Opis:
The article concerns the problem of allegory in two Czech historical novels from the beginning and the end of the 60s of the twentieth century: Kladivo na čarodějnice by Václav Kaplický and Tovaryšstvo ježišovo by Jiři Šotola. Both novels are also considered to be important political ‘clearing accounts’ novels. Application of allegory as a method of reception allows us to answer the question about the participation of the reader in the setting up of allegory in the Czech prose of the twentieth century .

Opis:
Grant Morrison’s work has greatly added to the Scottish graphic novel tradition. In this regard, this paper will look at the recent Polish translation of the 25th anniversary edition of one of his iconic and groundbreaking Batman graphic novels, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. A brief description and publishing history of the graphic novel will be provided, followed by an analysis of the quality, style and publishing history of the translation in order to produce a final commentary on how Morrison’s work has been rendered into the Polish language. It is concluded the translation is largely faithful to its original although it is marred with a number of careless and confusing errors which ultimately have an impact on the reading experience.

The article compares the two versions of the novel Sotnikau written by leading Belarusian writer Wasyl Bykau. This novel was published in the Belorussian magazine „Połymia” (1970/11). First, author’s version, which was titled Lequidation, changed significantly by the censorship – it has been done about a hundred cuts and abbrevioations. The novel received another title – Sotnikau (the name of main character). As a result the Belarusian censors changed the author’s intentions.

The aim of this paper is to use cognitive approach in order to analyse the topic of religion in two novels by Iain Banks. I argue that in both The Wasp Factory and Consider Phlebas Banks presents divine thoughts as cognitively natural for humans, since, according to neuroscience, the propensity for religiosity is inborn and universal. Banks’s novels show that people have an innate need to fill space with agents, and cannot refrain from ascribing illusory purpose to the cruel chaos of the surrounding world.

Opis:
Western society and its fi ction faces the overwhelming problem of masculinity and its modeling. The era of war, capitalism, the challenges of feminism aff ect the ideology within which men are constructed both as individuals and as a social group. John Fowles’s fi ction tackles the crucial issue of male power and control as masculinity is put to test and trial in his 1965 novel The Magus. The defi nition of manhood, male virility and social respectability of the period shape the 20th century male characters in Fowles’s fi ction. This paper aims to explore how John Fowles investigates the role of masculinity and power myths on the personal level of relationship and a wider scale of war and capitalism in The Magus. Notions of masculinity off er the protagonist, Nicholas Urfe, a sense of a superiority and power over women in the course of the novel. Among the goals of the project is to examine the mythical journey of Nicholas, which becomes a testing ground of his masculinity and maturity, as well his trial and ‘disintoxication,’ which is intended to help him to reevaluate his life and his relationships with women. One of the issues posed is whether Nicholas Urfe is reborn as a new man at the end of his search for redemption or if he remains the same egotistic, ‘lone wolf’ as he appears in the beginning of the novel.

