The article presents various semantic levels of the film of Lech Majewski entitled Angelus (2001). The author concentrates mainly on the history of Upper Silesia in the period between 1930–1950, the history of the occult commune and the painting society, the so-called “Janów Group”, as well as the relation sacred-profane, expressed by the references to the history of the Rosicrucian Order. Another context discussed in the article is the intersemioticism of the film (especially the relations between painting and film). The interpretation of the film takes into account the basic context that is the artistic activity of Lech Majewski.

The intellectual portrait in R. Queneau's "Diaries" is built by the author himself and - to the same extent - by the reader, on the basis of the way in which the records are organized and their contents. Although the autobiographical speaker in the "Diaries" adopts many models of self-presentation (e.g. as an intimist, a traveller, a patriot, a humanitarian), one of them, that of an intellectual, encyclopaedist, erudite, writer and philosopher, pervades all the others; playing with them is one of the methods of presenting oneself as an intellectual, besides direct reference, biography, thematics, and artistic programmes.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present Tadeusz Różewicz as a poetic portraitist. Faces very often appear in the poet’s works and they play a special role there. The methods that are used to construct them can be grouped into four main categories: 1) a face as a performing subject, 2) a face as an object, 3) a face as a static construct, and finally 4) a face as an element, or metonymy, of human existence and entanglement with reality. In Różewicz’s poetry the human face is material and a mirror, but also a universal symbol of the human condition. These faces are usually distorted, decaying, and blurred. They symbolize the disintegration of the world in which human beings have to live. For Różewicz a face is the most condensed image of humanity and an equivalent of a substance in which every external stimulus leaves its mark. The way of using faces as a material and the process of disintegration that is described in detail constitute a dramatic and performative action which implements the objectives of fluid aesthetics, thus showing the moments of transition from meaning to nothingness and the process of erasing meaning.

The article deals with the semantics and usage of the word chinovnic (official). The author views “the behavior” of this noun in the Russian texts of 18th–19th and 20th, 21st c. The investigation is based on the materials of Russian National Corpus (ruscorpora.ru). In the texts of 18th–19th c. the noun is used in a model “noun + proper name”, but in the modern use this model is lost, the noun chinovnic draws closer to the noun bureaucrat (pedant). In the article the main and peripheral senses of the noun chinownis are described: hired labor, disinterested attitude, lack of individuality. Native speakers of modern Russian avoid too negative descriptions contained in the word bureaucrat, which are perceived as too negative and prefer to use ambiguous noun such as chinovnic.

In this article, the author discusses and reviews Andrzej Lam’s book Portrety i spotkania (Pułtusk–Warszawa 2014) which is a collection of studies of German poets from the Middle Ages until the mid-20th century. The author highlights the coherence of the publication consisting of texts written in the past 30 years. Originally, they were allocated different functions, but in Lam’s book they seem homogenous and mutually complementary. Lam’s homogenous position results from the writer’s attitude: very skilfully, he makes use of structuring tools, heading towards a hermeneutic desire to provide an outline of the writers emerging from the texts and connected with them. The author also presents the literary criticism aspect of the book: in the second part, Lam is predominantly a historian of literary criticism and its active participant.

The article makes an attempt to characterize a Polish language teacher who works in a secondary school. The author uses Polish lessons reports which teachers fill out and tries to make generalizations concerning methodological solutions introduced by the teachers.  Opinions of Polish language teachers who implement objectives developed as a part of ‘Tools in Action’ programme were used to analyse such elements of a lesson as: motivation situation, the topic of a lesson or innovations introduced by the teachers to already prepared lesson plans. The teachers’ comments and suggestions which were included in the reports allowed to characterize the image of a Polish language teacher and to describe selected areas of lessons. Due to their realization the perception of an educational thought inscribed within the idea of teaching as extensive humane project is possible during the Polish lessons in secondary schools.

