Opis:
The paper describes an application of regularization techniques to an automatic choice of parameters driving the learning process in the NM-Delta neural network architecture. The heterogeneous learning algorithm is identified as very similar to the Levenberg-Marquardt method but with a considerably smaller computational cost and different justification of parameter selection. The performance of the modified algorithm proves to be comparable with that of the Levenberg-Marquardt.

Opis:
We propose an efficient numerical algorithm for relative error model reduction based on balanced stochastic truncation. The method uses full-rank factors of the Gramians to be balanced versus each other and exploits the fact that for large-scale systems these Gramians are often of low numerical rank. We use the easy-to-parallelize sign function method as the major computational tool in determining these full-rank factors and demonstrate the numerical performance of the suggested implementation of balanced stochastic truncation model reduction.

Opis:
Newton's iteration is studied for the numerical solution of an elliptic PDE with nonlinear boundary conditions. At each iteration of Newton's method, a conjugate gradient based decomposition method is applied to the matrix of the linearized system. The decomposition is such that all the remaining linear systems have the same constant matrix. Numerical results confirm the savings with respect to the computational cost, compared with the classical Newton method with factorization at each step.

Opis:
Convergence results for two Lagrange-Newton-type methods of solving optimal control problems are presented. It is shown how the methods can be applied to a class of optimal control problems for nonlinear ODEs, subject to mixed control-state constraints. The first method reduces to an SQP algorithm. It does not require any information on the structure of the optimal solution. The other one is the shooting method, where information on the structure of the optimal solution is exploited. In each case, conditions for well-posedness and local quadratic convergence are given. The scope of applicability is briefly discussed.

Opis:
This paper considers parameter estimation of superimposed exponential signals in multiplicative and additive noise which are all independent and identically distributed. A modified Newton–Raphson algorithm is used to estimate the frequencies of the considered model, which is further used to estimate other linear parameters. It is proved that the modified Newton–Raphson algorithm is robust and the corresponding estimators of frequencies attain the same convergence rate with Least Squares Estimators (LSEs) under the same noise conditions, but it outperforms LSEs in terms of the mean squared errors. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by some numerical experiments.

Opis:
We consider a mathematical model which describes the contact between a linearly elastic body and an obstacle, the so-called foundation. The process is static and the contact is bilateral, i.e., there is no loss of contact. The friction is modeled with a nonmotonone law. The purpose of this work is to provide an error estimate for the Galerkin method as well as to present and compare two numerical methods for solving the resulting nonsmooth and nonconvex frictional contact problem. The first approach is based on the nonconvex proximal bundle method, whereas the second one deals with the approximation of a nonconvex problem by a sequence of nonsmooth convex programming problems. Some numerical experiments are realized to compare the two numerical approaches.
