Tragedias de amor
Juan de Arce Solórceno
literary representation
faction of the Duke of Lerma - Opis:
- The Tragedias de amor, a pastoral novel published in 1607 by Juan Arce Solórceno, includes a literary portrait of Pedro Fernández de Castro, 7th count of Lemos (1576-1622). Keen on literary creation and patron of prestigious writers, he was also a great statesman whose first political steps were due to his blood relationship with the duke of Lerma. His dual characterization in the novel—youth and wisdom—is the same as in the other political portraits of the aristocrat written by his protégés. Th is helped his ambitions: without neglecting the loyalty debt to Lerma, he wanted to emphasize his own qualities and to legitimate his rise. But the portrait of the Tragedias de amor also presents two main specificities. First,—the sole time in the representation of the count—he appears with his two brothers. We can see in this triple picture both the harmony and the collective strategy of an ambitious family. Secondly, it appears that this is the portrait of a portrait, since the narrator does not directly present the brothers themselves but describes their statues. The linearity of the written portrait guides the reader’s imaginary look and leads to the deification of the portrayed figures. The article tries to emphasize the propaganda strategy of a familial micro-structure within the faction of the duke of Lerma.
