The work is devoted to the comparative presentation of Ugo Foscolo and Cyprian Norwid – two outstanding representatives of the 19th-century Polish and Italian literature, respectively. Despite the obvious differences between them, such as belonging to different literary generations and the ideological and national entanglements of their lives and work, significant similarities between the artists (in the aspect of their works, biographical models and a similar individual stigma) are thought-provoking. Moreover, the ambiguity of assigning Norwid and Foscolo to one literary period still inspires polemics among literature researchers.

The article discusses the dispute of Romantics with Classicists, however, it does not raise literary or ideological issues around which the discussion was held, but selected elements of Romantic rhetoric. The analysis comprises the image of Classicists and Classicist art emerging from the texts of their critics. Special attention has been paid to the use of the word “dead” and related words. It seems that this word is a kind of a key – tracing its meanings, contexts of use and attributed to it value judgment allows to recreate main postulates of the new trend in art, as well as pay attention to creating the image of the opponent, which takes place in the texts discussed. Finally, it becomes the starting point for indicating elements of similar rhetoric in contemporary literary polemics.

The author discusses the history of Xavier Forneret’s (1809–1884) reception focusing on the trend which portrayed the Romantic as a surrealist and a precursor of vers libre. At the heart of the considerations there is the volume Vapeurs, ni vers, ni prose (1838) regarded as exceptional in both the publishing format and the content. The author, however, argues that the poet’s innovation can also be seen in his presentation of typically romantic themes: love, death, poetic vocation, as well as oneiric poetics. The last part of the article is a comparative analysis of the Forneret’s poem “Elle” and Cyprian Norwid’s poem “Polka” [Polish Woman], which allows showing both romantic anticipations and traditional forms of poetic description of a woman.

In this article the hereditary connection between Taras Shevchenko and Ivan Franko’s creative work is studied in Ukrainian literary tradition discourse. Through the prism of Franko’s literary and critical reception of T. Shevchenko’s creative work the causes of coincidences and differences in the ideas and aesthetic conceptions of both writers are determined. The author of the article proves the existance of the indissoluble connection between the different literature generations’ representatives on the idea and content levels, as well as on the formal and aesthetic level. The importance of T. Shevchenko and I. Franko’s creative heritage for Ukrainian culture and literature is also evaluated.

My purpose in what follows is to use ‘postsecularity’ as a transhistorical concept that underpins a new reading of modern religious history. My understanding of postsecularity is inspired by Jürgen Habermas. The postsecular is thought based on the dialectical conjunction of a farewell to traditional religious orthodoxy and a plea for a heterodox revival of religious intuitions and symbols. My main contention would be that postsecularism thus understood is hardly a new phenomenon and that it is in fact a persistent undercurrent within Western modernity, bringing together such authors as William Blake, Franz Rosenzweig, and Max Weber.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1797 poem “Kubla Khan” begins with the statement that Kubla Khan once caused a pleasure-dome to come into existence by dint of a kingly decree. The last line states that the narrator, should he gain suffi cient poetic vision, would have “drunk the milk of paradise” and would “build that dome in air.” A new reading may be derived from a focus on precisely what these lines say and what they imply within the perspective of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s work Anti-Oedipus. If the process of the narrator’s gaining poetic insight is set in motion by a conscious decree from Kubla Khan, then an Anti-Oedipal reading considers whether the end result is simply the consequence a powerful individual’s wishes, or else is paradoxically a liberation from those wishes.

This article is devoted to the artistic image of life and the creations of the Ukrainian philosopher H. Skovoroda in I. Sreznevsky’s story. The motivation for the conduct of the protagonist in connection with his philosophy is highlighted. Historicalcultural and comparative methods are applied in the article. I. Sreznevsky offered his own version of the H. Skovoroda’s life and work in his story “Major, Major!” The baroque prototype underwent a romantic transformation. From our standpoint, the image of the philosopher in I. Sreznevsky’s work is far from the psychological truth. However, the author of the story avoided idealizing the hero, much prevalent later, and thus has created a precedent for the controversial interpretation of this figure in Ukrainian literature. The features and interpretations of the figure of the philosopher are presented from the perspective of the specific creative thinking and awareness of the writer of the prototype, given its genre as a romantic story and a prototype belonging to the baroque.

