ABAQUS
Opis:
Three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out with the ABAQUS/explicit finite element code to study the influence of target boundary conditions on its ballistic limit. 1mm thick 1100-H12 aluminum target of 255 mm span diameter was hit by 19 mm diameter and 50.8 mm length blunt nosed projectile. The mass of the projectile was kept as 52.5 gm. The boundary condition effects on the ballistic limit were investigated by varying the target periphery boundary condition as fully clamped and partially clamped target (75%, 50% and 25%) subjected to projectile impact. The energy absorption and ballistic limit of the target was found to be significantly affected by the boundary conditions. Some of the finite element analysis results were compared with experimental and numerical results reported in international literature and a good agreement between the two was found.

Opis:
The dynamical investigation of two-component poroelastic media is important for practical applications. Analytic solution methods are often not available since they are too complicated for the complex governing sets of equations. For this reason, often some existing numerical methods are used. In this work results obtained with the finite element method are opposed to those obtained by Schanz using the boundary element method. Not only the influence of the number of elements and time steps on the simple example of a poroelastic column but also the impact of different values of the permeability coefficient is investigated.

Opis:
The paper is concerned with a numerical homogenization technique for determination of effective material properties of brick masonry in the elastic range. The homogenization problem is posed in the plane state of stress. The corresponding boundary value problem on a representative cell is discretized by the finite element method. The quadrilateral finite element with four nodes and eight degrees of freedom is applied and our own computer program is developed. The homogenization technique allows one to determine for masonry, which is an inhomogeneous two-phase composite medium, an equivalent homogeneous orthotropic material characterized by five material constants. The homogenized material constants can further be used in an analysis of large-scale masonry structures. The obtained results of numerical simulations are compared with predictions of the value of elastic modulus for masonry by other researches, and qualitative agreement can be observed.
Praca dotyczy numerycznego sposobu homogenizacji muru ceglanego w zakresie sprężystym. Problem homogenizacji postawiono w płaskim stanie naprężenia. Odpowiednie zagadnienie brzegowe na reprezentatywnej komórce zdyskretyzowano metodą elementów skończonych wykorzystując czterowęzłowy element skończony o ośmiu stopniach swobody i opracowany własny program komputerowy.

Opis:
An efficient C0 continuous finite element (FE) model is developed based on a combined theory (refine higher order shear deformation theory (RHSDT) and least square error (LSE) method) for the static analysis of a soft core sandwich plate. In this (RHSDT) theory, the in-plane displacement field for the face sheets and the core is obtained by superposing a global cubically varying displacement field on a zig-zag linearly varying displacement field with a different slope in each layer. The transverse displacement assumes to have a quadratic variation within the core and it remains constant in the faces beyond the core. The proposed model satisfies the condition of transverse shear stress continuity at the layer interfaces and the zero transverse shear stress condition at the top and bottom of the sandwich plate. The nodal field variables are chosen in an efficient manner to circumvent the problem of C1 continuity requirement of the transverse displacements. In order to calculate the accurate through thickness transverse stresses variation, the Least Square Error (LSE) method has been used at the post processing stage. The proposed combined model (RHSDT and LSE) is implemented to analyze the laminated composites and sandwich plates. Many new results are also presented which should be useful for future research.

Opis:
The main goal of this paper is to present coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics and structural analysis for the precise determination of wind impact on internal forces and deformations of structural elements of a longspan roof structure. The Finite Volume Method (FVM) serves for a solution of the fluid flow problem to model the air flow around the structure, whose results are applied in turn as the boundary tractions in the Finite Element Method problem structural solution for the linear elastostatics with small deformations. The first part is carried out with the use of ANSYS 15.0 computer system, whereas the FEM system Robot supports stress analysis in particular roof members. A comparison of the wind pressure distribution throughout the roof surface shows some differences with respect to that available in the engineering designing codes like Eurocode, which deserves separate further numerical studies. Coupling of these two separate numerical techniques appears to be promising in view of future computational models of stochastic nature in large scale structural systems due to the stochastic perturbation method.

