Andrzej Tomaszewski jest typografem, poligrafem i redaktorem. Jego dorobek zawodowy jest godny podziwu, a sam A. Tomaszewski, który zaprojektował szatę graficzną dla ponad 260 książek i czasopism, uważany jest za jednego z najważniejszych autorytetów z zakresu typografii w Polsce. Projektant jest również autorem wielu publikacji na temat praktycznych i teoretycznych aspektów projektowania książki. Opracowana przez niego definicja typografii jest jedną z najczęściej przywoływanych w polskiej literaturze fachowej. W 2015 roku, jako Komisarz Konkursu PTWK Najpiękniejsza Książka Roku, uporządkował i przygotował kryteria oceny publikacji biorących udział w konkursie. Badania biograficzne na temat wybitnych typografów są ważną częścią badań bibliologicznych. Pozwalają na ukazanie złożonych kwestii projektowania pięknych i funkcjonalnych publikacji. Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie i omówienia poglądów A. Tomaszewskiego na temat definiowania typografii, zadań typografa, projektowania książki oraz koncepcji pięknej książki.
Andrzej Tomaszewski is a typographer, pressman, and editor. Over the years, he has designed the artwork of more than 260 books and magazines and is currently regarded one of the major authority figures in the field of typography in Poland. Tomaszewski is also the author of many publications on the subject of practical and theoretical aspects of book design. His definition of “typography” is the one (that has been) most often referred to in Polish specialist literature. In 2015, as the commissioner of the contest named “Konkurs PTWK Najpiękniejsza Książka Roku”, he created and systematised the grading criteria for the entres. Biographical research on careers of some eminent typographers constitues a significant part of bibliology studies. It allows the reader to detect complex aspects of designing publications that would be both functional and beautiful. The aim of this article is to introduce and discuss Tomaszewski’s outlook on defining the meaning of “typography,” typographer’s role, book design, and the concept of a beautiful book.

The article focuses on the book production in the 18th century, referring to the preserved documents enabling studies on the publishing process, and the development of book prices at the final period of the noble Polish Republic. Preserved account books present management strategies of publishing companies, the cost of materials, and ways to price the work of typesetters and printers. The other source consists of inserate prints announcing publishing subscriptions, and giving accounts of subsequent editorial and printing works. These materials are extremely valuable, as there are only a very few of them preserved in Poland due to changing fortunes of the printing houses.

W artykule przestawiono Słownik pracowników książki polskiej (1972, 1986, 2000, 2010, 2016) jako podstawowe źródło z zakresu biografistyki bibliologicznej do badań nad dziejami książki polskiej za granicą od XV do XXI w. Wskazano ośrodki polonijne rozsiane w świecie – od dalekiej Brazylii poprzez bliższe Polsce kraje zachodniej i południowej Europy aż do północnych rubieży państwa carów, później Związku Radzieckiego. Dokonana analiza zawartości publikacji pozwala stwierdzić, iż twórcy instytucji książki polskiej za granicą i ich pracownicy (było ich ok. 170) reprezentują wszystkie profesje związane z produkcją, gromadzeniem i dystrybucją książek, a funkcjonowanie owych placówek i ludzi w środowiskach polonijnych odegrało znaczącą rolę w podtrzymywaniu polskości i świadomości narodowej oraz w zachowaniu więzi rodaków z krajem w przeszłości i w czasach nam współczesnych.
The paper presents The Dictionary of Polish Book Professionals (editions: 1972, 1986, 2000, 2010 and 2016) as a main source of biographies of people engaged in the history of Polish book abroad since 15th to 21st century. The author pointed out Polish communities all over the world: from Brasil, through west and south European countries, to the north edge of the tsars’ country, latter Soviet Union. The analysis of the Dictionary’s content proves, that creators of the Polish book institutions abroad and their workers – 170 persons in total – represent all professions related to production, collection and distribution of books. People and institutions of Polish book working within Polish communities abroad influenced significantly maintenance of the Polish culture and national awareness, as well as the Poles’ connections with the country today and in the past.

