    The culture of encounter is among favourite themes of Pope Francis’s teaching. Nowadays, in the face of ever increasing feeling of ‘spiritual orphanage’, manifested by the disappearance of closeness and tenderness, he calls for Christians to go out and meet with people. At the same time, he points to Mary as the promoter of the culture of encounter. This very article is devoted to Her. I follow in the Pope’s footsteps, who distinguishes three elements of a meeting in the Gospel scene of Mary’s visit to Elisabeth: ‘Mary goes, Mary encounters, Mary rejoices’. These elements define the fundamental structure of the reflections presented here. This is about showing that Mary inspires us to go out to others, to show them closeness and tenderness, which restore the true joy of life.
    Kultura spotkania należy do ulubionych tematów nauczania papieża Franciszka. W obliczu narastającego współcześnie poczucia „duchowego sieroctwa”, które przejawia się w zanikaniu doświadczenia bliskości i czułości, nawołuje on chrześcijan do wychodzenia i spotykania się z ludźmi. Wskazuje jednocześnie na Maryję jako promotorkę kultury spotkania. Właśnie Jej poświęcony jest artykuł. Podążam w nim za papieżem, który w ewangelicznej scenie nawiedzenia Elżbiety przez Maryję wyróżnia trzy elementy spotkania: „Maryja idzie, Maryja spotyka, Maryja się raduje”. Wyznaczają one zasadniczą strukturę przedkładanych refleksji. Chodzi w nich o ukazanie, że Maryja inspiruje nas w wychodzeniu ku innym, okazywaniu im bliskości i czułości, które przywracają radość życia.

    In the modern world, where humility does not enjoy much esteem, Francis takes up the motif of Mary’s humility. He maintains that She is the most humble among all creation. This is the secret of Her heart. Mary’s beauty and success result not only from the fullness of grace bestowed upon Her by God, but also from the fact that She did not focus on Herself or admire Herself but instead She turned to God and neighbours. The article looks closely at Mary’s humility according to Pope Francis in order to discover the originality of his interpretation. It is composed of three points. The first one addresses the question of why Mary’s humility drew God’s attention. The second point presents basic features and manifestations of Mary’s humility. The third point brings to light a model nature of Mary’s humility, that is in what sense She is a “golden rule” for Christians. At the end of the article conclusions are presented. They point out that Francis’s approach to Mary’s humility is somewhat different from the common approach, because he sees in it not only an attribute of faith, but for him it is a point of departure and the origin of faith. The Pope’s reflections are of theological and pastoral nature, because he is focused on Christian practice. He assumes that our following Mary’s humility willoppose dangerous spiritual worldliness and will considerably contribute to creating ‘new humanism’.

    Praca zbiorowa jest owocem sympozjum, które odbyło się w 2018 w Würzburgu na temat Maryi, Matki jedności. Składa się z osiemnastu artykułów. Pierwszy ukazuje zatroskanie Maryi o jedność jako przejaw Jej duchowego macierzyństwa. Dwa kolejne przedstawiają Matkę jedności w perspektywie Ewangelii Janowej i Łukaszowej. W następnych tekstach dochodzi do głosu na ten sam temat nauka św. Augustyna, św. J. H. Newmana, Leona XIII, Ch. Lubich i Soboru Watykańskiego II. Nie brakuje stanowiska protestanckiego (K. Barth i H. Asmussen) i motywu Matki jedności w rzymskiej liturgii i duchowości szensztackiej. Końcowy artykuł próbuje odczytać maryjne przesłanie niemieckiego poety J. W. Goethego. Wszystkie artykuły dotyczą głównie jedności w perspektywie eklezjalnej i ekumenicznej.
    The collective work is the fruit of a symposium held in 2018 in Würzburg on Mary, Mother of Unity. It consists of eighteen articles. The first shows Mary’s concern for unity as a manifestation of her spiritual motherhood. The next two present the Mother of Unity in the perspective of the Gospels of John and Luke. In the following texts, the teachings of St. Augustine, St. J.H. Newman, Leo XIII, Ch. Lubich, and the Second Vatican Council are brought to bear on the same theme. There is no lack of Protestant positions (K. Barth and H. Asmussen) and the motif of the Mother of Unity in the Roman liturgy and Schoenstatt spirituality. The final article attempts to read the Marian message of the German poet J.W. Goethe. All articles deal mainly with unity in an ecclesial and ecumenical perspective.