Opis:
A two-dimensional Stefan problem is usually introduced as a model of solidification, melting or sublimation phenomena. The two-phase Stefan problem has been studied as a direct problem, where the free boundary separating the two regions is eliminated using a variational inequality (Baiocci, 1977; Baiocchi et al., 1973; Rodrigues, 1980; Saguez, 1980; Srunk and Friedman, 1994), the enthalpy function (Ciavaldini, 1972; Lions, 1969; Nochetto et al.., 1991; Saguez, 1980), or a control problem (El Bagdouri, 1987; Peneau, 1995; Saguez, 1980). In the present work, we provide a new formulation leading to a shape optimization problem. For a semidiscretization in time, we consider an Euler scheme. Under some restrictions related to stability conditions, we prove an L^2-rate of convergence of order 1 for the temperature. In the last part, we study the existence of an optimal shape, compute the shape gradient, and suggest a numerical algorithm to approximate the free boundary. The numerical results obtained show that this method is more efficient compared with the others.

The paper deals with a FEM analysis of dynamic buckling of functionally graded clamped plates under heat flux loading with huge power. The materials of structures as well as their properties are varying in each layer across the plate thickness formulated by the power law distribution. The heat flux was applied evenly to the whole ceramic surface. The analysis was developed in the ANSYS 14.5 software. The duration of the heat flux loading equal to a period of natural fundamental flexural vibrations of given structures was taken into consideration. To implement large deflections of structures, the Green-Lagrange nonlinear-displacement equations and the incremental Newton-Raphson algorithm were applied. An evaluation of the dynamic response of structures was carried out on basis of the Budiansky-Hutchinson criterion. The studies were conducted for different volume fraction distributions and different shapes of the heat flux loading. The computation results of the heat flux versus maximal plate deflection are shown and discussed.

Opis:
Static, vibration and buckling behavior of laminated composite and sandwich skew plates is studied using an efficient C0 FE model developed based on refined higher order zigzag theory. The C0 FE model satisfies the interlaminar shear stress continuity at the interfaces and zero transverse shear stress conditions at plate top and bottom. In this model, the first derivatives of transverse displacement have been treated as independent variables to overcome the problem of C1 continuity associated with the plate theory. The C0 continuity of the present element is compensated in the stiffness matrix formulation by adding a suitable term. In order to avoid stress oscillations observed in the displacement based finite element, the stress field derived from temperature is made consistent with the total strain field by using field consistent approach. Numerical results are presented for different static, vibration and buckling problems by applying the FE model under thermo mechanical loading, where a nine noded C0 continuous isoparametric element is used. It is observed that there are very few results available in the literature on laminated composite and sandwich skew plates based on refined theories. As such many new results are also generated for future reference.

This paper presents the harmonic and vibration analysis of functionally graded plates using the finite element method. Initially, the plates are assumed isotropic and the material properties of it are assumed to vary continuously through their thickness direction according to a power-law distribution of the volume fractions of the plate constituents. The four noded shell element is used to analyse the functionally graded plates. Four functionally graded plates-Al/Al2O3, Al/ZrO2, Ti–6Al–4V/Aluminium oxide, and SUS304/Si3N4 are considered in the study, and their results are obtained so that the right choice can be made in applications in high temperature environment and in reducing the vibration amplitudes in applications such as aircrafts, rockets, missiles, etc. Numerical results for the natural frequency and harmonic response amplitude are presented. Results are compared and validated with available results in the literature. Effects of boundary conditions, material and damping on natural frequency and harmonic response of the functionally graded plates are also investigated.

