The main purpose of this article is to provide some information about missionary work of Polish Jesuits in Greece and in Constantinople from XVI to XX century. It was the period of Turkokratia and later of Independent Greece. Article is divided into four small chapters. After a general introduction to the topic, the first chapter “Constantinople” is giving us some information about 18 Jesuits, who worked in Constantinople from XVI until XIX century. Second chapter presented Polish Jesuits who worked on Islands of Aegean Sea: Syros, Tinos, Chios in the XIX century, especially Fathers: Tadeusz Kuczyński, Dominik Osmołowski and Józef Skulina. Third chapter is about Jesuits traveling and working temporarily in Greece in XIX century and in the beginning of XX century, especially Fathers: Maksymilian Ryłło and Marcin Czermiński. Last chapter presented some Jesuits working in Athens in the XX century. Article finished with bibliography and information about Polonica in the Jesuit Archive in Athens. It is not very deep research but rather a kind of signal showing new topics for historic, scientific work.

We are trying in the following phenomenological approach to go on with our description concerning the grotesque in Romanian literature. In the first part of our work, we will make a short and diachronic review of the most important writings belonging to Romanian authors from the XIX-th century till the first decade of the XX-th century. It is then when a mysterious and shy Romanian writer, called URMUZ, gave birth to a few but influential literary pages of the absurd and the grotesque. In the second part of our work we will analyze the distinguishing traits of his ten works of prose through the mirror of the grotesque. This ignored Romanian writer was baptized “a new Alfred Jarry”, although he never had heard about this French author and never read about Ubu. The hidden influence of Urmuz unknowingly modernized the concept of literarity.

The purpose of this article is to show the reception of the educational views of John Ruskin (1819–1900) presented in Polish scientific literature at the turn of the XIX and XX century. John Ruskin was an great English writer, poet, painter and critic of art and social reality. Ruskin’s oeuvre, contained in numerous writings, is the result of admiration for the world, reflection on landscapes, art and timeless values: truth, goodness and beauty; he’s works are characterized by individualism, momentum, normativity, and literary style full digression. For Ruskin, there is no clear definition of education and the educational system. Educational process itself is described in general terms. Ruskin’s beliefs about art and society are connected with the issue of children’s raising. The article contains numerous quotes – from the publications of Polish authors, translations and original Ruskin’s works – enriching the exemplification of the problem outlined in the subject of this article. Ruskin’s thoughts can be found in the foundations of progressive pedagogy and active pedagogy. For this reason, it is worth to consider the issue of the reception of educational views of Ruskin presented in Poland in years 1897–1936.

The beginning of 20th century was a very complicated period in the history of the Ukrainian territories. Konstantin Paustovsky spent his youth in the southern part of the Russian Empire and could observe all the historical processes happening to his country. In his autobiography Story of a life Paustovsky presents a very interesting view of Ukraine at the beginning of the 20th century and during the Russian Civil War. The author of this article analyzes Paustovsky’s perception of Ukraine and tries to give an answer to the question of how a descendant of Zaporozhian Cossacks and Polish intellectuals could become a Russian patriot.

Zapiski z nocnych dyżurów Jacka Baczaka to rzecz o nieobecnym w kulturze, przemilczanym hospicyjnym świecie będącym przestrzenią spotęgowanej obcości. Baczak podejmuje próbę jego opisania, wysłowienia nagromadzonego tam cierpienia, powolnego odchodzenia i śmierci. Jego opis nie może odwoływać się do gotowych matryc, schematów czy wypróbowanych i oswojonych języków. Opis powstaje więc z elementów najprostszych, najbardziej przezroczystych, ascetycznych. Staje się dzięki temu dojmująco wiarygodny, służebny. Zachowując dalece idącą powściągliwość wobec spraw ostatecznych, boleśnie dotyka.
Zapiski z nocnych dyżurów by Jacek Baczak is devoted to the world of hospices, which is generally absent from the world of multiplied presence. Baczak tries to describe it, to express the suffering of this place through words, slowly passing away, and death. His description cannot refer to ready-made matrices, schemes or tested and familiar languages. His description is thus constructed from the simples, the most translucent, ascetic elements. Thanks to this, it becomes poignantly genuine and serving. While restrained in the face of death, it is also moving.

Jerzy Grotowski (1933–1999), considered to be one of the greatest theatre artists of the 20th century, frequently expressed his ambivalent relation to words, repeating that any true knowledge has to be obtained by practice. However, all his life he had been creating and publishing text. The volume collecting them all in print has 1131 pages. Researchers interpreting his art (e.g. Krzysztof Rutkowski, Zbigniew Osiński) and his close collaborators like Ludwik Flaszen many times underlined the importance of Grotowski’s writings, stressing a special function the literature played in the artist’s research. Following their recognitions, partly polemizing with them, one can formulate some basic assumptions concerning the character and functions of Grotowski’s writing and its relation to the main aspects of contemporary literature. This was the man of theatre appears to be also an aware creator of a literature paradoxically close related and working for a mystery beyond the words.

