Opis:
This research seeks to determine whether the cross-country differences in return and volatility metrics in various country equity indices can be explained by differences in economic development. We base the study on the MSCI IMI net income indices on two samples: a 51-country sample from the period 31 May 2002 to 28 February 2022, and a 75-country sample from the period 30 November 2010 to 28 February 2022. In this study, countries are grouped into four categories: frontier, emerging, early-developed, and developed, based on gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. The Kruskal–Wallis rank sum test is used to find cross-group differences, and the results are further analyzed with the pairwise Wilcoxon rank sum test with the Holm–Bonferroni p value adjustment method. The results are relatively unintuitive and show that there is no significant cross-group difference in daily and monthly returns. There is evidence of a considerable difference in volatility metrics, especially in the case of the emerging market group, which is significantly different from the three other groups. The results are slightly sensitive to time period change and very sensitive to changes in income categories of some countries.

Opis:
In this study, we analyse the performance of option pricing models using 5-minutes transactional data for the Japanese Nikkei 225 index options. We compare 6 different option pricing models: the Black (1976) model with different assumptions about the volatility process (realized volatility with and without smoothing, historical volatility and implied volatility), the stochastic volatility model of Heston (1993) and the GARCH(1,1) model. To assess the model performance, we use median absolute percentage error based on differences between theoretical and transactional options prices. We present our results with respect to 5 classes of option moneyness, 5 classes of option time to maturity and 2 option types (calls and puts). The Black model with implied volatility (BIV) comes as the best and the GARCH(1,1) as the worst one. For both call and put options, we observe the clear relation between average pricing errors and option moneyness: high error values for deep OTM options and the best fit for deep ITM options. Pricing errors also depend on time to maturity, although this relationship depend on option moneyness. For low value options (deep OTM and OTM), we obtained lower errors for longer maturities. On the other hand, for high value options (ITM and deep ITM) pricing errors are lower for short times to maturity. We obtained similar average pricing errors for call and put options. Moreover, we do not see any advantage of much complex and time-consuming models. Additionally, we describe liquidity of the Nikkei225 option pricing market and try to compare the results we obtain here with a detailed study for Polish emerging option market (Kokoszczyński et al. 2010b).

Opis:
Despite recent studies focused on comparing the dynamics of market efficiency between Bitcoin and other traditional assets, there is a lack of knowledge about whether Bitcoin and emerging markets efficiency behave similarly. This paper aims to compare the market efficiency dynamics between Bitcoin and the emerging stock markets. In particular, this study indicates whether the dynamics of Bitcoin market efficiency mimic those of emerging stock markets. Thus, the paper’s contribution emerges from the combination of Bitcoin and emerging markets in the field of dynamics of market efficiency. The dynamics of market efficiency are measured using the Hurst exponent in the rolling window. The study uses daily data for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index and the Bitcoin market over the period 2011–2022. Our results show that there is at most a moderate correlation between the dynamics of Bitcoin and emerging stock markets’ efficiency over the entire study period. The strongest correlations occur mainly in periods of high economic policy uncertainty in the largest Bitcoin mining countries. Therefore, the association between Bitcoin market efficiency and emerging stock markets’ efficiency may strengthen with an increase in economic policy uncertainty. These findings may be useful for investors and portfolio managers in constructing better investment strategies.