This paper describes application of a hyper-graph grammar system for modeling a three-dimensional adaptive finite element method. The hyper-graph grammar approach allows obtaining a linear computational cost of adaptive mesh transformations and computations performed over refined meshes. The computations are done by a hyper-graph grammar driven algorithm applicable to three-dimensional problems. For the case of typical refinements performed towards a point or an edge, the algorithm yields linear computational cost with respect to the mesh nodes for its sequential execution and logarithmic cost for its parallel execution. Such hyper-graph grammar productions are the mathematical formalism used to describe the computational algorithm implementing the finite element method. Each production indicates the smallest atomic task that can be executed concurrently. The mesh transformations and computations by using the hyper-graph grammar-based approach have been tested in the GALOIS environment. We conclude the paper with some numerical results performed on a shared-memory Linux cluster node, for the case of three-dimensional computational meshes refined towards a point, an edge and a face.

The possibilities of application of the perturbation method to the analysis of strongly non-linear free vibrations of beams are discussed. The geometrical non-linearity is taken into account. The finite element method is used for the description of the dynamic behaviour of beams. The first order perturbation equation is solved and the obtained solution is compared with the solution found with the help of the harmonic balance method which is widely used and applicable to the analysis of strongly non-linear dynamic systems. It was proved that both solutions are almost identical and differences are negligibly small. The numerical procedure enabling determination of backbone curves is also briefly described. Theoretical results are supplemented by a description of the results of typical calculations.

Opis:
This paper presents the numerical modelling of strengthening a steel-concrete composite beam. The main assumption is that the strengthening is not the effect of the state of a failure of a structure, but it resulted from the need to increase the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of the structure (for example: due to a change in the use of the object). The expected solution is strengthening without the necessity to completely unload the structures (to reduce the scope of works, the cost of modernization and to shorten the time). The problem is presented on the example of a composite beam which was strengthened through welding a steel plate to the lower flange of the steel beam. The paper describes how energy parameters are used to evaluate the efficiency of structures’ strengthening and proposes an appropriate solution.
Wzmacnianie zostało zrealizowane poprzez dospawanie stalowego płaskownika do pasa dolnego profilu stalowego. W pracy przedstawiono zastosowanie parametrów energetycznych przy ocenie efektywności procesu wzmacniania konstrukcji i doborze optymalnego rozwiązania.

The article presents a numerical model of a typical composite girder which consists of a strip of a reinforced concrete slab resting on a steel beam. Compatibility of horizontal displacements is assumed in the slab-beam contact region. The structure is subjected to unidirectional bending. The cross-section is divided into layers, either steel or concrete, and then analysed by applying non-linear characteristics of materials. The problem is solved by employing the finite element method. For a nonlinear system of equations the modified Newton-Raphson method is used. Examples of verification and illustration are enclosed. Arterial walls are a multilayer structures with nonlinear material characteristics. Furthermore, residua stresses exist in unloaded state (zero-pressure condition) and they affect arterial behavior. To investigate these phenomena a number of theoretical and numerical studies were performed, however no experimental validation was proposed and realized yet. We cannot get rid of residual stresses without damaging the arterial segment. In this paper we propose a novel experiment to validate a numerical model of artery with residual stresses. The inspiration for our study originates from experiments made by Dobrin on dogs’ arteries (1999). We applied the idea of turning the artery inside out. After such an operation the sequence of layer is reversed and the residual stresses are re-ordered. We performed several pressure-inflation tests on human Common Carotid Arteries (CCA) in normal and inverted configurations. The nonlinear responses of arterial behavior were obtained and compared to the numerical model. Computer simulations were carried out using the commercial software which applied the finite element method (FEM). Then, these results were discussed.

This research focuses on studying the effect of the constitutive law adopted for a matrix material on the compressive response of a unidirectional fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite. To investigate this effect, a periodic unit cell model of a unidirectional composite with an initial fiber waviness and inelastic behavior of the matrix was used. The sensitivity of the compressive strength to the hydrostatic pressure, the flow rule and the fiber misalignment angle were presented. The model was verified against an analytical solution and experimental data. Results of this study indicate that a micromechanical model with correctly identified material parameters provides a useful alternative to theoretical models and experimentation.