This paper discusses a project to develop a lexico-derivational model of 20th-century Polish vocabulary. On the one hand, this model should be constructed in accordance with the Polish tradition of great lexico-derivational models such as Satkiewicz 1969, Smółkowa 1976, Jadacka 2001 and Waszakowa 2005. On the other hand, it should take into consideration new empirical material gained from the application of linguochronoligization theory (TLCH). A crucial part in the construction of the new model is played by lexical material from the first half of the 20th century, which by the end of the first decade of the 21st century was available only in very limited quantity, most of it coming from systematic, long-term extraction research carried out by Jan Wawrzyńczyk. Therefore this article describes the milestones which have led to the present state, in which it is possible to formulate a plan for the development of such a model. Moreover, the limitations and shortcomings of previous lexico-derivational models are discussed. As a result, a list of 37 questions which could be answered by the emerging model of Polish vocabulary is given. Also, selected graphs are presented to illustrate the diachronic dynamics of Polish vocabulary in the first half of the 20th century.

Artykuł przedstawia w dużym skrócie historię rozumienia pojęcia ‘autotematyzm’, zaproponowanego w połowie ubiegłego wieku przez Artura Sandauera i znacząco ewoluującego w refleksji badawczej w następnych dziesięcioleciach. Problemy definicyjne z autotematyzmem związane były zarówno z jego płynnością terminologiczną, jak i zakresem występowania tego zjawiska, uzależnionego od wpływu zmieniającej się literatury oraz języków jej opisu. Autorka proponuje ujmować rozwój autotematyzmu jako konsekwencję zwrotu lingwistycznego, sytuując go w centrum modernizmu, którego dominanty uwyraźnia, stając się operatywnym narzędziem interpretacji nowoczesności. Jednocześnie zwraca uwagę na wątek uprzywilejowujący podmiotowość w myśleniu o autotematyzmie oraz ścisłe jego powiązanie z autobiografizmem, widoczne w szczególny sposób po przełomie poststrukturalistycznym.
The article presents a short history of the development of the concept of autotematyzm, a term proposed in the mid twentieth century by Artur Sandauer, referring to a kind of self-referentiality, that evolved considerably in scholarly thought in subsequent decades.  Problems in defining the term relate to both its terminological fluidity and the scope of its use, dependent on the influence of literature as it changed and the languages used to describe and analyze it.  The author proposes to formulate the development of the term as a result of the linguistic turn and thus situates it at the center of modernism, whose dominants it expresses, becoming an operative tool for the interpretation of modernity. At the same time, she directs readers’ attention to the current that privileges subjectivity in the reflection on self-referentiality, and its close connection with autobiography, particularly visible after the post-structuralist rupture.

Games of landowning children in the in the second half of XIXth and at the beginning of XXth century in the light of the memories. The aim of this article is to show the playground of children from landowning families during the second half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century. An attempt was made to present the playgrounds of wealthy children, their characteristics, space, and also to determine the place and role of play in the lives of children of landowners. The types of games for children, both boys and girls have been presented. Also children’s toys were made the subject of research. The conclusions presented have been based entirely on the analyses of diaries, memoirs and biographies of the representatives of landowning class.

Artykuł jest próbą omówienia – szerokiego, kontekstowego i interpretacyjnie otwartego na działania edukacyjne – książki Piotra Szaroty pt. Wiedeń 1913. Autorka proponuje koncept lekturowy oparty na kategorii „przed”, dekonstruujący pojęcie „dawnych, dobrych czasów”, kwestionujący topos „ubi sunt”. Innymi słowy: przekonanie, iż Szarota krytycznie czyta wiedeńską czasoprzestrzeń roku poprzedzającego wybuch I wojny światowej, skłania autorkę omówienia do zarówno empatycznej, jak krytycznej lektury książki Wiedeń 1913.
The article is a wide, contextual and open attempt on the educational actions at a review of the book Wiedeń 1913 written by Piotr Szarota. The author proposes lecture based on the category of “before”, this concept deconstructs the idea of “good old times”, it questions the “ubi sunt” theme. In other words: the conviction that Szarota creates critical vision of Vienna’s spacetime of the year before the World War I leads author of the review to emphatic as well as critical lecture of the book Wiedeń 1913.

Archaeological interests of the Szembek earls from Siemianice near Kępno (southern Wielkopolska) have spread over many generations starting from the middle of the 19th century until the present time. This is well exemplified by activities of Jadwiga (1883-1939) and Zofia (1884-1974) Szembek. In the years 1897-1908, both sisters undertook systematic and model excavations of the multicultural cemetery (-ies) at Siemianice near Kępno (Bronze Age 11, Bronze Age V - HaD; the Late La Téne - Early Roman Iron Age) and cemetery at Lipie near Kępno (Bronze Age V). Jadwiga Szembek excavated also multicultural settlement at Tarnowica near Jaworów (western Ukraine) in 1924 and 1927. An origin and development of archaeological interests of the Szembek sisters, along with a detailed analysis of their field works, was reconstructed on the basis of unpublished archive materials and old literature of the subject. Assessment of their achievements in this field, according to both previous and current criteria, made possible to support opinion by Prof. Józef Kostrzewski who rated the Szembek sisters among archaeologists of the most outstanding merit before 1918.
