Opis:
A novel procedure is given here for constructing non-negative functions with zero-valued global minima coinciding with eigenvectors of a general real matrix A. Some of these functions are distinct because all their local minima are also global, offering a new way of determining eigenpairs by local optimization. Apart from describing the framework of the method, the error bounds given separately for the approximation of eigenvectors and eigenvalues provide a deeper insight into the fundamentally different nature of their approximations.

Opis:
The article presents new tools for investigating the statistical properties of the harmonic signal autocorrelation function (ACF). These tools enable identification of the ACF estimator errors in measurements in which the triggering of the measurements is non-synchronized. This is important because in many measurement situations the initial phase of the measured signal is random. The developed tools enable testing the ACF estimator of a harmonic signal in the presence of Gaussian noise. These are the formulas on the basis of which the statistical properties of the estimator can be determined, including the bias, the variance and the mean squared error (MSE). For comparison, the article also presents the ACF statistical analysis tools used in the conditions of synchronized measurement triggering, known from the literature. Operation of the new tools is verified by simulation and experimental studies. The conducted research shows that differences between the MSE results obtained with the use of the developed formulas and those attained from simulations and experimental tests are not greater than 1 dB.

Opis:
Estimation of probabilities from empirical data samples has drawn close attention in the scientific community and has been identified as a crucial phase in many machine learning and knowledge discovery research projects and applications. In addition to trivial and straightforward estimation with relative frequency, more elaborated probability estimation methods from small samples were proposed and applied in practice (e.g., Laplace’s rule, the m-estimate). Piegat and Landowski (2012) proposed a novel probability estimation method from small samples Eph√2 that is optimal according to the mean absolute error of the estimation result. In this paper we show that, even though the articulation of Piegat’s formula seems different, it is in fact a special case of the m-estimate, where pa = 1/2 and m = √2. In the context of an experimental framework, we present an in-depth analysis of several probability estimation methods with respect to their mean absolute errors and demonstrate their potential advantages and disadvantages. We extend the analysis from single instance samples to samples with a moderate number of instances. We define small samples for the purpose of estimating probabilities as samples containing either less than four successes or less than four failures and justify the definition by analysing probability estimation errors on various sample sizes.

An adaptive strategy for nonlinear finite-element analysis, based on the combination of error estimation and h-remeshing, is presented. Its two main ingredients are a residual-type error estimator and an unstructured quadrilateral mesh generator. The error estimator is based on simple local computations over the elements and the so-called patches. In contrast to other residual estimators, no flux splitting is required. The adaptive strategy is illustrated by means of a complex nonlinear problem: the failure analysis of a single-edge notched beam. The quasi-brittle response of concrete is modelled by means of a nonlocal damage model.

An approach to estimation of a parametric discrete-time model of a process in the case of some a priori knowledge of the investigated process properties is presented. The knowledge of plant properties is introduced in the form of linear bounds, which can be determined for the coefficient vector of the parametric model studied. The approach yields special biased estimation of model coefficients that preserves demanded properties. A formula for estimation of the model coefficients is derived and combined with a recursive scheme determined for minimization of the sum of absolute model errors. The estimation problem of a model with known static gains of inputs is discussed and proper formulas are derived. This approach can overcome the non-identifiability problem which has been observed during estimation based on measurements recorded in industrial closed-loop control systems. The application of the proposed approach to estimation of a model for an industrial plant (a water injector into the steam flow in a power plant) is presented and discussed.

This paper presents a new formulation for set-membership parameter estimation of fractional systems. In such a context, the error between the measured data and the output model is supposed to be unknown but bounded with a priori known bounds. The bounded error is specified over measurement noise, rather than over an equation error, which is mainly motivated by experimental considerations. The proposed approach is based on the optimal bounding ellipsoid algorithm for linear output-error fractional models. A numerical example is presented to show effectiveness and discuss results.

A new method of optimizing decision feedback parameters for intersymbol interference equalizers is described. The coefficient existing in the decision feedback loop depends on risk qualification of the received decision. We prove that bit error probability can be decreased with this method for any channel with a single interference sample and small Gaussian noise. Experimental results are presented for selected channels. The dependences of optimal feedback parameters on channel interference samples and noise power are presented, too.

In this paper the Sigma-if artificial neural network model is considered, which is a generalization of an MLP network with sigmoidal neurons. It was found to be a potentially universal tool for automatic creation of distributed classification and selective attention systems. To overcome the high nonlinearity of the aggregation function of Sigma-if neurons, the training process of the Sigma-if network combines an error backpropagation algorithm with the self-consistency paradigm widely used in physics. But for the same reason, the classical backpropagation delta rule for the MLP network cannot be used. The general equation for the backpropagation generalized delta rule for the Sigma-if neural network is derived and a selection of experimental results that confirm its usefulness are presented.

We propose new methods for support vector machines using a tree architecture for multi-class classification. In each node of the tree, we select an appropriate binary classifier, using entropy and generalization error estimation, then group the examples into positive and negative classes based on the selected classifier, and train a new classifier for use in the classification phase. The proposed methods can work in time complexity between O(log2 N) and O(N), where N is the number of classes. We compare the performance of our methods with traditional techniques on the UCI machine learning repository using 10-fold cross-validation. The experimental results show that the methods are very useful for problems that need fast classification time or those with a large number of classes, since the proposed methods run much faster than the traditional techniques but still provide comparable accuracy.

A totally involutional, highly scalable PP-1 cipher is proposed, evaluated and discussed. Having very low memory requirements and using only simple and fast arithmetic operations, the cipher is aimed at platforms with limited resources, e.g., smartcards. At the core of the cipher's processing is a carefully designed S-box. The paper discusses in detail all aspects of PP-1 cipher design including S-box construction, permutation and round key scheduling. The quality of the PP-1 cipher is also evaluated with respect to linear cryptanalysis and other attacks. PP-1's concurrent error detection is also discussed. Some processing speed test results are given and compared with those of other ciphers.

The study of human handwriting movements is of great interest to researchers and biologists. It can lead to an understanding of the properties of the biological system that generates the human handwriting movements. With the identification of a dynamical system that exhibits characteristics similar to the biological one, it is possible to study handwriting movements, to identify their driving motor signals and to try to reproduce by machine the handwriting motion. In this paper, we give an analysis of modeling techniques for the handwriting process proposed in the literature. We show that either mathematical models based on the trajectories of handwritten objects or physical models obtained from the dynamic motion of the human hand can be used for modeling the handwriting process. We study the handwriting movements using these approaches and we give an analysis and synthesis of the driving motor signals. We apply the results to the generation of handwritten Arabic letters. We then propose a new synthesis technique where a more promising and realistic model can be obtained. We present the basic idea and expect that some improvement over the previous techniques can be obtained. The technique is based on Feedback Error Learning neural networks.