This study deals with experimental and numerical investigations of elastic wave propagation in steel bars partially embedded in mortar. The bars with different bonding lengths were tested. Two types of damage were considered: damage of the steel bar and damage of the mortar. Longitudinal waves were excited by a piezoelectric actuator and a vibrometer was used to non-contact measurements of velocity signals. Numerical calculations were performed using the finite elements method. As a result, this paper discusses the possibility of condition assessment in bars embedded in mortar by means of elastic waves.

The vibration characteristics of stiffened plates with cutouts subjected to in-plane partial edge loadings at one end at the plate boundaries are studied using the finite element method. Buckling loads and vibration frequencies are determined for different cutout ratios and extent of partial edge loading at one end. In the structural modelling, the plate and the stiffeners are treated as separate elements where the compatibility between these two types of elements is maintained. The main elegance of the formulation lies in the treatment of the stiffeners. The stiffeners can be placed anywhere within the plate element, and need not be placed on the nodal lines. The vibration characteristics are discussed and the results are compared with those available in the literature. Numerical results are presented for a range of cutout to plate size from 0 to 0.8.

The main aim of this work is a computational nonlinear analysis of a high strength steel corrugated-web plate girder with a very detailed and realistic mesh including vertical ribs, all the fillet welds and supporting areas. The analysis is carried out to verify mechanical structural response under transient fire temperature conditions accounting for an efficiency and accuracy of three various transient coupled thermo-elastic models. All the resulting stress distributions, deformation modes and their time variations, critical loads and eigenfrequencies as well as failure times are compared in all these models. Nonlinearities include material, geometrical and contact phenomena up to the temperature fluctuations together with temperature-dependent constitutive relations for high strength steel. They result partially from steady state and transient experimental tests or from the additional designing rules included in Eurocodes. A fire scenario includes an application of the normative fire gas temperature curve on the bottom flange of the entire girder for a period of 180 minutes. It is computed using sequentially coupled thermo-elastic Finite Element Method analyses. These account for heat conductivity, radiation and convection. The FEM model consists of a combination of 3D hexahedral and tetrahedral solid finite elements and uses temperature-dependent material and physical parameters, whose values are taken after the experiments presented in Eurocodes. Numerical results presented here demonstrate a fundamental role of the lower flange in carrying fire loads according to this scenario and show a contribution of the ribs and of the welds to the strength of the entire structure.

The forced vibration of a multi-layered plate-strip with initial stress under the action of an arbitrary inclined time-harmonic force resting on a rigid foundation is considered. Within the framework of the piecewise homogeneous body model with the use of the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed bodies (TLTEWISB), a mathematical modelling is presented in plane strain state. It is assumed that there exists the complete contact interaction at the interface between the layers and the materials of the layer are linearly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The governing system of the partial differential equations of motion for the considered problem is solved approximately by employing the Finite Element Method (FEM). Further, the influence of the initial stress parameter on the dynamic response of the plate-strip is presented.

A numerical technique is employed to derive a solution to the transient natural convection flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past an impulsively started infinite isothermal vertical plate with uniform mass diffusion in the presence of a magnetic field and homogeneous chemical reaction of first order. The governing equations are solved using implicit finite-difference method. The effects of velocity, temperature and concentration for different parameters such as the magnetic field parameter, chemical reaction parameter, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, thermal Grashof number and mass Grashof number are studied. It is observed that the fluid velocity decreases with increasing the chemical reaction parameter and the magnetic field parameter.

Finite element and response surface methods were utilized to investigate the stress concentration factor induced in isotropic rectangular plates with two identical countersunk rivet holes due to uniaxial tension. In this investigation, the finite element model was constructed using ANSYS software and used to produce stress concentration factor (SCF) data. Additionally, the response surface method (RSM) was implemented to characterize the influence of the problem geometric parameters on the SCF. Besides, RSM combined with least squares regression methods were employed to formulate a simple and effective equation to mathematically compute the stress concentration factor […] value. This equation was consequently verified with finite element analysis (FEA) results. Lastly, an optimum plate and holes configuration that minimizes the SCF was suggested and hence recommended.

