Opis:
A search for interrelations between natural conditions and changes in population distribution may be a significant subject of regional geography research. It is especially promising to explore this issue as exemplified by France, where we have specific statistical data from censuses carried out in administrative units which have remained unchanged for years. The paper discusses methods of searching for such interrelations on the basis of chosen examples.

Opis:
This paper presents the changes in urban population density in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in an area of approximately 20,000 km2 in southern Poland, which includes close to 100 towns and cities with a population of almost 4.5 million (in 2011) and an urbanisation index over 70%. It is the most urbanised part of Poland and includes the Cracow agglomeration and the Upper Silesian conurbation. The analysis was performed using one of the statistical methods for estimating discrete distributions, the kernel function method. The conclusions served as a basis for the presentation of changes occurring in this area against the backdrop of political and economic transformation in Poland, as well as a scientific discussion concerning the state and future of the merging of these agglomerations in the light of the factors discussed.

Changes in population concentration in the Suwalki Province in the years 1946-1975

Opis:
Population of the Suwałki Province underwent substantial transformations in the post - war period. The transformations were due to the migration processes connected with peopleing the western and northern areas as well as with growing industrialization aind urbanization. The above mentioned trasformations were expressed in the chainges of population concentration in the province. In the process of population growth in the Suwałki Province, two basic stages can be distinguished. The first, comprising the years 1946-1950, was connected above all with peopleing of the western part of the region. The sence of population transformations in that period consisted in liquidating the differences in peopleing between the eastern and western parts of the province; the differences which considerably limited the possibilities of economic development. The process of peopleing the country area produced in the years 1946-1960 a tendency of more even distribrution of the population in the province. This phenomenon was closely related to the growing hierarchization of country settlements. The network of country settlements underwent considerable disorders directly after II World War. There was a shortage of settlements with super - regional functions, i.e. settlements that modify considerably distribution of population. However, at the beginning of the sixties, a growth of population concentration occurred in the Suwałki Province, being a consequence of the growing role of towns. Three main town centres, i.e. Suwałki, Ełk and Augustów, have always been playing the dominant role in the process. These towns, due to a relatively high level of industrialization, became the main areas of population conentration, at the same time the process included the immediate vicinity of the towns. The role of remaining towns of the region, on the other hand, was (and still is) much smaller in the process of population concentration, which seems to be a reflection of their small economic potential. In the consequence of the above mentioned processes, population concentration has advanced slower in the Suwałki Province averagely than in whole Poland, not mentioning highly industrialized and urbanized regions. This tendency reveals that the town network of the Suwałki Province does not conform to the requirements of the contemporary social - economic life. The town network of the Suwałki Province is still a relatively homogeneous system whose individual elements are relatively little differentiated with regard to size and functions performed. The result is that the character of the town network is unfit for stemming migrations of people from the country areas of the Suwałki Province which process has been intensified in the recent years. This can be of considerable importance for preparing the optimum wariant of the economic structure and for realization of basic directions of social-economic development of the region.

Opis:
The area of Chile is populated very irregularly, which is caused to a big degree by the diversity of the natural environment. These irregularities are becoming more intense in consequence of the increasing internal migrations. In general, Chile is divided into four regions (borders run along the parallels): Northern, Central, Central-Southern and Southern. Since 1930 the contribution of the Central region inhabited by 71 % of the population on 14% of the whole area has been increasing constantly. The great majority of migrations proceed to the capital province Santiago and the neighbouring province Valparaiso. The most of emigrants come from the Central-Southern region, whosebcontribution in the population of the country is decreasing constantly. In the Northern region, only the very northern province Tarapaca with the duty-free zone of Arica has a favourable balance of migration, the other regions are becoming depopulated. The sparsely populated Southern region has a favourable balance of migration, high in relative numbers and relatively low in absolute numbers. The majority of migrants proceed to the big cities, whereas the rural areas are becoming depopulated. Recently, the policy of settlement of the sparsely populated areas, specially in the south of the country, has been carrierd on.

Opis:
The changes that take place in the structure of agricultural population according to the maintenance sources, lie in the fact that people leave work in agriculture for non-agricultural professions. The result of this process is a decrease of the percentage of agricultural population. This is a process of economic urbanization, whose speed is different in individual regions and historic periods as it depends on the following: birth-rate of the professionaly active population in towns and in the country, proportion between the development rate of industry and agriculture, labour demand of the production techniques in agriculture, the character of technology progress in industry, and many other factors like e.g. the obtained level of economy. The process of the economic urbanization of the country has been slower in the Suwałki Province so far than in whole Poland. This was caused by the dominant role of agriculture, however, not very well provided with means of production and low level of urbanization and industrialization. According the forecast of the agricultural population in the communes of the province, made by means of Markov chains model, the percentage of this population will decrease from 74.5% in 1975 to 67.4% in 1980 and to 63.7% in 1990 which should be considered to be moderate speed. The average decrease of the percentage of the agricultural population in the years 1980-1990 will be 4.1%, at the same time in the typically agricultural communes, like those situated in the north - east part of the province, it will be lower even than 0.8%, whereas in the communes with well developed recreative function and forest e.g. in the western part of the province, it will be higher even than 8.2%.
