Opis:
In this paper, we study the onset of cellular convection in a horizontal fluid layer heated from below, with a free-slip boundary condition at the bottom when the driving mechanism is surface tension at the upper free surface, in the light of the modified analysis of Banerjee et al. (Jour. Math. & Phys. Sci., 1983, 17, 603). This leads to a formulation of the problem which depends upon whether the liquid layer is relatively hotter or cooler. It is found that the phenomenon of surface tension driven instability problems should not only depend upon the Marangoni number which is proportional to the maintained temperature differences across the layer but also upon another parameter that arises due to variation in the specific heat at constant volume on account of the variations in temperature. Numerical results are obtained for the problem wherein the lower free boundary is perfectly thermally conducting.

Opis:
The aim of this work is to propose an empirical model for predicting shapes of a Taylor bubble, which is a part of slug flows, under different values of the surface tension in stagnant liquids by employing numerical simulations. The k - turbulence model was used in the framework of finite volume method for simulating flow fields in a unit of slug flow and also the pressure distribution on a Taylor bubble surface. Assuming that an air pressure distribution inside the Taylor bubble must be uniform, a grid search method was exploited to find an appropriate shape of a Taylor bubble for six values of surface tension. It was found that the shape of a Taylor bubble would be blunter if the surface tension was increased. This was because the surface tension affected the Froude number, controlling the flow around a Taylor bubble. The simulation results were also compared with the Taylor bubble shape, created by the Dumitrescu-and-Taylor model and former studies in order to ensure that they were consistent. Finally, the empirical model was presented from the simulation results.

Opis:
Finite element and response surface methods were utilized to investigate the stress concentration factor induced in isotropic rectangular plates with two identical countersunk rivet holes due to uniaxial tension. In this investigation, the finite element model was constructed using ANSYS software and used to produce stress concentration factor (SCF) data. Additionally, the response surface method (RSM) was implemented to characterize the influence of the problem geometric parameters on the SCF. Besides, RSM combined with least squares regression methods were employed to formulate a simple and effective equation to mathematically compute the stress concentration factor […] value. This equation was consequently verified with finite element analysis (FEA) results. Lastly, an optimum plate and holes configuration that minimizes the SCF was suggested and hence recommended.
