    Marta Kaźmierczak’s book which is titled Przekład w kręgu intertekstualności. Na materiale tłumaczeń poezji Bolesława Leśmiana [“Translation and intertextuality: a study based on the translations of Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry”] is the first comprehensive monograph on Bolesław Leśmian’s poems that have been translated into English and Russian. The aim of the study is to examine how the “intertextual signals” from the source texts were translated into languages that are cognate with and distantly related to Polish. The author understands intertextuality as a significant relationship between a particular literary text and another text, a group of texts (e.g. philosophical), or cultural texts (e.g. a macrotext concerning Slavonic beliefs) that come before a given text in time. The intertextual elements in Leśmian’s poems are classified thematically, i.e. according to the domain to which they refer and based on the extent to which they are recognizable to those who have read the texts that are referred to.

    The text focuses on the definition of substitute family care and its basic forms that are applied and used in the Czech Republic. The historical progression of substitute family care is also mentioned to demonstrate that this issue is a part of human society. An integral part of the text is the statistical information. Furthermore, the purpose of the text is to point out the need for experts and professionals who are engaged with this problem and are working with this targeted group. Last but not least is the need for reflection on those changes that had to be made because of the change in attitudes concerning substitute family care.

    Social disadvantage is a construct that captures various dimensions of social position, such as economic status, educational attainment, as well as ethnicity. There is considerable evidence that social disadvantage is associated with emotional and behavioural problems in children (Bergin & Bergin, 2015). Nowadays, the theme of inclusion is accurate hence the issue of social disadvantages is not topic just for the pedagogy and pedagogical workers. At the same level, the authors focus on social disadvantages children in kindergartens. A challenge for intervention includes that social disadvantage is often structural in nature and, as a result, is largely impervious to change. It has been found that much of the association of low family income with adverse child development is indirect, through more proximal processes such as parental mental health and the home environment, rather than direct. Therefore, it is crucial for pedagogical workers such as teacher, teacher assistants etc., to acknowledge the sensitivity of social disadvantages which a family can face to. This chapter aims to highlights the issue of social disadvantages which can occur in kindergarten, with an emphasis on inclusion. By using the case studies the authors have found out how a status of a social disadvantage child influence a child and its family. Also, how this problematic is seen by pedagogical workers in chosen kindergarten.

    This paper proposes a compositional analysis of the meaning of Japanese daroo-utterances with declarative and interrogative force, and final rising and falling intonation. Daroo is analyzed in a framework for speech act felicity as an operator lowering the quality threshold for felicitous assertion. The conveyed meanings of conjecture, confirmation, and doubt uses of darooutterances are predicted from modification of the respective speech act types’ felicity conditions by daroo.

    The aim of this paper is to analyse non-places and heterotopias in the films “Cześć Tereska!” (Poland, 2001, Robert Gliński) and “Lilja 4-ever” (Sweden, 2002, Lukas Moodysson). Drawing on the theories of French anthropologist Marc Augé and philosopher Michel Foucault, the author demonstrates that the lives of the protagonists revolve around the ghetto-like housing estates of apartment blocks and non-places of hypermodernity. At the same time, despite the surrounding bleakness and fatalism, the heroines manage to find “havens” which perform the functions of heterotopia, in the sense proposed by Michel Foucault. The significance of both places is ambivalent, which is demonstrated in the discussion.