Computers are becoming sufficiently powerful to permit to numerically solve problems such as the wave equation with high-order methods. In this article we will consider Lagrange finite elements of order k and show how it is possible to automatically generate the mass and stiffness matrices of any order with the help of symbolic computation software. We compare two high-order time discretizations: an explicit one using a Taylor expansion in time (a Cauchy-Kowalewski procedure) and an implicit Runge-Kutta scheme. We also construct in a systematic way a high-order quadrature which is optimal in terms of the number of points, which enables the use of mass lumping, up to P5 elements. We compare computational time and effort for several codes which are of high order in time and space and study their respective properties.

It is widely known that lateral-torsional buckling of a member under bending and warping restraints of its cross-sections in the steel structures are crucial for estimation of their safety and durability. Although engineering codes for steel and aluminum structures support the designer with the additional analytical expressions depending even on the boundary conditions and internal forces diagrams, one may apply alternatively the traditional Finite Element or Finite Difference Methods (FEM, FDM) to determine the so-called critical moment representing this phenomenon. The principal purpose of this work is to compare three different ways of determination of critical moment, also in the context of structural sensitivity analysis with respect to the structural element length. Sensitivity gradients are determined by the use of both analytical and the central finite difference scheme here and contrasted also for analytical, FEM as well as FDM approaches. Computational study is provided for the entire family of the steel I- and H - beams available for the practitioners in this area, and is a basis for further stochastic reliability analysis as well as durability prediction including possible corrosion progress.

Thin-walled steel elements in the form of openwork columns with variable geometrical parameters of holes were studied. The samples of thin-walled composite columns were modelled numerically. They were subjected to axial compression to examine their behavior in the critical and post-critical state. The numerical models were articulately supported on the upper and lower edges of the cross-section of the profiles. The numerical analysis was conducted only with respect to the non-linear stability of the structure. The FEM analysis was performed until the material achieved its yield stress. This was done to force the loss of stability by the structures. The numerical analysis was performed using the ABAQUS® software. The numerical analysis was performed only for the elastic range to ensure the operating stability of the tested thin-walled structures.

Selected types of parallel manipulator designs, encountered in commercial and laboratory-made designs described in the medical robotics literature, will serve as the research material. Among other things, computer simulations in the ANSYS 13.0 CAD/CAE software environment, employing the finite element method, will be used. The kinematics of the solution of manipulator with the parallelogram mechanism will be determined in order to provide a more complete description. These results will form the basis for the decision regarding the possibility of applying a parallelogram mechanism in an original prototype of a telemanipulator arm.

For the elastic-plastic analysis of the nozzle connections the 2D finite element method and plasticity theory with strain hardening are used. The results of the comparison of the plastic limit pressure obtained on the basis of different known criteria and the proposed criterion are presented. A parametric study of ellipsoidal heads with a nozzle under internal pressure loading was performed. The effects of nondimensional geometric parameters of shell intersection on the plastic limit pressure are discussed.

Endoprosthesis stem fractures are among the rarest complications that occur after hip joint arthroplasty. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the causes of the fractures of the Aura II stem neck, which is an element of an endoprosthesis implanted in a patient. In order to achieve it, a radiogram was evaluated, the FEM analysis was carried out for the hip joint replaced using the Aura II prosthesis and scanning tests as well as a chemical analysis were performed for the focus of fatigue. The tests performed indicate that the most probable causes leading to the fatigue fracture of the Aura II stem under examination were material defects in the process of casting and forging (forging the material with delamination and the presence of brittle oxides and carbides) that resulted in a significant reduction of strength and resistance to corrosion. In the light of an unprecedented stem neck fracture, this information should be an indication for non-destructive tests of ready-made stems aiming to discover the material and technological defects that may arise in the process of casting and drop forging.

