Opis:
With the Federation of Australia, aspiration for racial homogeneity was firmly established as being fundamental to national identity. Therefore, increasing criticism was directed against Asian employment in the pearl-shelling industry of Broome. It was not least against the backdrop of population politics, that several efforts were implemented to disestablish the purportedly ‘multiracial enclave’ in ‘White Australia.’ These culminated in “the white experiment,” i.e. the introduction of a dozen British men to evince European fitness as pearl divers and initiate the replacement of Asian pearling crews. Embedded in these endeavours were reflections of broader discourses on ‘white supremacy’ and racist discrimination.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present the problem of racially-based prejudice in the USA in the post-Civil Rights Movement era. The article is based on Danzy Senna’s critically acclaimed novel, Caucasia (1998). Being a so-called Movement Child of interracial couple, and growing up in the USA in the 1970s, Senna met with different kinds of biased thinking coming from both sides of the color line. The novel tells the story of a young, biracial girl, Birdie, and reflects Senna’s experiences. The article analyzes the different forms and levels of racial prejudice which Senna depicts in her novel to comment on the pervasiveness of the problem in the USA of the 1970s.

The essay analyzes the Dominican immigration policy during the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina in the Dominican Republic (1930-1961), a policy whose origins are related to the massacre of Haitians in October 1937 and whose purpose was to rebuild his tarnished image before the international public opinion. The European events of the era such as the Spanish Civil War, the persecution of the Jews would contribute to this policy. But despite the “humanitarian” immigration policy of the Dominican dictator and his desire to promote agricultural and industrial development of the Dominican Republic, his policy was pronouncedly racist and xenophobic.

Opis:
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is world-renown for its documen- taries and animations. This article examines how the NFB dealt with one specific topic – the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War Two. By analyzing the films produced by the NFB between 1945 and 2018, this study seeks to understand how and why its narratives of the internment changed dramatically over three-quarters of a century. The study deals with six NFB films: Of Japanese Descent (1945), Enemy Alien (1975), Minoru: Memory of Exile (1992), Freedom Has a Price (1994), Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story (2003), and East of the Rockies (2018). Drawing on the postcolonial concepts of the colonizing gaze and hegemony, as well as poststructuralist concepts of the trace and discourses of power, it probes the evolution of the NFB’s cinematic culture and concludes that the NFB’s film legacy parallels a changing public discourse in Canada on this traumatic historical violation of human rights.

Opis:
Latin American migration to Portugal and Spain is usually facilitated by the historical and cul-tural ties that bind Latin American and Iberian countries. Nevertheless, these bonds might also function as a means of reinforcing power asymmetries and social hierarchies. Based on Decolo-nial Thinking and on theories of Social Psychology, this study is aimed at analyzing the dual role of these ties, both as factors of approximation and as instruments of domination and violence. Therefore, we conducted individual interviews with 23 Latin Americans (from Brazil, Chile and Mexico), aged between 18 and 49 years old, who migrated to Portugal or Spain. Data were ana-lyzed through Thematic Analysis. The results allowed us to discuss: the use of language as an in-strument of domination; the existence of negative stereotypes regarding Latin America(ns) and the process of essentialization of the “Other”; and how Latin Americans are sometimes seen as a preferred type of migrant and at other times as being eternal foreigners. We hope this study serves as an incentive for future reflections on how the different forms of coloniality might still shape present-day intergroup relations among countries with a shared colonial past.
