concerning the interpretation of the bowl as a mortar mixer are dispelled on the basis of analysis of analogous objects. The author concludes that the interpretation of the bowl as a mortar mixer is supported by numerous analogies whereas the baptismal conception lacks such support.

The Evangelicals of Bralin had to wait very long for their own place of prayer - until mid 19th century. Initially they could use a schoolroom and later a room in the town hall. It was only in the years 1866-1867 that a church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, which today, was built in the market square. It was erected as a brick structure, unplastered (Rohbau), in the so-called arcaded style (Rundbogenstil) according to a unique government design created by Berlin architects with the participation of Friedrich August Stiiler. The polychromy of the interior, which has survived till the present day, comes from 1917 and commemorates the jubilee of the church's 50th anniversary as well as the solemnly celebrated 400th anniversary of the Reformation. Pastor Zenon Bessert was the last permanent administrator of the Evangelical parish in Bralin, after 1920 it passed in the care of ministers from Kępno. The church is an exceptional example of well preserved Evangelical buildings that deserves to be placed under the special care of the conservator of historical architecture.

Opis:
The article sums up the reflections on the relics of medieval plaster and layers of paint on the walls, columns and pillars of the Norbertine nuns convent in Strzelno completed around the 2nd-3rd quarter of the 13th century. The relics of the polychromies observed by numerous enthusiasts of the Romanesque Strzelno and discovered during archaeological excavations were topped with the results of conservation-restoration works which uncovered the first figural polychromies in the chancel’s apse. Following verification of the dating of the colours of the church’s interior, an indication was made that in the 13th century, the colour red prevailed; in the 15th-16th centuries, the figural scenes of the apse sported many colours while the remaining part of the sacrum was brightened up with three-colour, geometric patterns. To complete the range of colours, floor tiles were added. Examples have been provided of specialist painting analyses. The entire arrangement has been compared with selected colourful medieval structures. References have been made to the symbolism of the colours used in the Middle Ages and thecontemporary, erroneous perception of Romanesque architecture as rustic, devoid of plaster and colours.
