Opis:
The Collection of Tunay Demran, officially registered in the Manisa Archaeological Museum, contains seven seals, six of lead and one of silver, and one blank. Manisa, the Byzantine Magnesia Anelios on Mount Sipylos, with its fertile lowland and strategic location in Western Anatolia, has been home to different civilizations over the centuries, including the Lydian Kingdom, one of the most important ancient civilizations. In the 13th century, it became one of the more important cities of the Nicene Empire (established after the Latin invasion in 1204) and the seat of Ioannes III Doukas Vatatzes, who located an actively working mint there. Later on, the city and its environs came under the rule of the Beylik of Saruhan and the Ottoman Empire. There is a rich archaeological record of civil and religious architecture in Manisa and its surroundings, still awaiting full investigation. The article presents Demran’s collection of seals and explores potential ties with the archaeological remains of historical Magnesia.

early Christian church
Opis:
The church discussed in the paper is situated in Avgia, on the outskirts of Batumi. It is an early Christian period hall-type church with northern and southern wings. The ground plan of the whole structure resembles the well-known layout of the croix libre. The whole building is 23.85 m long and 19.0 m wide – including the arms. It has a projecting semi-circular apse whose radius is 6.05 m. The main space of the church is divided into three parts. It consists of a transverse hall, which may have operated as a narthex, a hall, and an altar apse. The floor of the structure was covered with pinkish lime mortar, a mixture of small pebbles and ceramic powder. The only central entrance to the church was located on the west side. The northern annex had an entrance in the north-western corner, and the southern one – in the south-eastern corner. The church seems to have been built of rubble stone. The construction style, layout, and archaeological evidence from the site narrow down its chronology to the 5th and 6th centuries AD.

The ‘Marea’ project of the University of Warsaw expanded the program to survey and excavation in the northern and eastern parts of the city in order to establish the character and chronology of the structures there. The eastern waterfront was uncovered, along with the adjacent latrines, streets and buildings which are presumed to be residential. The structures which were examined were very regularly formed and involved large-scale earthworks. They were built no earlier than the mid-6th century AD, and, although their purpose sometimes changed, they remained in use until about the mid-8th century AD. Accumulations of Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic date were discovered, including the oldest remains this season, that is, a row of locally-manufactured amphorae serving an unexplained purpose.

Opis:
Archaeological excavations in the 2017 season continued the investigation of the early Byzantine and early Islamic House H1 in the northeastern part of ‘Marea’. The building had already been excavated, but required further study to identify the type and function of structures in its immediate vicinity. Five stratigraphic trenches were excavated, exploring a well shaft, one of the wall abutments, a small cell added to the building, a sewer and streets with an accumulation of debris and rubbish. This also enhanced a better view of the house surroundings as well as their development in the course of the 6th century and later. A range of Roman ceramics from layers underlying the house was also discovered in the deepest of the trenches.

The paper is an off-shoot of the author's PhD project on lamps from Roman Syria (at the University of Geneva in Switzerland), centered mainly on the collection preserved at the Art Museum of Princeton University in the United States. One of the outcomes of the research is a review of parallels from archaeological sites and museum collections and despite the incomplete documentation i most cases, much new insight could be gleaned, for the author's doctoral research and for other issues related to lychnological studies. The present paper collects the data on oil lamps from byzantine layers excavated in 1932–1939 at Antioch-on-the-Orontes and at sites in its vicinity (published only in part so far) and considers the finds in their archaeological context.

Seven rooms were unearthed completely and another four in part during the second season of excavations in House H1 in Marea. Thanks to a stratigraphic test pit the approximate date of construction of this part of the ancient town was established tentatively as the 6th century AD; it remained in use until at least the 8th century AD. The building techniques and the plan of House H1 follow the Mediterranean tradition of domestic architecture.

Opis:
The Roman Aqaba Project seeks to reconstruct diachronically the economic history of the ancient port of Aila on the Red Sea (now modern Aqaba in southern Jordan). Excavations of Aila between 1994 and 2003 yielded an enormous quantity of stratified ceramic evidence. This paper focuses on coarse ware cooking vessels recovered from Aila dating to the 1st to early 5th centuries. Although the potters of Aila were influenced by the ceramic traditions of the Nabataean capital at Petra, they also developed an independent ceramic tradition. Further, the Roman annexation of Nabataea in 106 CE, including Aila, seems to have had little impact on the local ceramic industry, which continued with little change until the mid-3rd century, which seems to mark an important transition characterized by the disappearance of many long established types and the appearance of new types, including cooking vessels. Although most of these were produced locally, a significant minority was imported to Aila, mostly from the Petra region about 100 km away. This paper presents a typology of these cooking vessels and offers some explanation for the differing quantities of various types of imported cooking vessels over these centuries, with implications for the regional economy in this period.

