    The article concerns the series of texts by Bolesław Prus published in the daily newspaper „Kurier Warszawski” in 1874 as Szkice Warszawskie (The Warsaw Sketches). They represent heterogenic form including the elements of fiction (e.g. short story, novella) and journalistic genres (reportage, featured articles).     After years of treating Doctor John H. Watson as a faithful but not-that-clever friend and chronicler of Sherlock Holmes, recent revisions finally offer a character closer to Doyle’s version. Since each reworking of the great detective calls for a reworking of the diarist doctor, this paper aims to analyse contemporary Watson’s counterparts – literary: Carole Nelson Douglas’s Irene Adler has her Penelope Huxleigh, Neil Gaiman’s consulting detective his “S_ M_,” and cinematic: Gregory House has his James Wilson, and the Whitechapel DI Chandler his Edward Buchan. Each rewriting retains some features of the canonical sidekick through which the new character reflects on the original.

    Opis:
    This article reviews current basic methods of lyrics episation in the context of literary genres and forms evolution. The role of the poetry size accompanied by epic characteristics, such as diff erent descriptions, additional characters and plot elements are discussed. The study analyzes poetry peculiarities caused by narration, in particular, the narrator type and narrative. The author uses the narrator typology, proposed by W. Schmid. The poetry composition peculiarities related to the plot are defi ned. The article reveals the uniqueness of time and spatial relations and the function of descriptions and additional characters in poetry. It also investigates the infl uence of genres characters borrowed from traditional epic on the generic nature of poetry. The correlation of certain poetries with the genres of parables, fairy tales and fables are partially examined.

    This article is devoted to the artistic image of life and the creations of the Ukrainian philosopher H. Skovoroda in I. Sreznevsky’s story. The motivation for the conduct of the protagonist in connection with his philosophy is highlighted. Historicalcultural and comparative methods are applied in the article. I. Sreznevsky offered his own version of the H. Skovoroda’s life and work in his story “Major, Major!” The baroque prototype underwent a romantic transformation. From our standpoint, the image of the philosopher in I. Sreznevsky’s work is far from the psychological truth. However, the author of the story avoided idealizing the hero, much prevalent later, and thus has created a precedent for the controversial interpretation of this figure in Ukrainian literature. The features and interpretations of the figure of the philosopher are presented from the perspective of the specific creative thinking and awareness of the writer of the prototype, given its genre as a romantic story and a prototype belonging to the baroque.

    The article presents the most important formal and thematic characteristics of V. S. Pritchett’s short stories, and attempts to provide an analytical paradigm for what seems to be an original form of social realist short fiction. By analysing themes (crime, above all others), characterisation, eventfulness, and rhetorical closures of selected stories, the author of this article draws attention to the importance of stasis and recalcitrance in the texts, and aims to address the problem of the relative neglect V. S. Pritchett’s short fiction has suffered from in the critical debates of the last few decades.

    Opis:
    The article is devoted to the analysis of the thinking model in the story “Naimyсhka”. It is emphasized on the strong Ukrainian national features of this model and their representation in the ideological and thematic spectrum, the system of images, numerous Ukrainianisms in the Russian language of the work, the description of folk customs, traditions, rites, travel notes introduced into the text. Each factor is analyzed in this paper. It is highlighted the Ukrainian perception of life by the heroes of the story, their expressed national mentality.

    The article deals with the phenomenon of “quality time” in the modern mass culture at the beginning of the 21st century. One of the most notable trends is the use of interactivity in creating cinematic works and computer games. Interactive storytelling allows the spectator/player to choose options for the development of the action and thus independently build the plot of the game film. Such involvement in creating a work of mass culture is an exciting new way to occupy the recipient’s time qualitatively. The variability and artistic potential of interactive cinema are discussed based on the example of one of the most popular computer games of recent years – “Detroit: Become Human” (2018) from the French studio “Quantic Dream”.

    The article deals with the research importance of Oksana Zabuzhko’s works. Particularly, the necessity of studying the works of the contemporary Ukrainian writer in the psychoanalytic sense is proved. An attempt to consider the author’s prose as psychoanalytic narrative is made. Stages of the writer’s evolution from a theorist to a practicalworker, from a researcher to a writer are traced. An attempt to examine Zabuzhko as an experienced analyst is accomplished. The analysis of the novel in the context of Oksana Zabuzhko’s works is envisaged. Its narrative structure and psychoanalytic base are proved. The direct connection between a literary narrative and a psychoanalysis is highlighted with the aim of underlining the feasibility of studying works of the fi ction literature, written in the style of Freud’s disease stories as psychoanalytic narratives. On the basis of the above basis, the expediency of using the psychoanalytic method in researches of the works of modern literature and the urgency of researching the interaction of a narrative and a psychoanalysis in contemporary literary studies are established.

    This paper analizes O. Kobylanska’s story “Vals mèlancolque” as the epicenter of the writers’ refl ections on the category of harmony and happiness. The relationship of O. Kobylanska’s spiritual quest in «Diary» and short prose of the late nineteenth century is observed (“Nature”, “Rose”, “Ignorant”, “Vals mèlancolque”, “Humility”, etc.). The author’s vision of the substantial role of art and words in the story “Vals mèlancolque” is highligted. This paper also investigates the symbolist nature of a text. The writer emphasizes the understanding of the actual idea of women’s emancipation. The paper shows that female characters embody the author’s conscious distinction of such categories as “love” (Martha), “cold art” (Anna) and a harmonious combination of “pieces” and “love” (Sofi a). It is concluded that in the work of Kobylanska the text is a landmark, being both a kind of life and artistic credo.
