Opis:
It seems that one of the reasons why the term “the light of Faith” occurs rarely in modern Church teaching is that today we do not distinguish clearly enough faith from convictions and worldview. In terms of St. Thomas Aquinas the concept of “the light of Faith” is something more than an accidental metaphor. It occupies a precise position in a series of three hierarchical metaphors that represent three radically different situations of our access to the truth. The article explains what in the texts of Aquinas is the light of reason, the light of Faith and the light of glory.

Pope Francis in his encyclical reminded us that Lumen fidei contains abundant material truth about the need of the development of a comprehensive religious awareness based on man’s inborn senses. Simultaneously he pointed at their grounding and fulfillment in a person’s practical choices, particularly those pertaining to confidence in and faithfulness to God. Here actual exercise of the attributes of listening and seeing opens the prospect of the perception of something more besides the materially discernible object. This creates the possibility of bringing closer to view the supernatural reality, and at the same time frees a person from a unilateral attachment to transient values. Finally, the gift of listening and seeing performs the only and unique function of actively enriching the inner life of the individual human with the presence and action of God.

In Czesław Miłosz’s poetry, light takes a special place. In my work, I have made an attempt to determine its role in the interwar poetry of the memberof the Żagary literary group, in which light takes various shapes which are often contrary to one another. One can look at them in search of not only a variability of artistic forms, but also for testimonies of the era and declarations of contemporary poetic worldview of the author of Three Winters (Trzy zimy). The clash with various interpretations of the word ‘catastrophism’ shows that light in Miłosz’s poetry leads far beyond the course of history.

Opis:
The presented text contains an introduction, translation and commentary on the stages of the manifestation of the deity and the pleromatic emanation presented in the Ocarot chajim (Treasures of Life) treatise by rabbi Chajim Vital, a disciple of Isaac Luria. This work is the most systematic display of Lurianic metaphysics. In the introduction, the author situates the position of the treaty in the broader context of Lurianic literature. Then he discusses the diff erences and similarities between the ancient Hebrew concept of prophetic spirit transmission, and the Gnostic, Platonic and Neoplatonic understanding of the process of emanation. The translated source text and commentary analyze the act of self-contraction of infi nity and the emergence of a plerome as given in the form of a dialectical game of linear and circular sefi rots until the final emergence of megaanthropos – Adam Qadmon.

Opis:
The aim of this article was to present a comparative interpretation of the selected poems by Tymoteusz Karpowicz (the poem alfaŚWIATŁOWSTĄPIENIE and a few accompanying poems) and Ezra Pound (The Cantos: LXXX, LXXXI and LXXXIII). The texts have been selected because of the theme of light, sun and visual perception. The comparative method is supposed to show 20th-century Polish poetry in the context of Anglo-American modernism. The relationship between the two poets seems to be hypothetical and one-sided. It has not been established so far whether the writings of Karpowicz were inspired by Pound’s texts. Thus, the article realized a model of contactless, comparative literary study, where comparisons are made on the basis of a typologic relationship. The first part of the article presented the theme of light in some non-poetic texts by Karpowicz and Pound and in their conception of art. The next two parts focus on the interpretation of poetry. The last chapter contained the conclusions drawn from the comparative analysis of chosen texts. The motif of light became not only a link between the selected poems, but also a reason for the comparison of the poetical techniques, specificity of style and the functions of linguistic experiments. The philosophical, Biblical, literary and even scientific contexts were evoked. A theoretical background was represented by the notion of reading/interpretation by Wolfgang Iser, transtextuality by Gérard Genette and the category of a model reader by Umberto Eco. The literary projects of Karpowicz and Pound impel readers to consider several issues. The most significant are: the limits of interpretation, obscurity or inexplicability of modern poetry and the problems of literary communication.

Opis:
The metaphor of dark night has been deeply rooted by John Henry Newman in the Bible, as evidenced in his sermons. In addition, it results from the inspiration of works of the Fathers of the Church, including St. Gregory of Nazianzus, whose poetry he valued, as well as it was taken over from Anglican theologians, Lancelot Andrewes, Bishop Winchester and Thomas Sherlock, Bishop of London. Apparently, this metaphor resounded in The Pillar of the Cloud, and other works confi rm the interpretation that the dark night depicts whole life of man as a pilgrim. Faith helps him to lean on God who leads him home. Certain similarities with this metaphor also occur in the poetry of Luis Rosales, a 20th-century Spanish poet. The dark night is also the season that fell after original sin, making the world unfriendly to man; henceforth he is subject to ignorance, sin and death. However, a believer can see some positive signs that night, which indicate the truth that the world is moving to the end of its path.

Opis:
Father Paweł Fłorenski represents an integral worldview based on the Christian and Greek paradigmatic cultural pattern. He was convinced that the knowledge contained in intellectus fidei leads to certain knowledge, although it cannot be complete knowledge. In his opinion, it is possible to get to know the whole through its parts, albeit imperfectly. The basic assumption of Fłorenski’s concept is the statement: one should philosophize only in the religion, penetrating its interior. As a theologian and philosopher, he faced the incomprehensible Mystery and has given it credibility just as a mystery. He used his great erudition and mathematical and technical education. The article is an attempt to present Paweł Fłorenski’s reasoning, describe his rational reasons for the religious truth, that man in his here and now, with the strength of his spirit, has access to the Heaven, in which he fully experiences own immortality. We showed how the Russian theologian, in his courageous thinking, according to the whole, combined data from various areas, i.e., Dante’s poetic vision with the mathematical formalism of Einstein’s theory, to justify the truth of the Christian faith about the human immortality.

Opis:
The article deals with 18th century Enlightenment and its clearly anti-Christian character. However, it is impossible to understand this period without showing it in the light of Christian enlightenment whose centre is Christ – the Light of the world. On the philosophical-theological plane the most profound synthesis of Christian faith and philosophical logos is to be found in the doctrine of St. Augustine along with its theory of illumination (illuminatio). According to John Paul II, the rejection of Christ in the period of Enlightenment resembles the history of St. Paul, who was rejected on the Athenian Aeropagus when he started speaking about the risen Christ. This rejection was accomplished for the sake of an independent human reason whose complete autonomy was demanded by Kant, whereas in the philosophy of Voltaire the Enlightenment fully showed its derisively-mocking anti-Christian countenance. According to Voltaire faith should be replaced byan enlightened reason and religion by philosophy. In consequence, deism with its idea of God as the Great Clockmaker was to supplant the Christian faith. As Joseph Ratzinger noted, since the Enlightenment we have paradoxically witnessed a deepening trend of irrationalism and scepticism in the Western culture. That is why already as Benedict XVI he postulates the construction of a new rationality, which means “broadening the horizons of rationality” whose ultimate foundation is Christ-the Logos.