    There is vast evidence that gender influences the legislative behaviour of MPs. Nonetheless, as most of the findings come from Western Europe, one may ask whether such effects take place similarly also in post-communist parliaments. Since the two regions experienced different gender-related history, a negative answer suggests itself. By contrast, this first complex research on the issue conducted in a post-communist country demonstrates the opposite. It employs parliamentary activity of representatives in the Czech Republic between 1993 and 2017 as a research case. Results of the analysis show that although female MPs speak less, they receive more positions in intra-parliamentary bodies than male deputies. Moreover, a majority of committees are far from being gender-neutral as male and female legislators have significantly different chances of becoming their members. Overall, the results suggest that gender influences MPs’ parliamentary behaviour even in post-communist countries, and surprisingly similarly to Western Europe.
    Istnieje wiele dowodów na to, że płeć wpływa na ustawodawcze zachowania posłów. Niemniej jednak, jako że większość ustaleń pochodzi z Europy Zachodniej, można zadać pytanie, czy taka zależność zachodzi również w postkomunistycznych parlamentach. Ponieważ oba regiony miały różną historię związaną z płcią, odpowiedź negatywna sugeruje się sama. Natomiast pierwsze kompleksowe badania nad tym zagadnieniem przeprowadzone w państwie postkomunistycznym pokazują coś przeciwnego. Jako przypadek badawczy wykorzystana została działalność parlamentarna przedstawicieli w Czechach w latach 1993–2017. Wyniki analizy pokazują, że choć posłanki mówią mniej, otrzymują więcej stanowisk w organach wewnątrzparlamentarnych niż posłowie płci męskiej. Ponadto większość komisji jest daleka od neutralności płciowej, ponieważ ustawodawcy płci męskiej i żeńskiej mają znacząco różne szanse na to, by zostać ich członkami. Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, wyniki sugerują, że płeć wpływa na zachowanie parlamentarzystów w państwach postkomunistycznych, zaskakująco podobnie jak w Europie Zachodniej.

    There are some studies on the educational potential of game jams, but their number seems insufficient given the hundreds of thousands of game jam participants every year. What emerges as the largest research gap is the game industry perspective: its involvement in game jamming and motivations for doing so. This study is a reaction to this research gap. Current research defined some educational benefits of game jams, but how these benefits are relevant for the game industry is radically underresearched. Clarifying this missing link might be essential to the widespread use of game jams as platforms for collaboration between the academia and the game industry. This explorative study answers the following questions: What do we know about the learning outcomes of game jams for participants? How are (or are not) those outcomes relevant for the game industry? How and why do (or do not) video game studios engage with game jams? If so, are the studios also motivated by educational benefits? Our paper is based on a systematic review of resources from 10 academic databases using search operators and pre-defined criteria, and also on direct data collection from the video game industry. The study suggests that game jams can improve soft and hard skills that the video game industry appreciates. Also, the findings suggest that the video game industry is aware of game jams’ educational benefits and that these benefits are one of the main motivators for game companies to get involved in game jams.
    Na podstawie przeglądu literatury i danych od 14 producentów gier wideo artykuł omawia edukacyjne walory game jamów pod kątem kariery w branży gier. Jest to obszar słabo zbadany – wśród 362 wstępnie wybranych tekstów z 10 baz naukowych znaleziono 15 odpowiednich do części 1 (z punktu widzenia uczestników) i 12 do części 2 (z punktu widzenia samej branży). Część 3 uzupełnia ten przegląd o dane pozyskane przez autorów z wstępnego badania 14 czeskich firm. Wnioski końcowe potwierdzają, że game jamy mogą rozwijać miękkie i twarde umiejętności cenione przez branżę gier. Można stwierdzić, że nie tylko branża jest świadoma tych walorów edukacyjnych, ale należą one do głównych motywacji, które sprawiają, że firmy angażują się w game jamy. Oprócz korzyści edukacyjnych inne motywatory to korzyści w obszarach rekrutacji, networkingu, PR, firmowej kultury organizacyjnej, a także wartość samego tworzenia gier (jako produktów komercyjnych lub dla portfolio). Game jamy często są też platformą współpracy między branżą a akademią, a ponadto stymulują rozwój lokalnych społeczności branżowych.

    The paper deals with Thomas Hettche’s novel Pfaueninsel, which is interpreted as a story about the Other. The category of otherness refers to the main character, Marie Strakon, a dwarf in the service of the King of Prussia in the 19th century, and to the place of action, Peacock Island near Berlin. Hettche’s historiographical metafiction is a fictional biography of a woman whose physical otherness places her in opposition to the orders established by humans: social, cultural, aesthetic, and historical. Peacock Island, in turn, transformed into an artificial paradise, is a heterotopic sphere of otherness contrasting with Berlin, an urban space of civilisation, progress, and the Industrial Revolution. The story of the Peacock Island biotope illustrates the emergence and evolution of ecological consciousness in the 19th century; it constitutes a motif of non-anthropocentric history being “the Other” of the ‘great’ history of humans. The paper shows how different dimensions of otherness are constructed in relation to the main protagonist and to the island space.