Comparative studies have established that Cyprian Norwid knew about Friedrich Creuzer’s famous work on the symbol and mythology. He must at least have read its first volume, particularly the theoretical part (albeit in a French translation). Reading Creuzer aided him in reinterpreting his own concept of the symbol, presented in his early theoretical writings. His point of departure were Creuzer’s remarks about “mystical” and “divine” symbols. Norwid’s reinterpretation did not remain without consequences for his poetry. Recently several Norwid scholars have drawn attention to a fresh interpretative context: the concept of allegory elaborated by Walter Benjamin. They considered the context to be related to Benjamin’s and Norwid’s perception of the modern city (Paris from the “Passagenwerk”) and also to the motive of ruins. Benjamin presented his concept of the allegory in his famous book Origin of German Tragic Drama. He developed it on the basis of the same considerations about the symbol (focusing in a “totalizing” and “necessary” way on the “mystical now”) and allegory as Norwid once did. Here their paths converge. A precondition, however, for understanding Benjamin’s remarks about the symbol is his PhD thesis The Concept of Art Criticism in German Romanticism that devotes much attention to reflexivity in the oeuvre of Novalis and Fr. Schlegel.This “Romanticism of Jena” and its philosophy of consciousness had also impact on Norwid (though mediated by Mickiewicz’s “Parisian Lectures”). Comparing Norwid and Benjamin in these contexts contributes to defining their (differing) attitude towards the temporality of Being and the Holy.

W polskiej krajowej krytyce literackiej i teatralnej XIX w., dokonującej już pewnych bilansów dorobku romantyzmu, pojęcia „komedii romantycznej” i „romantyzmu w komedii” służyły za środek do porównawczych analiz i historycznoliterackich periodyzacji, choć jednocześnie takie kwestie, jak semantyczna zawartość tych terminów czy granice czasowe określanego nimi zjawiska, nie były precyzowane ani nawet problematyzowane. Podjęta w niniejszym artykule próba rekonstrukcji ówczesnych niewypowiedzianych wyobrażeń o tych znaczeniach i granicach wiedzie w kierunku formuły chronologicznie rozpiętej między „kosmopolityzmem”, przypisywanym wtedy klasycystycznej komedii XVIII w. i zwalczonym rzekomo dopiero w utworach Aleksandra Fredry z początku lat trzydziestych następnego stulecia, a tendencyjnością, uznaną w drugiej połowie XIX w. za atrybut komedii nowoczesnej i odnajdywaną przez krytyków już w komediach Józefa Korzeniowskiego z pierwszej połowy lat czterdziestych.
The notions of both a ‘romantic comedy’ and ‘Romanticism in comedy’ were used in the 19th-century Polish literary and theatre criticism, which at that point had already outlined some accomplishments of Romanticism, as a means of comparative analysis as well as historical and literary periodisation. Curiously enough, such issues as semantic contents and the time frames defining the phenomenon, were not specified or better still problematized at that time. This article attempts to reconstruct the unexpressed insights into the meanings and time frames and as a result leads towards a model stretching chronologically from ‘cosmopolitanism’, which was at that time attributed to the 18th-century classicistic comedy, allegedly eradicated by Aleksander Fredro as late as at the beginning of the 1930s, and tendentiousness, considered to be one of the traits of modern comedy of the second half of the 19th century, and detected by critics as early as in the first half of the 1940s in Józef Korzeniowski’s comedies.

The aim of the article is to present figures of Ukrainian legendary bard Wernyhora and the Ukrainian Steppe as Polish places of memory according to the concept of French historian Pierre Nora. In this concept a place or figure can act as a transmitter of national common values or a center around which visions of the past can be formed. Places of memory (lieux de mémoire) are also special kinds of symbols because of their visual character. In the article I try to highlight this based on (mainly) literature of Polish romanticism. A visual character of both figures and its connection with Polish identity and historical discussions make them vital and important motif of Polish past and imaginary.

The title of Kajetan JaksaMarcinkowski’s work indicates that Rzeki polskie is a descriptive poem, in which the lecture on Polish history is delivered. But as it turns out, both the composition and content of Rzeki polskie are complicated. The narrative is quite chaotic. The poet is posed as a wandering bard, listening to the voice of native soil and singing about history and legends. Marcinkowski’s poem can be interpreted as a poetic search for the sources of nationality. Collective history as well as the beliefs of the nation are as if charmed into the soil.