Ukrainian novel of the first decades of the twentieth one century
genre modifications of the modern novel
Opis:
The article outlines the main trends of development of the newest Ukrainian novel, its achievements and genre searches of the last decades. Increased interest of prose writers in historical subjects, documents, biographies has been noted, so the matrix of the historical novel is modified, history is artistically reproduced both as a private destiny of man, and as a hero, and as a trauma and as a game. At the same time, new psycho-biography novels, techno- and psychotriller novels, quotation books, retro-detectives are emerging for Ukrainian literature, and the genre of dystopia is being activated. The boundaries between mass and elitist literature are blurred, postmodern practices of writing are fading away, while realistic, romantic, even sentimental accents in the image of the past and present are intensified.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to consider whether it is appropriate to talk about the writing style of the Central Europe as a separate artistic construction. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, when the former Soviet states became part of the western community, Central European society ceased to exist so that the whole project has become an anachronism. One can see it on the example of Kundera’s post-Cold War novels which definitely do not represent the Central European style. It does not mean, however, that one is unable to find a link between Kundera’s The Joke and Immortality. Features such as anti-essentialism, aphoristic and intellectual style, narrative games, ambiguity and irony are appropriate not only for Kundera, but also for other authors of modern novel – with or without Central European citizenship – like Cervantes, Sterne, Broch, Gombrowicz, K. Brandys, Pamuk, etc.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to describe the definition of a “cultural element” and to provide an analysis of the methods used in the translation of Yurii Andrukhovych’s autobiographical text The Secret. Instead of a Novel. The work was published in 2007 by the publishing house Folio in Kharkiv (Ukraine), and it was translated into the Polish language by Michał Petryk. “Cultural elements” mean here those elements of the text that are a part of the culture of a given country. These include such elements as personal and generic titles, phrases, fragments of texts from a country’s literature, statements by famous people related to the important events that happened in the country. They also include the social, political, scientific, and cultural environment, including music, cinematography, and more. Yurii Andrukhovych outlines many of the details that were characteristic for the USSR and tries not to distort the facts. The Secret is an autobiographical novel; therefore, it contains many reminiscences about the Soviet Union, Ukrainian culture, and literature. An autobiography becomes a kind of time machine for him, an attempt to reconstruct the past. Therefore, he pays a lot of attention to the smaller things and tries to convey the details of the atmosphere of the time described. Because of this, the work is saturated with cultural elements that may cause untranslatability. The cultural elements mentioned in Yurii Andrukhovych’s text and the correlation of translation have not been often analysed in the past scientific studies; hence, this creates a need for scientific research. The scope of this study is limited to the group of literary-political cultural elements. The article analyses the methods chosen by the translator and compares the level of equivalence of the translated text to the original; also, it finds the causes of untranslatability of the novel.

But St. Omer indicates that the only way to overcome such psychological and emotional turmoil is to negate what was taught before and choose a different kind of life.

The aim of this article is to examine the influence of Scottish Enlightenment philosophy on Alasdair Gray’s novel Poor Things (1992) with a particular focus on its references to the natural and life sciences. The essay argues that the novel allegorizes two central themes of the eighteenth-century Science of Man: it stresses the social nature of human beings, and it aims for a comprehensive portrayal of human nature whose different aspects are depicted in explicit connection with one another. The article shows that Gray employs the emancipatory framework of Scottish Enlightenment philosophy in order to communicate an idealistic belief in the possibility of gradual improvement of society.

Can a comic book communicate support to political status quo and strive to educate a society of obedient citizens who share common conservative values? Can it, in other cases, encourage tough questions and sound rebellious? And why are graphic novels so efficient as means of propaganda and ideological impact? Selected stories from “Commando” and “Battle” war comic series are discussed along with Alan Moore’s and David Lloyd’s V for Vendetta in order to look at hierarchical versus anarchistic political communication in British graphic novels. Special attention is paid to uniqueness of comic books as a medium.

Opis:
The paper examines, with reference to Swift’s later novels (The Light of Day, Tomorrow, Wish You Were Here), the function of his consistently employed strategies which, rather than undermine, reinforce the writer’s commitment to realism and give his narratives additional power and depth. His characters are mostly ordinary people, yet their lives are shaped or changed by a larger historical context or by dramatic events beyond their control, and often, beyond their understanding. Swift’s claim that literature brings us into contact with fire, yet we do not get burned, echoes Aristotle’s notion of catharsis. To make this contact with fire possible, Swift selects easily recognizable ordinary areas of shared human experience, which bring the reader close to the protagonist, and simultaneously establish distance by deliberate indeterminacies and refusal to provide disambiguation. A paradoxical coexistence of identification with characters and an underlying sense of suspicion on the part of the reader produce a unique version of contemporary realistic narrative with its ethical and aesthetic commitment.

The article discusses two novels of modern Russian writer Aleksandr Terekhov – Каменный мост (Stone Bridge) and Немцы (Germans). The main aim of the article is trying to find the answer to a question how a book can be riveting and unsavory at the same time. Both books were appreciated by readers and critics and won literary awards – first in 2009 and the second in 2012. Both are very difficult to read because of the author’s specific style – combination of realistic message with modernist stream of consciousness. The writer’s style comprises also a great dose of cynicism and poisonous irony. The first novel is a sort of a journalist’s investigation and concerns the tragic accident from the Stalinist past. The second can be called a pastiche of an occupational novel and a critical look at the corruption in clerical system in Russia.