This paper is concerned with the frictionless unilateral contact problem (i.e., a Signorini problem with the elasticity operator). We consider a mixed finite element method in which the unknowns are the displacement field and the contact pressure. The particularity of the method is that it furnishes a normal displacement field and a contact pressure satisfying the sign conditions of the continuous problem. The a priori error analysis of the method is closely linked with the study of a specific positivity preserving operator of averaging type which differs from the one of Chen and Nochetto. We show that this method is convergent and satisfies the same a priori error estimates as the standard approach in which the approximated contact pressure satisfies only a weak sign condition. Finally we perform some computations to illustrate and compare the sign preserving method with the standard approach.

Opis:
Recently conducted studies have shown that significant benefits are to be gained by joining steel beams and timber slabs. Steel-timber composite beams present a sustainable solution for the construction industry because of their high strength and stiffness, and lower carbon footprint and self-weight than steel-concrete composite beams. The behaviour of steel-timber composite beams is still being investigated to reduce knowledge gaps. This paper presents theoretical and numerical analyses of steel-timber composite beams consisting of steel girders and laminated veneer lumber slabs. The elastic and plastic resistance to bending were estimated analytically based on the elastic analysis and the rigid-plastic theory. The impact of the composite action, the LVL slab thickness, the cross-section of a steel girder and the steel grade on resistance to bending was evaluated. The load-deflection curve of the composite beam was obtained using a 2D finite element model, in which timber failure was captured using the Hashin damage model. The results of the numerical simulation were in good agreement with the ones of the theoretical analyses.

Opis:
Motion planning, i.e., steering a system from one state to another, is a basic question in automatic control. For a certain class of systems described by ordinary differential equations and called flat systems (Fliess et al., 1995; 1999a), motion planning admits simple and explicit solutions. This stems from an explicit description of the trajectories by an arbitrary time function y, the flat output, and a finite number of its time derivatives. Such explicit descriptions are related to old problems on Monge equations and equivalence investigated by Hilbert and Cartan. The study of several examples (the car with n-trailers and the non-holonomic snake, pendulums in series and the heavy chain, the heat equation and the Euler-Bernoulli flexible beam) indicates that the notion of flatness and its underlying explicit description can be extended to infinite-dimensional systems. As in the finite-dimensional case, this property yields simple motion planning algorithms via operators of compact support. For the non-holonomic snake, such operators involve non-linear delays. For the heavy chain, they are defined via distributed delays. For heat and Euler-Bernoulli systems, their supports are reduced to a point and their definition domain coincides with the set of Gevrey functions of order 2.

The purpose of this research is to specify the differences between the performance of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and reinforced concrete (RC) walls. The study is done by using the finite element structural analysis and design software, StruSoft FEM-Design, in order to model, analyse and design a reference building located in the city of Gävle in Sweden. The building is firstly modelled, analysed and designed using RC walls and then the RC walls are replaced with CLT walls. In both buildings, other load-bearing elements such as slabs, beams and columns are made of RC while the roof beams are made of glulam. It is found that employing RC has advantages, especially regarding thickness. The results show that the CLT walls require larger dimensions than their RC counterparts. Meanwhile, it is demonstrated that the slabs, beams and columns made of RC in the building having the CLT walls require more reinforcement or larger thickness than the case of walls made of RC. Moreover, the total weight of the building having the CLT walls is 74% of the building having the RC walls. The lower weight of the building having the CLT walls has great advantages such as having lighter foundation and being cost-effective and also beneficial for the environment.

