Opis:
The state of preservation of Banganarti’s unique medieval mud-brick fortifications and the deposits accumulated against them allows a study of the history of these defenses and their immediate surroundings. Trenches excavated in the northeastern corner of the fortifications in 2016 gave a full cross section, starting with the layers preceding the construction of the defenses, through two phases of the fortifications and ending with traces of secondary use of the ruins.

survey
Opis:
The paper presents the results of an archaeological ground survey aimed to record prehistoric settlement landscape in chosen parts of the Southern Dongola Reach (Tergis, Affad and El-Nafab districts). The project fills in the gaps in earlier research on the right bank of the Nile. Numerous new sites were recorded, all reflecting a frequently occupied level of silts and sands originating in the former river valley aggradations. Prospection of locations recorded in 2003 and later demonstrated also the progressing destruction of archaeological sites on the fringes of modern settlement and the new road from Karima to Nawa.

Opis:
The paper discusses recent fieldwork at the Meroitic settlement site of Selib 2, a town located on the west bank of the Nile between the Third and Fourth Cataracts, investigated by the Banganarti/Selib Polish Archaeological Mission since 2010. The fieldwork was concentrated on uncovering the earliest occupation strata from the 1st/2nd century CE. Two mud-brick buildings were fully excavated, along with contemporaneous occupational horizons, yielding, among others, unique bell-shaped decorated vessels, a copper plate, and a female clay figurine. Storage jars used as ovens and cooking places were present in all phases and can be considered as a characteristic furnishing of the explored households. Moreover, an archaeological reconnaissance extended the boundaries of the settlement eastward, providing new data for studies of the settlement plan and its various stages of development.

Opis:
Over the past seven years, archaeological outreach activities and participatory research have increasingly been incorporated into different archaeological projects in Sudan while sites have faced growing threats from economic activities, mining, and climate change. To respond to such disciplinary shift and challenges in site protection, a training course on collaborative archaeology and heritage management planning was designed and offered to Sudanese archaeologists and students at Old Dongola in early 2021. This article assesses the course based on evaluations submitted by participants and the instructor’s self-reflection and observations. It explores an improved approach to capacity building in the two specialized fields in the context of Sudan, and concludes with the proposition that the approach and objectives of collaborative archaeology should be foregrounded in courses of this kind. Rather than just offering training per se, courses should be set up in collaboration with local communities and produce, by design, meaningful outcomes for communities, while training the participants.

The excavation report covers eight months of fieldwork at the site of Ghazali, which resulted in the clearing of the entire monastery and the discovery of three annexes located on the north and west of the complex. The spiritual part of the monastery included two churches located in the southeastern corner of the complex, a household compound on the west side and a refectory and dormitory in between. Conservation work focused on the reconstruction and restoration of water storage installations in Room Y, as well as north of the North Church. Excavation outside the monastic walls brought the discovery of an iron smelting area with several well-preserved furnaces. Exploration of the monks’ cemetery uncovered regular box superstructures and an intriguing variety of substructures from simple vertical pit tombs to elaborate vaulted chambers.

The Korosko Road is one of the most important desert shortcuts in the Nile Valley, hence its frequent presence in general studies on Nubian history and archaeology. The volume, edited by William Vivian Davies and Derek Anthony Welsby, with contributions by Alfredo Castiglioni, Angelo Castiglioni, Mahmoud Suliman Bashir, Andrea Manzo, Serena Massa, Francesco M. Rega, Philippe Ruffieux and Donatella Usai, has long been awaited, at least by this reviewer, hoping to clear up much of the uncertainties surrounding the Korosko Road until now.

Opis:
An assemblage of 1687 beads and pendants was recovered from the excavation of five tumuli (16, 23, 46, 52, 179) in the cemetery of Tanqasi in Sudan. The assemblage is dominated by faience beads (n=920). The remaining beads and pendants are made of glass (n=422), stone (n=241), ostrich eggshell (n=102), and metal-in-glass (n=2). Morphological estimation based on material, technique of manufacture and shape provides a preliminary overview of types that are encountered at Tanqasi cemetery. In addition to beads made of locally available materials (ostrich eggshell, quartz and faience), glass beads of Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific provenance were found. In general, the assemblage is dated to the period between the late Meroitic and post-Meroitic. A few bead types: small faience, bichrome glass and gold-in-glass, are late Meroitic in date. One stone bead may be Napatan in origin.

Opis:
Archaeological fieldwork in the Kushite temple in Soniyat (Tergis 40) was conducted from 1997 to 2001 with an additional short season in 2013. A team supervised by Bogdan Żurawski returned to the site in 2016 to continue the excavation of the southern section of the complex. Remains of substantial mud-brick architecture were discovered together with large quantities of small finds (potsherds and objects made of metal, stone and faience) and faunal remains. A compact layer of Nile alluvial deposits, about 0.10 m thick, covering the remains represented evidence most probably of a flood. A single stone column was visible at that level. The spatial distribution of the discovered architectural features matches the temple orientation; they can be interpreted as the remains of a pylon with an entrance flanked by columns.

Opis:
The assemblage of faunal remains from Banganarti subjected to archaeozoological examination counted 4178 bones and fragments of bones. They represented contexts recorded within the fortified settlement around the church in Banganarti, attributed to two different chronological phases: 7th–10th century AD (Early Makuria) and 11th–12th century AD (Classic Makuria). Species identified among the 1066 osteological remains from the first phase included mammals, fishes and mollusks. Domestic ruminants dominated this group: sheep/goat (42.77%) and cattle (41.08%); pig was also frequently recorded (12.38%). Bones from the second phase (1513 identified remains) were identified most frequently as cattle (43.75%), sheep/goat (32.78%) and pig (19.69%). Trace remains of donkey, dromedary, dog and bush pig were observed. The analysis gave rise to the first ever characteristic of breeding and meat consumption models for a settlement in the Kingdom of Makuria, outside the capital located at Old Dongola. Beef and pork proved to have a growing importance in consumption patterns in Banganarti over the ages. A study of animal morphology allowed breeds to be established.