W artykule zaprezentowano wydawnictwo z zakresu biografistyki księgoznawczej pt. Słownik pracowników książki polskiej, realizowane w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim – najpierw w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Łodzi (od 1958 r.), następnie – w Katedrze Bibliotekoznawstwa i Informacji Naukowej UŁ (od 1992 r.). W latach 1972-2016 ukazał się tom podstawowy Słownika (1972) i cztery suplementy (1986, 2000, 2010, 2016). Redaktorami naukowymi były kolejno: I. Treichel, H. Tadeusiewicz, M. Rzadkowolska. Planowany piąty suplement poprowadzi A. Walczak-Niewiadomska. Edytorem Słownika było Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe (tomy z 1972 i z 1986 r.) i Stowarzyszenie Bibliotekarzy Polskich (tomy z 2000, 2010 i 2016 r.). Autorka omówiła także zakres tematyczny i zasięg chronologiczny Słownika, jego warsztat (publikacje towarzyszące, kartoteki, archiwum); podała ogólna liczbę haseł (4842) i autorów (1100), podkreśliła znaczenie wydawnictwa dla biografistyki księgoznawczej oraz dziejów książki w Polsce.
The article presents the dictionary publication from the field of the book studies’ biographies Słownik pracowników książki polskiej (Biographical Dictionary of the Workers of the Polish Book) prepared in the University of Łódź – first in University Library in Łódź (from 1958) then in the Chair of Library and Information Science UŁ (from 1992). In the years 1972-2016 there were published the core volume of the Biographical Dictionary (1972) and 4 supplements (1986, 2000, 2010, 2016). Their scientific editors were – as follows - I. Treichel, H. Tadeusiewicz, M. Rzadkowolska. The next, planned 5th supplement will be edited by A. Walczak-Niewiadomska. The Dictionary was published by the National Scientific Publishers PWN (volumes from 1972 and from 1986) and The Polish Librarian’s Association (volumes from 2000, 2010 and 2016). The author discussed also subject and chronological scope of the Dictionary as well as its additional sources (associating publications, archive, card file); provided readers with number of its entries (4842) and authors (1100), underlined meaning of the publication for the fi eld of book studies’ biographies and for the book history in Poland.

The article is a response to the extensive review by Maria Cubrzyńska-Leonarczyk concerning the first Polish monograph of superexlibris from the Middle Ages to the half of the 17th century, which I published in 2016. Primarily, it contains rectifications of numerous concealments and mistakes that the Reviewer has made in her article. According to the author of the response to the review many of them are the consequence of a doctrinaire and anachronistic interpretation of the notion of superexlibris, which origins from the opinions of Kazimierz Piekarski (1920s – 1930s). Moreover, the author points out a range of interesting and inspiring remarks and discoveries of the Reviewer.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the phenomenon of handwritten notes on the pages of old prints. Due to their astonishing variety, these notes constitute source material with great research potential, well beyond the history of reading and the history of the book as such. Using the previous observations obtained in the autopsy research with the use of the provenance method, the author presents a study of three examples and conclusions regarding the types of writing activity of owners and users of an antique book in the context of their individual approach to the book and reading. The issues were presented based on old prints materials from the collections of the Polish Academy of Sciences of the Gdańsk Library, taking into account the methodological issues related to obtaining provenance information from the collection of old prints, which in the discussed aspect are still insufficiently developed source data resources.

This article describes a collection of rare Polonica, numbering over five hundred books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and prints and engravings, donated to the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in 2001 by Karol Godlewski and his family. The donor’s uncle, Count Emeryk Hutten Czapski (1897–1979), assembled the extraordinary collection. The material includes works written, edited, or translated by Polish authors. The publication dates range from 1505 to the mid-1970s, with two hundred titles predating 1801. The subject matter ranges from texts written by Terence and Plutarch to biographies of Polish kings, details of famous battles, and poetry. There are also etchings of Polish personages, palaces, landscapes, or battle scenes, many of artistic importance

The Society XXVII of the Lovers of Books was acting in Kaunas in 1930-1940. The aim of this society was to develop fondness for a nicely edited books, as well as keeping ties with other bibliophile societies. Most of the Society members were deeply connected of the society there were persons deeply connected with books: editors, graphic designers and known Lithuanian politicians and public figures. Number of members varied from 12 to 23, and the most active were: Vytautas Steponaitis, Viktoras Cimkauskas, Paulius Galaunė, Vaclovas Biržiška, Marija Urbšienė, Petras Jakštas, Vilhelmas Burkevičius, Juozas Balčiūnas-Švaistas and Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas. The society explored the history of Lithuanian book, published two volumes of annual editions „XXVII Knygos Mėgėjų Metraštis” and several books, organized readings, exhibition of books, tours to the exhibitions and libraries, and gathered a reference collection. The Society contributed to the increased love of books in the Lithuanian society.

Negative assessments of the pre-war book situation were used as justification for some of the changes in this field made in 1945-1956. The reference to a deliberately distorted picture of the book’s situation in the Second Polish Republic intensified during the most revolutionary changes in this respect, the essence of which was bureaucratic planning, etatization and control of the processes of its issuing, production, sale and distribution. The problem that requires further research is the answer to the question of how the arguments used in „blackening” the image of book affairs in the Second Polish Republic could be convincing for those to whom they were directed.

