Although textile craft is a socially complex and economically significant phenomenon, little is known about textile techniques in the Bronze Age of the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, including Estonia. No textile or cloth remains dated to the Bronze Age, i.e. between 1800 and 500 BC in the Estonian context, have been found so far. Only indirect evidence such as possible textile tools and impressions on pottery can be used in the study of textile-making. The aim of the present study is to review the available evidence regarding Bronze Age pottery with patterns commonly described as made with textiles, and to systematise it. As a result, it is suggested that the evidence based on these impressions is even more limited than thought so far. Few finds clearly indicate the use of textiles. Regular patterns consisting of variously-shaped concavities on the vessels’ walls may have been made also with other items, for example by rolling fir cones over the surface of a freshly-modelled pot.

In Islamic Egyptian glazed ceramics there are three ceramic types inspired by Chinese pottery, stoneware and porcelain: sancai pottery, celadon stoneware and Blue and White porcelain. Egyptian imitations of Chinese celadon ware, produced in the 14th and 15th centuries mainly by Cairene potters working at the Fustat workshops, are particularly noteworthy and the Kom el-Dikka site in Alexandria, excavated by the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology University of Warsaw, has yielded a collection of over 300 pieces. The typological analysis was based on 235 distinct fragments of utilitarian wares selected on account of their form, decorative elements, technical quality, possible technological defects and, first and foremost, characteristics that qualify them as imitations of Chinese celadon. Two typological ware groups were distinguished: those inspired by Chinese prototypes and those representing indigenous Egyptian ceramics infused with certain motifs copied from the Chinese celadons.

Vietnamese blue and white ware has recently become an object of scientific scholarly interest. In the beginning, this kind of pottery was overshadowed by Chinese products, but later on it experienced a boom in the 15th and 16th centuries. In this paper, I analyse the development of ceramics on the territory of modern Vietnam, including its shape, decorative motifs and ornament symbolism while focusing on the unique national character of this category of products. Despite strong Chinese influences which are clearly visible in the technological borrowings and symbolism of depictions, Vietnamese pottery shows a skilful mixture of tradition and foreign inspirations. Unlike their Chinese counterparts, Vietnamese painting styles clearly give the Vietnamese pottery of this period a unique, individual form. The blue and white vessels are no longer copies or imitations but local products of high artistic value.

Opis:
In this brief paper a terracotta rhyton in the form of a bull’s head is presented which is exhibited in the museum of Tarsus and probably belongs to the first century B.C. The rhyton, a ceremonial vessel form from earlier periods, was mostly used as a votive vessel in the graves of the Hellenistic period. Archaeological context of this vessel in Tarsus, that has been acquired by the museum in 1973, is not known, but its status of preservation as well as the craftsmanship of its ornaments attracts a special attention.

The report offers an account of archaeological and conservation work carried out at the site. Excavations in the central part of the site (Sector F) were continued for the fourth season in a row. Exploration of remains of early Roman houses led to the discovery of a well preserved multicolored triclinium mosaic floor with a floral and geometric design. A large assemblage of fragments of polychrome marble floor tiles, recorded in the house collapse, showed the scale of importation of decorative stone material from various regions of the Mediterranean. Overlying the early Roman strata was direct evidence of intensive construction work carried out in the vicinity in the form of large-scale kilnworks, supplying lime most probably for the building of the late Roman bath and cistern. Included in the presentation is a brief review of the limited conservation work that was conducted in the complex of late antique auditoria.

The presented pottery collection comes from the excavation of a medieval Islamic cemetery discovered at the Kom el-Dikka site in Alexandria, Egypt. The described set represents only a small fraction of an assemblage consisting of ceramics imported from the world known at the time. Hafsid pottery is easily distinguished thanks to a characteristic palette of colors: brown and blue patterns painted on a creamy-white background. The decoration repertoire can be divided into the following main groups of motifs: zoomorphic, floral, geometric and pseudo-epigraphic. The archaeological evidence is insufficient to support a periodization of this collection; the suggested dating follows from a stylistic analysis of the decoration compared with dated parallels from excavations on the citadel in Tunis and the bacini (bowls) preserved in Italian cathedrals.

The lychnological material from Roman Hispania includes a little-known type of wheel-made oil lamp that has recently been studied for the first time: a form of small dimensions, produced between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Most of the known finds are from Cartagena, hence the idea that the type may have originated from this harbor. The paper reviews the available data on this lamp production and suggests a specific functionality for the type based on some peculiar characteristics.

Part of a lower building was uncovered during the third and fourth seasons of excavation at the site of a church in Selib 1. Finds from the fill between floors confirmed the early dating of the oldest church (6th/7th century). Two buildings were examined in the vicinity of the inner peribolos: BN.13, which proved to be a domestic dwelling from a later phase (11th–12th century), and BS.13, identified as a structure of religious function built before the 9th–10th century.

Для українців сьогодні як ніколи важливо не тільки не втратити незалежність, а й донести свій неповторний національний образ усьому світу, зберегти надбання національної культури. З прадавніх часів через декоративно-ужиткове мистецтво українці передають своїм нащадкам код національної свідомості, засади естетичного смаку. Один з шляхів засвоєння національних традицій – дослідження мистецтва та віддзеркалення національної культури у власній творчості. Мистецтво Прикарпаття славиться гуцульською керамікою та різьбою по дереву, у яких митці розкривають любов до рідної землі та віру як компоненти української ментальності. Проведено стислий огляд творчості народних майстрів та окреслено шляхи реалізації краєзнавчого компоненту у шкільній практиці Прикарпаття.
For Ukrainians today, more than ever, it is important to defend their independence, to convey their unique national image to the whole world, to preserve the heritage of their national culture. Since ancient times, through art, Ukrainians have transmitted the code of national consciousness and culture to their descendants. One of the ways of assimilation of national traditions is the study of art and their reflection in one's own creativity. The art of Prykarpattia is famous for Hutsul ceramics and wood carvings, in which artists reveal their love for their native land and faith as components of the Ukrainian mentality. A brief review of the work of folk artists was conducted and the possibilities for the implementation of the local history component in school practice were outlined.