         The article addresses two main questions: What image of Mary’s faith does the encyclical Lumen fidei portray? What fruits does the encounter of Mary’s faith and the faith of the Church bring out? The subtitle suggests one more issue: since the encyclical was written by two Popes, (Benedict XVI and Francis), it is interesting to try to determine who wrote particular themes on the topic of Mary's faith. The first chapter presents Mary, the Daughter of Zion, who fulfilled the faith of Israel, and also initiated the faith of the Church. The second chapter characterizes the relation of Mary to the Word of God, which she listened to, kept in her heart and unconditionally accepted in order to live in total harmony with God. The third chapter concerns Mary's journey of faith at Jesus’s side, which was marked with the joy of the Annunciation, as well as with the Cross, finally reaching its destination in the light of his resurrection. The last chapter focuses on the reference of Mary's faith to the faith of the Church. In Mary's school, we learn to trust God and his word, to focus on Jesus, to contemplate him, to follow him, to perceive with his eyes, to cherish his feelings, and to adopt his attitudes. Only such faith brings fruits and joy. The encyclical teaching on Mary’s faith, as read in the context of other statements from both Popes, enables us to establish the following: 1. From Benedict XVI comes the Lumen fidei teaching on Mary, the Daughter of Zion, a woman who accepts and lives by the Word of God; the emphasis on Mary as a model of faith; and the motto “those who believe are never alone”. 2. Francis can be credited with the themes concerning the impact of Mary’s faith on our lives, both personal and social; learning from her how to see with the eyes of Jesus; and entrusting ourselves to his love. He calls her the Mother of our faith to emphasize  her maternal care over the faith of the Church.

    Lud chrześcijański przyznał Maryi tytuł „Uzdrowienie chorych”. Pozdrawia i wzywa Ją nim w liturgii (mszał maryjny) i pozaliturgicznych aktach kultu (Litania loretańska), by za Jej przyczyną wyprosić łaskę zdrowia dla siebie bądź bliskich. Rodzą się zatem pytania: dlaczego Maryję nazywamy Uzdrowieniem chorych? Jaki sens teologiczny kryje ten tytuł? Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą udzielenia pogłębionej i integralnej na nie odpowiedzi. Jest to o tyle istotne, że w przeszłości tytuł ten był czasami rozumiany zbyt jednostronnie i pragmatycznie. Należy mu przywrócić mesjański wymiar. Przedłożony artykuł czyni to w dwóch punktach. Pierwszy wskazuje, że nic bardziej wzniosłego nie można powiedzieć o Maryi aniżeli to, że jest Matką Chrystusa, prawdziwego Lekarza ciał i dusz ludzkich, który nie uwolnił ludzkości od choroby i cierpienia, ale wziął je na siebie i nadał im zbawcze znaczenie. Matka włączona w tajemnicę cierpienia Syna wniosła macierzyński wkład w dzieło powszechnego zbawienia, uzdrawiania człowieka. Przez Jej macierzyństwo Bóg okazał nam swoje współczucie. Drugi punkt ukazuje zaś Maryję jako Matkę chorych i cierpiących, która potrafi ich zrozumieć, bo sama wycierpiała niewyobrażalny ból u boku Jezusa. Godne są naśladowania Jej wiara, nadzieja i miłość w przeżywaniu cierpienia, ponieważ nadają mu one zbawcze znaczenie. Od Maryi uczmy się też wrażliwości, współczucia i wyobraźni w niesieniu chorym konkretnej pomocy. Matka wyprasza im zdrowie duszy i ciała macierzyńskim wstawiennictwem u Chrystusa, który jako jedyny ma moc uzdrawiania otwartych ran i przywracania pokoju złamanym sercom. Nie może Ona wypełniać swej uzdrowicielskiej misji, jeśli Jej duchowe dzieci z ufnością i wytrwale o to nie proszą. Należy Jej zawierzać się „w procesie leczenia ran duszy i ciała”. Okazuje się, że pierwszorzędnie tytuł „Uzdrowienie chorych” przysługuje Jezusowi Chrystusowi, do Maryi zaś odnosi się wtórnie. Ponadto jego sensu teologicznego nie można zawężać do sfery życia cielesnego ani roli Maryi ograniczać do macierzyńskiego pośrednictwa. 
    Christians granted Mary the title “Health of the Sick”. They greet Her and call on Her in the liturgy (Marian missal) and in the other non-liturgical acts of cult (the Litany of Loreto), in order to receive, through Her intercession, the grace of health for themselves or their relatives. Thus some questions arise: why do we refer to Mary as Health of the Sick? What theological significance is behind this title? The present article attempts to address these issues in a detailed and integral way. This is essential since, in the past, this title was understood in a one-sided or too pragmatic way. Its Messianic dimension should be restored. This article does this in two points. The first point indicates that one cannot say anything more profound about Mary than that She is the Mother of Christ, a true Healer of human bodies and souls; who did not free humanity from disease or suffering, but He took them on Himself and granted them salvific significance. The Mother involved in the mystery of the Son’s suffering made Her motherly contribution to the work of common salvation and the healing of all mankind. Through Her motherhood God showed us His compassion. The other point presents Mary as a Mother of the sick and suffering, who can understand them, because She Herself suffered inconceivable pain at the side of Jesus. It is worthy to imitate Her faith, hope and love in enduring suffering, because they impart salvific significance to it. From Mary, we learn sensitivity, compassion and creativity when bringing concrete help to the sick. The Mother begs for their healthy souls and bodies through Her intercession with Christ, who is the only one able to heal open wounds and restore peace to broken hearts. She cannot fulfill Her healing mission if Her spiritual children do not trustfully and relentlessly ask for it. It is necessary to entrust to Her “in the process of healing the wounds of one’s soul and body”. Thus it turns out that primarily Jesus Christ deserves the title “Health of the sick”— Mary plays a secondary role. Furthermore, the theological sense of the title cannot be narrowed to the bodily aspect of life nor can it limit Mary only to the motherly role.