A spatio-temporal analysis of the ancient settlement landscape of northeastern Edom (ancient Gobolitide, Islamic al-Jibal) from Nabataean to Byzantine times was performed based on surface survey data, taking into account various geographical factors (main morphological units, floristic regions, annual precipitation) and climatic fluctuations. The article presents preliminary conclusions concerning the distribution of settlements in the microregion, the determining factors behind the evolution of the settlement network and the temporal changes observed. The mapping of sites based on chronological and typological criteria indicated specific settlement clusters in the Edomite highlands and in episodic river valleys (wadis). The pattern is disturbed only by Wadi al-Hasa. Overall, climate change turns out to have the greatest impact on the change in the number of sites over time.

Opis:
: The History by Theophylact Simocatta constitutes a very important source for the history of Byzantine civilization in the last two decades of the sixth century, especially within the context of the appearance of the Avars and Slavs in the Balkans.  Its importance as a source is also to be valued in the aspect of the Persian conflict on the eastern border.  Photius, the Patriarch of Constantinople (cod. 65, ed. Henry) was very strict in his opinion of the allegories present in Simocatta’s prose. The purpose of this paper is to verify the appropriateness of such harsh review by analyzing the presence of allegory in historical narrative in question. The analysis of all allegorical images present in Theophylact’s work has confirmed that the opinion presented by the author of Bibliotheca was indeed proper. Allegories in question prove to be highly conventional, lacking creativity, indistinctive and quite standard for the time. Only the image of Odysseus wandering, which served as allegory of writing, deserves to be called authentic and emotional. Not only are they of middling artistic value, but also they do not provide any help in interpreting the historical events they describe. Moreover, there is one fragment, where the allegory used can be even misleading and cause some misunderstandings of the text. Nevertheless, other rhetorical structures present in Theophylact’s History deserve to be praised, such as the method in which he uses the quotes from the epic. Such quotes are always very smoothly and diligently composed into narrative and designed to strengthen the author’s axiological argumentation, which seems to be a universal standard in Byzantine literature.

This paper discusses glass finds from the Polish excavations at Beit Ras, ancient Capitolias. During two seasons (2015–2016) of fieldwork a relatively large amount of glass fragments was unearthed in the two main excavated areas. The material is from contexts dated to the late Roman through early Islamic periods, spanning a time from the 4th to roughly the 8th century AD. The assemblage includes mainly tableware like bowls, plates, drinking vessels, and also a significant amount of raw-glass chunks. Apart from glass material coming from the excavated squares, a selection of items from the survey in 2014 completes the corpora of glass coming from the ancient settlement.

The excavation of site Bey 004 in the urban center of Beirut was done as part of a major salvage-archaeology operation in the 1990s, in preparation for the redevelopment of the city after the Lebanese Civil War. War destruction had given archaeologists the opportunity to investigate the topography, history and everyday life of Beirut over the millennia since its establishment and before a new city would be built on top of the ruins in the 21st century. Terracotta oil lamps, like tableware, are a sensitive guide to the passage of time and cultures, spanning the ages the 5th century BC through the 9th century AD, from Persia to Islam. The article reviews the assemblage from the Bey 004 site, broken down by a local site typology that reflects major periods of occupation, and relates it to existing typologies of ancient Near Eastern lamps from the Canaanite to the Islamic.

The discussed vessels were made of Nile silt and richly painted on the surface. The article focuses on the decoration of these water containers, presenting a catalogue of motifs: geometrical, vegetal, zoomorphic, human and others. The set is dated to the 6th–7th century AD based on the excavation context and comparative studies of the so-called Coptic painted pottery from Egypt.

The ancient topography of the settlement on the northeastern promontory at ‘Marea’ (North Hawariya) was the subject of investigations carried out at the site in 2018 within the frame of a broader excavation project. Fieldwork established the date of some structures recognized along an ancient road. The oldest remains turned out to be from the Roman period, when the promontory became a rubbish dump for production waste, mostly sherds of Amphores égyptienne 3 and 4, from the nearby pottery kilns. Two superimposed occupation levels were recognised, the earlier one from the beginning of the 3rd century AD or later, the later one from the 5th–6th century. The buildings followed a regular grid that fits into the overall plan of the town. The research has resulted in a better understanding of the changes occurring in this part of ‘Marea’.
