Opis:
Excavations by the American–Polish project in Berenike on the Red Sea, co-directed from 2008 by Steven E. Sidebotham (University of Delaware) and Iwona Zych (PCMA University of Warsaw), have aimed at uncovering and reconstructing the ancient landscape of the southwestern embayment, tentatively identified as the harbor of the Hellenistic and early Roman city, and its immediate vicinity. A review of the evidence from the excavation of several trenches in this area paints a picture of the bay—still incomplete—and contributes to a reconstruction of the cultural and economic landscape, the "lived experience" of the town's inhabitants and incoming merchants and sailors during the heyday of "Imperial" Berenike, that is, in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.

Opis:
Archaeological research in Apulia have given solid grounds for a historical characteristic of the region, specifying the nature of settlements and their socio-economic environment in the Roman age. But production centers, primarily pottery workshops, as well as commonly traded shapes, trade routes and consumer centers still are in need of comprehensive study. For this purpose a targeted examination of Apulia et Calabria has been launched, identifying places and modalities of pottery production from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD on the grounds of both permanent installations and mobile finds. This contribution, which takes advantage of the documentation collected within the frame of this research, seeks to identify and contextualize sites where clay oil lamps were being produced, through the scopes of production continuity/discontinuity and the modalities of settlement, craft, economy and commerce.

Opis:
A spatio-temporal analysis of the ancient settlement landscape of northeastern Edom (ancient Gobolitide, Islamic al-Jibal) from Nabataean to Byzantine times was performed based on surface survey data, taking into account various geographical factors (main morphological units, floristic regions, annual precipitation) and climatic fluctuations. The article presents preliminary conclusions concerning the distribution of settlements in the microregion, the determining factors behind the evolution of the settlement network and the temporal changes observed. The mapping of sites based on chronological and typological criteria indicated specific settlement clusters in the Edomite highlands and in episodic river valleys (wadis). The pattern is disturbed only by Wadi al-Hasa. Overall, climate change turns out to have the greatest impact on the change in the number of sites over time.

Opis:
During the 1960s, the Archaeological Survey of Sudanese Nubia (ASSN) created a systematic record of the archaeology of a whole landscape, now lost, providing a body of data of exceptional value. Drawing on still unpublished data this paper explores the medieval settlement archaeology of the Duweishat region of the central Batn al-Hajar. Evidence is examined for a gradual agricultural colonisation during the first millennium AD as well as the penetration of Christianity into this isolated rural area. How social landscapes may have been organised around churches and cemeteries is also discussed, as well as how such regions may have interacted with (episcopal) centres such as Sai and Faras.