Opis:
The paper offers a new approach to handling difficult parametric inverse problems in elasticity and thermo-elasticity, formulated as global optimization ones. The proposed strategy is composed of two phases. In the first, global phase, the stochastic hp-HGS algorithm recognizes the basins of attraction of various objective minima. In the second phase, the local objective minimizers are closer approached by steepest descent processes executed singly in each basin of attraction. The proposed complex strategy is especially dedicated to ill-posed problems with multimodal objective functionals. The strategy offers comparatively low computational and memory costs resulting from a double-adaptive technique in both forward and inverse problem domains. We provide a result on the Lipschitz continuity of the objective functional composed of the elastic energy and the boundary displacement misfits with respect to the unknown constitutive parameters. It allows common scaling of the accuracy of solving forward and inverse problems, which is the core of the introduced double-adaptive technique. The capability of the proposed method of finding multiple solutions is illustrated by a computational example which consists in restoring all feasible Young modulus distributions minimizing an objective functional in a 3D domain of a photo polymer template obtained during step and flash imprint lithography.

Opis:
The use of geosynthetic reinforcement to enhance the ultimate load-bearing capacity and reduce the anticipated settlement of the shallow foundation has gained sufficient attention in the geotechnical field. The improved performance of the shallow foundation is achieved by providing one or more layers of geosynthetics below the foundation. The full wraparound technique proved to be efficient for the confinement of soil mass and reduction in settlement of foundation however lacks the literature to ascertain the performances of such footing under dynamic loading. In view of the above, the present study examines the effect of geosynthetic layers having a finite length with full wraparound ends as a reinforcement layer, placed horizontally at a suitable depth below the foundation using the finite element modeling (FEM) and evaluates the ultimate load-bearing capacity of a strip footing resting on loose and dense coarse-grained earth beds under seismic loading and further compared to those of footing resting on unreinforced earth bed. Moreover, the effect of horizontal seismic acceleration coefficient (kh) on the ultimate load-bearing capacity has been investigated by varying kh from 0.1 to 0.6 at an interval of 0.1, for both reinforced and unreinforced earth bed having loose and dense soil strata. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that by adopting the new practice of using the geosynthetic reinforcement with the full wraparound ends in foundations, it is possible to support relatively heavier structures under static as well as dynamic loading without allowing large footing settlements. From the outcomes of the present study, it is noted that the ultimate load-bearing capacity of footing resting on loose and dense sand bed found to be improved by 60% and 18% for soils having friction angle of 25° and 40°, respectively compared to respective unreinforced earth beds under static condition.

Opis:
We consider a class of two- and three-dimensional h-refined meshes generated by an adaptive finite element method. We introduce an element partition tree, which controls the execution of the multi-frontal solver algorithm over these refined grids. We propose and study algorithms with polynomial computational cost for the optimization of these element partition trees. The trees provide an ordering for the elimination of unknowns. The algorithms automatically optimize the element partition trees using extensions of dynamic programming. The construction of the trees by the dynamic programming approach is expensive. These generated trees cannot be used in practice, but rather utilized as a learning tool to propose fast heuristic algorithms. In this first part of our paper we focus on the dynamic programming approach, and draw a sketch of the heuristic algorithm. The second part will be devoted to a more detailed analysis of the heuristic algorithm extended for the case of hp-adaptive grids.

Opis:
Initial geometric imperfections are important for simulating local buckling in numerical models. References are found in the technical literature regarding open-section cold formed profiles. This work presents new procedures applied to a robust and closed-section cold formed profile subject to local buckling, and the use of procedures described in the technical literature already successfully used for open section profiles. The difference of this work in relation to the research already carried out is in the type of profile studied, in the mode of failure of the same and in the form of determination of the initial imperfections. The object of study of this work is a closed-section cold formed box profile with a short length when compared with its cross section and with local buckling failure mode. The strategies used in the present work to consider the initial geometric imperfections were to perform the linear stability analysis using the finite element method to obtain the local buckling mode that represents the deformed box profile geometry, to apply a multiplication factor in the displacements, replace the new geometry node coordinates for all profile nodes to induce the local buckling deformation mode, with model validation through experimental testing and the Effective Width Method (MLE) (ABNT NBR 14762 [1]). Finally, using the results of the collapse load of the experimental trial as a basis, it was possible to compare the results obtained by MLE and MEF. Thus, the presentation of this work used a methodology that describes the local buckling behavior and verified the precepts of the existing norms on the subject, combining theoretical and experimental methods, as they bring a better understanding of the structural problem in question.