This article synthesises the topic of the views of Nazi war criminals in the Polish post-war prose (1944–1989). The author enumerates the most important pieces of Polish prose treating the motif of German war criminals. This outline is an invitation to describe a portrait of the executioners and it signals several important problems related to the subject, including the question of the genesis of evil and the most important presentations of Nazis in Polish literature. Another significant issue is that of the transformation of the image of Nazis over time during the Communist era in Poland and the related stereotypes of Germans in Polish culture through history. The article also briefly discusses the topic of the executioners in the work of Jonathan Littell and Bogdan Rutha

The paper focuses on the essay “My Stumbling Speech in Kyiv” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt which hitherto has been on the sidelines of Dürrenmatt studies. The literary portrait of a well-known Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko as a cultural “Other” and the self-projection of the essay’s author have been analyzed here in their interrelations with various cultural and political contexts.
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę eseju Friedricha Dürrenmatta Niewygłoszone przemówienie o Kijowie, który jak dotąd pozostaje na marginesie zainteresowań badaczy twórczości szwajcarskiego dramaturga. Portret literacki ukraińskiego poety Tarasa Szewczenki jako kulturowego Innego, a także portret własny autora tekstu zostały przenalizowane w aspekcie ich relacji wobec kontekstów kulturowych i politycznych.

This article aims to answer the question of how the City of Odessa was portrayed in the Michale Boganim's movie Odessa... Odessa! The first part deals withthe phenomenon of the City’s omnipresence in various works of art, along with factorsthat contributed to its prosperity in 19th century. The next part of the article is devotedto the movie’s composition that partially resembles a triptych, collage and musical variation devoted to specific space. Special attention was paid to the original soundtrack, the way of shooting urban landscapes and colors, which combined together contribute to the movies overall nostalgic atmosphere. In the following part, metaphors that underline the passage of time in the movie are enumerated and analyzed. Conclusions concerning Odessians' mental and spiritual exile as well as their vision of imaginary, idealized Odessa, that no longer exists are drawn in the last part.

This article is devoted to the issue of the evolution of how a woman is portrayed in Vladimir Voinovich’s works. In the author’s early works a woman’s portrayal was relatively poor, stereotypical and neutral; then it became more diverse and profound from the point of view of its ideological significance. A woman steps away from the man’s background and transforms herself into his equal partner in the process of creating reality.

Książka Ewy Szkudlarek Portrety cieni Witkacego jest nowatorskim spojrzeniem na twórczość Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza. Autorka przedstawiła wizualne i metaforyczne aspekty cieni, poddając analizie wszystkie dziedziny twórczości artysty, dotąd niedostrzeżone przez innych badaczy. Cień jest tym czynnikiem, który łączy i różnicuje całą twórczość zakopiańskiego artysty. Wieloaspektowość cienia w ujęciu kulturowym, psychologicznym, psychoanalitycznym, egzystencjalnym spaja twórczość Witkacego. Cień pełni funkcję metafory ludzkiej kondycji, jej kruchości i ostateczności.
Ewa Szkudlarek’s book Portrety cieni Witkacego [Witkacy’s shadow portraits] is an innovative look at the work of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. The author discusses the visual and the metaphorical aspects of shadows by analyzing the artist’s oeuvre across different media. This has not been done so far. The shadow connects and differentiates the works of Witkacy. The multi-faceted nature of the shadow in the context of culture, psychology, psychoanalysis, and existentialism unites Witkacy’s work. The shadow acts as a metaphor for the human condition, human vulnerability and mortality.

The article A narrative portrait of Marie Grubbe in Lone Hørslev’s novel Dyrets år (The Year of the Beast) discusses the latest biographical novel on the controversial Danish aristocrat from the 17th century. In order to address the issue in closer detail, a brief biography of Marie Grubbe is given in the article’s introduction which is followed by a presentation of all the Danish works of fiction on the person that have been published so far. The analysis shows that the authors’ approach to their protagonist varies from disgust to fascination, depending on the period that the work originates from. Lone Hørslev’s Dyrets år may not be a genuine masterpiece, but it definitely adds new, contemporary aspects to the overall understanding of Marie Grubbe’s conduct and enriches her portrait with some traits which have not yet been discussed.