Historyk, kartograf, teoretyk księgoznawstwa Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861) swoją bibliotekę prywatną zapisał w testamencie Uniwersytetowi Wileńskiemu. Dział Druków Rzadkich Biblioteki UW przechowuje kolekcję książek i broszur uczonego, liczącą 3684 pozycje (5400 tomów). Jest ona ciekawa ze względu na tematykę oraz zachowane proweniencje. W artykule zostały przedstawione dzieje powstania zbioru i okoliczności włączenia go do Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, a także krótka charakterystyka tematyczna. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono jednak różnym wpisom, pieczęciom i ekslibrisom. Sporą część kolekcji stanowią książki z dziedziny geografii, kosmografii, dziejów antycznych i czasów najnowszych oraz relacje z podróży do różnych krajów. Ważne miejsce zajmują też prace samego historyka. Zachowane na książkach notatki J. Lelewela ukazują go jako badacza o rozległych zainteresowaniach oraz świetnego bibliografa. Natomiast dedykacje potwierdzają, że był on naprawdę znanym i cenionym naukowcem. Proweniencje wielu osób i instytucji z różnych okresów wskazują na to, że J. Lelewelowi nie zależało na nabywaniu wyjątkowych, cennych książek, a zwracał on uwagę przede wszystkim na treść publikacji.
Historian, cartographer, bibliographer, book scientist Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861) devised and bequeathed his private library to the Vilnius University. This collection, preserved in the Rare Book Department of the VU Library, consists of 3684 titles (5400 volumes). Though Lelewel was not a bibliophile, his book collection is interesting and valuable thematically and for the extant provenances in the books. The article reveals the history of its formation and eventual arrival at the Vilnius University, shortly discusses book topics and brings into focus all the different inscriptions, stamps and exlibrises. The majority of books deal with geography, cosmography, Antique, history of modern times, descriptions of travels in different countries. Works of Lelewel himself form a significant part of this collection as well. Lelewel’s own notes in the books themselves reveal that he was not only a researcher interested in a lot of areas of science, but also a great bibliographer. Moreover, the dedications to J. Lelewel paint him as a famous or appreciated scientist who intensively cooperated with the other researchers. The varied persons’ and institutions’ provenances from different times not only provide significant information about the former readers, their reading habits and interests, but also confirm that for Lelewel the content of the books – not the goal to aquire special or exclusive publications – was the most important thing.

Opis:
The article presents the evolution of formal, graphic and typographic solutions, as well as fundamental changes in the content of the ballads included in the collection entitled Powsinogi beskidzkie by Emil Zegadłowicz. A comparative analysis covered the editions from 1923, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1938 and the editions of the works Ballada o Wowrze (1924) and Ballada o Świątkarzu (1928). The results of the research indicate the important role of the editorial tradition in the formation of Zegadłowicz’s book, confirm the author’s interest in old and Modern Art, and indicate a conscious and deliberate resignation from the latest printing achievements in favor of the former printing workshop. Editions of the Powsinogi beskidzkie are in line with the “idea of a beautiful book”. The evolution of the graphic form of subsequent editions largely testifies to the aesthetic changes that took place in the design of the book in the interwar years.

The Days of Culture, Education, Book, and Press (until 1973 – the Days of Education, Book, and Press) in the years 1971-1989 was an annual campaign with goals, agenda, and forms settled by the authorities of the party and the state. Analysis of its program, including anniversaries being celebrated, indicates, that until 1989 they were planned to bring together (adequately interpreted) elements of national tradition and current political goals of the PRP authorities, their ideological, Marxist, „revolutionary” background. Relatively broad acceptance for referring to national past (was it verbal only or actual – to be settled in future research) makes programs of these Days of the 70s and 80s of the 20th century significantly different from those from the Stalinism period. Scale and forms of the events had been evolving, due to social, economic and political changes of that time. The most important and influencing concepts of the Days were: legitimizational concepts of the authorities, activities of political opposition, the „Solidarity” revolution, the martial law, and economic crisis, resulting in difficulties in the book production processes.

The article refers to the troubled history of the Union of Polish Booksellers, one of the most important professional organizations in the history of Polish books. Its establishment in 1908 was a breakthrough in the history of Polish bookselling' organisations. It influenced significantly standarisation of bookselling the time of its functioning (1908-1950). However, it has not received its complete monography so far. This text presents fundamental facts until 1945, to discuss the Union's mission. Apart from stricte professional matters, regarding regulations of trading operations and relations with the publishers, lobbing at state authorities, education and trainings, they referred also to national, cultural, and social obligations of the booksellers. Motivations for these activities came from the confidence of professional elites in a unique significance of a book for Polish matters, as well as from an emotional attitudes towards editions, going well beyond business pragmatics.
