Opis:
The paper presents a novel description of the interplay between the windup phenomenon and directional change in controls for multivariable systems (including plants with an uneven number of inputs and outputs), usually omitted in the literature. The paper also proposes a new classification of anti-windup compensators with respect to the method of generating the constrained control signal.

Opis:
Nonlinear Trajectory Generation (NT)), developed by Mark Milam, is a software algorithm used to generate trajectories of constrained nonlinear systems in real-time. The goal of this paper is to present an approach to make NTG more userfriendly. To accomplish this, we have programmed a Graphical User Interface (GU)) in Java, using object oriented design, which wraps the NTG software and allows the user to quickly and efficiently alter the parameters of NTG. This new program, called NTGsim, eliminates the need to reprogram the NTG algorithm explicitly each time the user wishes to change a parameter.

A system of differential equations for the control of tumor growth cellsin a cycle non-specific chemotherapy is analyzed. Spontaneously acquired drug resistance is taken into account by means of a mutation rate non-decreasingly dependent on time and the drug kill rate is supposed to depend on the growth rate of sensitive cells. For general tumor growth and drug kill rates the optimal treatment consists in maximizing the allowable drug concentration throughout.

Opis:
A new discrete-time sliding-mode congestion controller for connection-oriented networks is proposed. Packet losses which may occur during the transmission process are explicitly taken into account. Two control laws are presented, each obtained by minimizing a different cost functional. The first one concentrates on the output variable, whereas in the second one the whole state vector is considered. Weighting factors for adjusting the influence of the control signal and appropriate (state or output) errors are incorporated in both the functionals. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is proved, and the conditions for 100% bottleneck node bandwidth utilization are derived. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by computer simulations.

The paper presents a mathematical model of a collision situation for objects afloat based on the rules of a multiple complex motion. It also contains an analysis of the presented model and draws some conclusions from it. The method used to determine the minimum-time control of ships in a situation of colliding with other objects afloat is presented for a mathematical model of a collision situation. It also includes the results of a simulation study conducted by means of this method. A parallel approach of a ship to an encountered object was studied, i.e., a situation generating a critical case which is the collision of two ships.

The problem considered is that of minimizing a quadratic cost functional for a discrete distributed system with fixed initial and final states. It is shown that under suitable controllability assumptions, there is a close relationship between this problem and that of exact controllability with minimization of a time-varying energy criterion. The HUM technique is then extended to treat the exact controllability problem in the time-varying case and applied to provide an explicit form for the optimal control and the optimal cost.

Opis:
We show a turnpike result for problems of optimal control with possibly nonlinear systems as well as pointwise-in-time state and control constraints. The objective functional is of integral type and contains a tracking term which penalizes the distance to a desired steady state. In the optimal control problem, only the initial state is prescribed. We assume that a cheap control condition holds that yields a bound for the optimal value of our optimal control problem in terms of the initial data. We show that the solutions to the optimal control problems on the time intervals [0, T] have a turnpike structure in the following sense: For large T the contribution to the objective functional that comes from the subinterval [T/2, T], i.e., from the second half of the time interval [0, T], is at most of the order 1/T. More generally, the result holds for subintervals of the form [r T,T], where r ∈ (0, 1/2) is a real number. Using this result inductively implies that the decay of the integral on such a subinterval in the objective function is faster than the reciprocal value of a power series in T with positive coefficients. Accordingly, the contribution to the objective value from the final part of the time interval decays rapidly with a growing time horizon. At the end of the paper we present examples for optimal control problems where our results are applicable.

Opis:
Predictive control algorithms have been worked out mainly to control linear plants. There is a great demand to apply different control ideas to nonlinear systems. Using predictive control algorithms for nonlinear systems is a promising technique. Extended horizon one-step-ahead and long-range optimal predictive control algorithms are given here for the parametric Volterra model (which includes also the generalized Hammerstein model). A quadratic cost function is minimized which considers the quadratic deviations of the reference signal and the output signal at a future point (or points) beyond the dead time and also penalizes large control signal increments. For prediction of the output signal, a predictive model is applied which uses information about the input and output signals up to the current time. A predictive transformation of the nonlinear dynamic model is given. The incremental model is advantageous since the cost function contains the control increment and not the control signal itself. An incremental transformation of the predictive forms is also described. Sub-optimal solutions to the optimal control algorithms are discussed with different assumptions for the control signal during the control horizon. The effect of the different strategies and the effect of the tuning parameters is investigated through simulation examples.

Convergence results for two Lagrange-Newton-type methods of solving optimal control problems are presented. It is shown how the methods can be applied to a class of optimal control problems for nonlinear ODEs, subject to mixed control-state constraints. The first method reduces to an SQP algorithm. It does not require any information on the structure of the optimal solution. The other one is the shooting method, where information on the structure of the optimal solution is exploited. In each case, conditions for well-posedness and local quadratic convergence are given. The scope of applicability is briefly discussed.

Opis:
Wireless Backbone Networks (WBNs) equipped with Multi-Radio Multi-Channel (MRMC) configurations do experience power control problems such as the inter-channel and co-channel interference, high energy consumption at multiple queues and unscalable network connectivity. Such network problems can be conveniently modelled using the theory of queue perturbation in the multiple queue systems and also as a weak coupling in a multiple channel wireless network. Consequently, this paper proposes a queue perturbation and weakly coupled based power control approach for WBNs. The ultimate objectives are to increase energy efficiency and the overall network capacity. In order to achieve this objective, a Markov chain model is first presented to describe the behaviour of the steady state probability distribution of the queue energy and buffer states. The singular perturbation parameter is approximated from the coefficients of the Taylor series expansion of the probability distribution. The impact of such queue perturbations on the transmission probability, given some transmission power values, is also analysed. Secondly, the inter-channel interference is modelled as a weakly coupled wireless system. Thirdly, Nash differential games are applied to derive optimal power control signals for each user subject to power constraints at each node. Finally, analytical models and numerical examples show the efficacy of the proposed model in solving power control problems in WBNs.
