The author claims that consumer culture is nowadays the key factor in the shaping of our society and of course also of educational environments. Therefore it is worth serious consideration and analysis. This article is devoted to the issues of most important features of consumer culture which, according to the author, are fundamental factors in shaping the context in which education takes place. The author includes among them: excessive consumerism understood as granting consumption the primary importance in the individual and social life, growth in importance of the fashion and displacement of custom, radical individualism, culture of hurry and displacement of culture of thought, and treatment of pleasure as the highest value.

Clay exhibits described as firedogs or fire wolves are found all over Europe in the area of influence of the Jastorf and Poieneşti-Lukaševka cultures from the pre-Roman period. Firedogs are found/identified more and more often on the territory of Poland. This paper offers a catalogue of all the 22 finds identified so far. The analysis of decorative motifs found on fire wolves unearthed in Poland indicates greater connections with the Jastorf culture from the Jutland area.

The paper discusses archaeological investigations carried out on all three tells making up the site of Tell el-Farkha, expanding on the findings from earlier seasons. Phasing of the brewery discovered four years ago on the Western Kom gave a time range for the use of the installation from the first Southern Egyptian occupation (Naqada IID) to the Naqada IIIA1/2–IIIB phase, when a catastrophic fire destroyed the entire settlement. The big Naqada warehouse on the Central Kom was also phased (beginning in Naqada IIIA1) and further parts of an underlying building attributed to the Lower Egyptian culture were explored, including a wooden fence around the structure. The 11 graves explored on the Eastern Kom were dated to the Tell el-Farkha Phase 6 (Naqada IIIC2–IIID). They cut into a building (temple?) from an earlier phase.

The archaeological site of Tell el-Farkha is composed of three mounds excavated continuously by the Polish team since 1998. In the 2014 and 2015 seasons, covered in this report, investigations were carried out in already opened trenches in three sectors. On the Western Kom, another brewery was explored to add to the already existing set of investigated installations of this kind. It demonstrated three phases of use, the topmost separated from the middle one by a thick layer of burnt soil and ashes. The deposit attests to a conflagration that consumed the entire settlement. The study of a huge Naqadian building was continued on the Central Kom. Two occupation phases were distinguished: an older one at the beginning of the Naqada IIIA1 period and a younger one attributed to Naqada IIIA1–IIIA2. Remains of Lower Egyptian structures were unearthed below the foundations of this building. A big clay stamp-seal with hieroglyphs from the mid First Dynasty period was found associated with this feature. On the Eastern Kom, a big mud-brick edifice of unknown function was investigated. A further 17 graves, mostly from the second half of the First and the beginning of the Second Dynasty, were discovered as well.

The Tell el-Farkha site, which has been excavated since 1998, is formed of three tells. All three were excavated in the course of the two seasons, reopening already established trenches. Breweries discovered earlier on the Western Kom were explored, two completely, two in the early stages of exploration. Thick poorly preserved mud-brick walls were unearthed northeast of one of the breweries. Remains of a multi-roomed structure continued to be cleared in the northern trench on the Central Kom. D-shaped red bricks in this area suggest the presence of a brewery in the vicinity. A Naqada IIB and IIC settlement was recognized in the southern trench: storage pits, postholes, and furrows from a big house built of wood. A part of a settlement dated to the Tell el-Farkha Phases 3 and 4 (Naqada IID2–mid IIIB) was explored on the Eastern Kom. Of greatest interest is a structure composed of rectangular rooms around an open space, probably a courtyard. Three graves were discovered including one dated to the Naqada IIIB with the first pottery coffin discovered at Tell el-Farkha.