This paper is concerned with the bending problem of a fibre-composite plate in the elastic range. Within the classical Kirchhoff plate theory, two approaches are utilized. In the model due to Świtka, the fibre-composite plate is treated as a homogeneous medium with a number of embedded families of fibres, while in the second model the plate is considered as a system of orthotropic layers. The bending problem is formulated in classical and variational forms and solved by finite element method. We have developed our own computer code and numerically compared predictions of the two models and other models available in the program ABAQUS on test examples. Numerical results illustrating influence of the placement of fibres on the quantities of interest are also included.

An efficiency of the generalized tenth order stochastic perturbation technique in determination of the basic probabilistic characteristics of up to the fourth order of dynamic response of Euler-Bernoulli beams with Gaussian uncertain damping is verified in this work. This is done on civil engineering application of a two-bay reinforced concrete beam using the Stochastic Finite Element Method implementation and its contrast with traditional Monte-Carlo simulation based Finite Element Method study and also with the semi-analytical probabilistic approach. The special purpose numerical implementation of the entire Stochastic perturbation-based Finite Element Method has been entirely programmed in computer algebra system MAPLE 2019 using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method. Further usage of the proposed technique to analyze stochastic reliability of the given structure subjected to dynamic oscillatory excitation is also included and discussed here because of a complete lack of the additional detailed demands in the current European designing codes.

This study evaluates the movement of a frame built on soft soil under seismic excitation taking into account soil-structure interaction. First, the study was evaluated using the finite element method, then, by using a substructure method which modelled the soil using springs and dampers in a linear and nonlinear study. Rheological models were determined using impedance functions, calculated using a numerical program CONAN. These dynamic impedances are shown in the displacement vector of a three-degrees-of-freedom frame, which was calculated on the basis of lateral forces distributed over the structure height using the equivalent static method. In this regard, two different calculation norms were chosen; RPA2003 and UBC97. Finally, a parametric study was carried out, based on the effects of soil densification and the foundation geometry on the response of the RC frame.

The main aim of this paper is to present a Stochastic Finite Element Method analysis with reference to principal design parameters of bridges for pedestrians: eigenfrequency and deflection of bridge span. They are considered with respect to random thickness of plates in boxed-section bridge platform, Young modulus of structural steel and static load resulting from crowd of pedestrians. The influence of the quality of the numerical model in the context of traditional FEM is shown also on the example of a simple steel shield. Steel structures with random parameters are discretized in exactly the same way as for the needs of traditional Finite Element Method. Its probabilistic version is provided thanks to the Response Function Method, where several numerical tests with random parameter values varying around its mean value enable the determination of the structural response and, thanks to the Least Squares Method, its final probabilistic moments.

The main purpose is to present the stochastic perturbation-based Finite Element Method analysis of the stability in the issues related to the influence of high temperature resulting from a fire directly connected with the reliability analysis of such structures. The thin-walled beam structures with constant cross-sectional thickness are uploaded with typical constant loads, variable loads and, additionally, a temperature increase and we look for the first critical value equivalent to the global stability loss. Such an analysis is carried out in the probabilistic context to determine as precisely as possible the safety margins according to the civil engineering Eurocode statements. To achieve this goal we employ the additional design-oriented Finite Element Method program and computer algebra system to get the analytical polynomial functions relating the critical pressure (or force) and several random design parameters; all the models are state-dependent as we consider an additional reduction of the strength parameters due to the temperature increase. The first four probabilistic moments of the critical forces are computed assuming that the input random parameters have all Gaussian probability functions truncated to the positive values only. Finally, the reliability index is calculated according to the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) by an application of the limit function as a difference in-between critical pressure and maximum compression stress determined in the given structures to verify their durability according to the demands of EU engineering designing codes related to the fire situation.