    The German title of the book Mariahilf shows that it concerns Mary, in whom Catholics see their Lady of Assistance. Her motherly care and tenderness accompany them in daily lives, especially in times of trials and adversities. In the times of Counter-Reformation the title Auxilium christianorum (Help of Christians) became widespread. The authors of this monograph, as the subtitle clarifies, put it thru historical, theological and cultic analysis. This is not only about the interpretation of its theological significance and cultic application, but also about the discovery of the contexts and planes which helped to propagate it in the German-speaking regions, especially in Austria and Bavaria. In order to achieve this goal the authors of the individual chapters present the way in which this Marian title has become apparent in recent centuries in liturgical piety (the texts of the Mass, antiphons, hymns) as well as popular piety (religious songs, prayers, sermons, shrines). This is to find the answer to what extent the motif of Mary-Lady of Assistance could be present in modern theology and the life of the Church in order to contribute to their revival.

    Książka jest zbiorem sześciu studiów na temat teologicznego obrazu Maryi w świetle patrystycznej i scholastycznej wykładni Pisma Świętego. Przedwczesna śmierć autorki nie pozwoliła jej uczynić z nich spójnej całości. Jej współpracownicy, po naniesieniu drobnych poprawek redakcyjnych, postanowili przygotowany przez nią maszynopis opublikować (bez wstępu i zakończenia). Regina Willi wybrała z Biblii kilka perykop i motywów maryjnych (np. Mulier fortis, Mater Ecclesiae, Mater unitatis, Sedes sapientiae). Na ich przykładzie ukazuje jak Ojcowie Kościoła i pisarze średniowieczni je analizowali i interpretowali, aby odkryć ich sens alegoryczny. Pragnęli w ten sposób pogłębić rozumienie tajemnicy Maryi. 
    The book is a collection of six dissertations on the subject of theological image of Mary from patristic and scholastic perspective of the Scripture. Premature death of the author did not allow for the publication to form a coherent whole. Her coworkers, having introduced some minor editorial corrections, decided to publish her typescript (without an introduction or a conclusion). Regina Willi chose a few pericopes and Marian motifs from the Scripture (e.g. Mulier fortis, Mater Ecclesiae, Mater unitatis, Sedes sapientiae). Basing on these examples she shows how the Fathers of the Church and medieval writers analyzed and interpreted them in order to discover their allegorical meaning. They desired to deepen their understanding of the mystery of Mary.