The subject of the article is the reception of Jane Austen in the sphere of e-culture – its fragment connected to websites and discussion forums concerning the writer. The phenomenon of “Austen mania” starts in Poland mainly because of the popularity of the movies based on Jane Austen prose. These sites and forums played not only a popularizing role, spreading the knowledge about the writers’ biography, work, film adaptations, or Regency, but they also grouped the society of fans who felt the need of being close to the other readers of Austen and some virtual companion in a feminine sphere created by numerous, common interpretation of the behaviour of the heroes of her prose, and also fans’ creativity in the area of gadgets, Regency costumes and literary tourism. The other form of activity is fan fiction, slightly represented on the forums and sites, especially in the comparison to fan fiction around the work of Austen in the English-speaking circle. They are most frequently the translations from The Republic of Pemberley, not prepared, unfinished, fragmentated, or personal attempts of a romance kind, in a style of Harlequin literature and a sentimental tone.

The article presents results of excavations carried out at an alleged barrow cemetery located in the western part of the Białowieża Primeval Forest, Poland. The site, discovered in 1996 and verified in 2016, consists of 10 mounds. In 2017, the first excavations were carried out when the mound no. 3, with a diameter of c. 9 m and a relative height of c. 0.7 m, located on the northern edge of the site, was chosen for research. In the mound 39 potsherds were found. The scarcity of ceramic material and the high degree of its fragmentation make the stylistic analysis difficult. The technological and stylistic features of the discussed pottery are typical for ceramics from a wide timespan, ranging from the Pre-Roman Period to the Late Roman Period. Their precise dating and cultural affiliation are difficult to determine due not only to the small size of the collection but also to the lack of well-dated comparative materials from the Białowieża Forest and its surroundings. A 14C analysis of charcoal obtained from the embankment of the mound yielded an approximation which fits between the second half of the 3rd century and the early 6th century. The cul- tural situation of north-eastern Poland in the Pre-Roman and Roman periods remains insufficiently recognised. Excavations carried out over the past dozen years have revealed many settlements related to the local culture group of the Hatched Pottery Culture and the Wielbark Culture, with some influences flowing from the postZarubintsy circle. In the course of the excavations, no human bones were found which would unambiguously confirm the sepulchral function of the mound. The Sacharewo mound is a part of a wider category of objects known from throughout the Białowieża Forest in which no bones were discovered but only fragments of clay vessels or charcoal layers.

The author discusses different uses of the mirror metaphor in philosophy, literature and aesthetics. On one hand, a mirror serves to talk about human empowerment and inner life, while on the other becoming one of the most important metaphors of truth, of proper representation of reality. The final part of the paper considers the practical location of mirrors – and the practice of mirroring as the basis for other philosophical and existential metaphors. The author treats the mirror not only as a metaphor but also as an artefact with its own history: the history of an object but also social and economic history. By taking into account this physical history of mirrors, we can observe the changing foundation of epistemological and aesthetic metaphors.

The paper discusses the news on Polish TV channels. The author argues that the process of selection of information and their aesthetics are governed by laws similar to those that govern every other commodity on the trade market. Together with information, a viewer is sold a full package of ideas, a certain attitude to the world, whose essence is consumerism. An important part of the text provides a detailed analysis of one edition of the evening news station TVN24, which supplied arguments in favour of the thesis presented.

The main purpose of the article is to show the opposition of nature and culture in the perspective of evolutionism in order to explain some repeatedly criticised features of school education such as school programs detached from everyday life, detachment of cognition from action or the necessity to constantly mobilise students to learn. Evolutionism alleviates the opposition of nature and culture by showing specific phases of human evolution. One of the positions presented in the article describes the evolution of man as the successive stages of adaptation to three worlds: physical, social and cultural. We carry the traces of these adaptations in ourselves today and find their influence in school education.

The article is devoted to the problem of human relationships with special attention paid to the experience of helplessness, powerlessness and social anxiety in contacts with other people. The problem is described from the existential-psychological and social-cultural perspective. At first the author presents the essence and reasons for feeling helpless and anxious in the psychological context. Then various aspects of human alienation in contemporary culture are enumerated. In the second part of the article the author discusses the category of usefulness and utility in thinking about oneself and other people, the alienation of language and loss of the so-called “individual initiative”. Theoretical considerations have been supplemented with the results of the author’s own research. At the end of the article the author indicates the role of education in preventing the development of helplessness among young people.
