    Opis:
    In this paper prosodic memory is considered to be a collection of all past experiences of speech, sound and rhythm that are activated during the reception of a linguistic text. Although the resources of prosodic memory are accumulated in every person individually, its organisation is influenced by culture, which provides us with repetitive patterns when hearing and seeing words. Prosodic memory is one of the factors that determines the choice of the form of a poem, and transforms the sequence of verses into a melody. From a neuropsychological point of view, it is a priming effect. From a cultural point of view, the connection between a given poem and prosodic memory is created, among others, by the poem’s genre. In the article this phenomenon is discussed using the genre of litany as an example, and subsequently examined in three texts that were published in the interwar period: Claudel’s “Les Litanies de Bernadette,” Eliot’s “Ash-Wednesday” and Liebert’s “Litania do Marii Panny.”

    Opis:
    Elements of folk vocal music can be observed in 20th-century Polish poetry, both in the original forms and in that mediated through imitation. A special role is played by the imitation of versification, whose main purpose is a reference to the melic prototype of folk poetry. An analysis of this imitation is the main topic of the paper. The author discusses the issue based on examples, namely poems by Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, Jan Kasprowicz, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Józef Czechowicz, Jerzy Liebert and Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki.

    This article is composed of two parts. In the first, the Scottish genre of flyting, whose main purpose was to humiliate the opponent, is situated in the context of the Anglo-Saxon cultural and literary tradition. The second offers a stylistic analysis of “The Flyting of Dumbar and Kennedie”, arguing that the poem shows thematic affinity with satiric verse while bearing formal resemblance to litanic verse. “The Flyting” not only displays certain features that are characteristic of the litanic form, but also shares the litanic worldview, with God as the mediator of the poetic agon. Seen from this perspective, the poem’s hostile exchanges of insults do not represent a negation, but merely a reversal of the litanic tradition, and “The Flyting” may be seen as an example of an inverted litany
    Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej, szkocki gatunek pojedynku na słowa (flyting), którego głównym celem było upokorzenie przeciwnika, zostaje umiejscowiony w kontekście anglosaskiej tradycji kulturowej i literackiej. Druga część podejmuje stylistyczną analizę utworu pt. The Flyting of Dumbar and Kennedie, argumentując, że wykazuje on pokrewieństwo tematyczne z satyrą poetycką, jednocześnie zbliżając się pod względem formy do wiersza litanijnego. The Flyting nie tylko wykazuje pewne cechy formalne litanii, lecz podziela także jej obraz świata, z Bogiem jako mediatorem poetyckiego agonu. Widziane z tej perspektywy wrogie wymiany zniewag przedstawione w wierszu nie stanowią zaprzeczenia, a jedynie odwrócenie tradycji litanijnej, co sprawia, że utwór można uznać za przykład litanii na opak.

    Opis:
    Drawing on an analysis of 70,000 verse lines by twelve selected authors, the study attempts to analyze the context in which violations of the metrical norm in 19th-century Czech syllabotonic (i.e. accentual-syllabic) trochee and iamb occur. First, basic information concerning Czech quantity and stress is provided; next, attention is turned to the history of 19th-century Czech verse, especially with regard to the prosodic struggles between the supporters of syllabotonic and quantitative versification. The main aim is to examine whether the violation of a metrical norm may result in compensation for this violation, either by quantity or a prepositional phrase. The study demonstrates that: i) the distribution of long syllables in n-syllable units of 19th-century Czech verse is not accidental, ii) the violation of a metrical norm is compensated for by quantity or a preposition; iii) the preference for a specific compensation type depends on additional factors, e.g. the author’s style or the historical context, i.e. on an overall tolerance for the frequency of violation of the metrical norm.