    Książka składa się z ośmiu referatów, które zostały wygłoszone na konferencji naukowej poświęconej podsumowaniu i ocenie posoborowej mariologii w krajach języka niemieckiego. Pierwsza jej część, bardziej historyczna, prezentuje genezę, dzieje i główne osiągnięcia trzech ośrodków, które kształtują współczesne oblicze niemieckojęzycznej mariologii (Niemieckie Towarzystwo Mariologiczne, Międzynarodowe Koło Mariologiczne w Kevelaer, Instytut Marianum w Ratyzbonie). Druga jej część, bardziej teologiczna, obejmuje kwestie merytoryczne. Przybliża specyfikę mariologii Benedykta XVI i wiodących mariologów obszaru języka niemieckiego (np.: H. Menke, A. Ditrich, M. Hoffman, R. Hangler i G. Greshake), a także opisuje aktualną obecność wykładów z mariologii na katolickich fakultetach teologicznych Niemiec, Austrii i Szwajcarii.
    The book comprises eight papers which were presented at the scientific conference devoted to the summary and assessment of the postconciliar Mariology in German speaking countries. The first part, more historical, presents origins, history and the main achievements of the three centers which shape modern German speaking Mariology (German Mariological Associacion, International Mariological Society in Kevelaer, Marian Institute of Regensburg). The other part focuses on theological aspects. It discusses the specificity of Benedict XVI’s Mariology and that of the other leading Mariologists of German speaking areas (e.g. H. Menke, A. Ditrich, M. Hoffman, R. Hangler and G. Greshake), as well as describing the present-day occurrence of Mariological lectures in the Catholic theological faculties of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

    Winfried M. Wermter, niemiecki teolog, który w trakcie pontyfikatu Jana Pawła II przebywał wiele lat w Polsce, charakteryzuje i ocenia polską maryjność doby powojennej. Jego monografia jest przepracowaną i uzupełnioną nowszą literaturą częścią rozprawy doktorskiej, którą napisał w Akademii Teologii Katolickiej w Warszawie pod kierunkiem Lucjana Baltera. Otrzymujemy spojrzenie na naszą pobożność maryjną przez pryzmat ponawianych aż pięciokrotnie aktów poświęcenia Polski, Kościoła i świata Maryi. Wermter przyjmuje, że odgrywały one w niej kluczową rolę i kształtowały jej specyfikę. Decyzją Episkopatu Polski, zwłaszcza kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego, zostały nie tylko wpisane w duszpasterstwo, lecz także stanowiły jego znamię. Z tego względu autor wybiera drogę „od góry”, koncentruje się na pastoralnym programie polskich biskupów. W jego świetle odkrywa teologiczną głębię aktów poświęcenia się Maryi, ich religijny i społeczny kontekst, zwraca też baczną uwagę na zawarte w nich historyczne doświadczenie Polaków. To skondensowane studium, w miarę obiektywne i udokumentowane, jest przeznaczone głównie dla obcokrajowców, którzy zachwyceni lub nastawieni krytycznie, pragną poznać i pojąć fenomen polskiej maryjności w latach 1946-1979.
    Winfried M. Wermter, German theologian who stayed in Poland for many years during the pontificate of John Paul II, characterizes and evaluates the Polish Marianity of the post-war era. His monograph is well written and supplemented by some newer literature, a part of his doctoral dissertation, which he wrote at the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw under the supervision of Lucjan Balter. He looks at our Marian piety through the prism of the acts of consecration of Poland, the Church and the world to Mary, repeated as many as five times. He assumes that they played a key role and shaped its specificity. By the decision of the Polish Episcopate, especiallyCardinal Stefan Wyszyński, these acts were not only inscribed within pastoral care, but became its distinguishing feature. For this reason, our author chooses the ‘top-down’ path, focuses on the pastoral program of Polish bishops. In its light, he discovers the theological depth of the acts of consecration to Mary, their religious and social context, and pays close attention to the historical experience of Poles contained therein. His condensed study, reasonably objective and documented, is intended mainly for foreigners who, delighted or critical, want to learn about and understand the phenomenon of Polish Marianity in the years: 1946-1979.
