Opis:
The article presents the achievements and thought of chosen pedagogues taking part in the creation of the Polish model of education through art. Janina Mortkowiczowa, the author of the book On aesthetic education (1903), emphasised the issue of the social significance of aesthetic culture and noted its linkage with moral culture. Stefan Szuman set out his main theses in the book On art and aesthetic education (1962), where he pointed out various dimensions of creative activity, including children’s art and its important role in the process of development of the young human being. Bogdan Suchodolski looked at art from the perspective of culture and general education. Irena Wojnar provided the final shape to the theory of aesthetic education (Theory of aesthetic education, 1976), by distinguishing two aspects within it: education towards art and education through art.

Opis:
This article has as its topic the Danish artist Dan Sterup-Hansen (1918–1995) and his paintings and prints on the subject of blind people with canes as well as works related to these. Sterup-Hansen was active as an artist from a young to an old age, but made a significant artistic contribution in the decades following World War II. During this period, he explored a number of themes related to cold war anxiety and the cultural trauma of the World War II. These themes centre on the human body and a phenomenological perception of the world. They are humanitarian in spirit and are related to Sterup-Hansen’s left-wing political views of solidarity, humanism, and advocacy for change and reconstruction after the World War II.

Opis:
Dea Trier Mørch (1941–2001) was a popular – and recently rediscovered – artist often associated with feminism and the formative years of the Danish Women’s Rights movement. Throughout her career, she worked and exhibited frequently in the Eastern Bloc countries, but the details of these activities and the reception of her work in this context is still a little known aspect of her life and work. The article will analyse the case of Trier Mørch as a Danish artist exhibiting in the communist bloc countries. From attending art academies in the 1960s (mainly in Poland and the USSR) to taking part of exhibitions both individually and as part of artist collective Røde Mor such as Biennale der Ostseeländer in Rostock and Intergrafik in East Berlin, the activities of Trier Mørch show encounters and interactions with the other art world of state socialism at various levels, such as conflicts and paradoxes, including on the issue of feminism and women’s rights in the different systems. Following an individual through larger structures like international exchanges and art diplomacy will also shed fresh light on the developments in international cultural relations in the Nordic-Baltic region and provide context for the artist’s commitment and positioning through a formative period in contemporary history.

The most basic understanding of the world has always had an aesthetic character, which also means non-discursive character. For that reason, over the centuries artistic creation constituted a significant instrument in broadening the horizons of human consciousness, and as a result contributed to shaping the entire human culture. Similarly, spontaneous expression of personal experience has presentational forms which can be identifiable, memorised and included in sequential experiences of one’s personal history.

Opis:
Michel Sittow was a disciple of Hans Memling and a follower of the fifteenth-century school of Bruges, who led the art of northern portraiture through the Renaissance. This painter from Reval (currently Tallinn) travelled around Europe, working for the most significant monarchs of that time: Isabella of Castile, Margaret of Austria, Charles V, Christian II Oldenburg and perhaps Henry VIII. Even though studied by multiple researchers from Europe and the US, his oeuvre is still giving rise to many questions for art historians. This study’s aim is to analyse the international historiography of Michel Sittow, starting with the first attributions of his artworks, and comparative studies of German historians who called the painter Michel Sittow and the Spanish school where he was known as Melchior Alemán. In 1940 Paul Johannsen published the document that indicates Michel Sittow’s stay in Spain. The post-war historiography was not interested in Sittow’s life, except in the work of the Latvian origin Belgian researcher Jazeps Trizna, who published the first monograph on his artworks in 1976. He was the first to unify both historiographical personalities the one of Michel Sittow, and the one of Miguel Alemán. Meanwhile in Estonian literature, Sittow’s story appeared as a romantic symbol of independence from the Soviet Union in Jaan Kross’s novel. In the last twenty years, with the development of the radiographic method of artwork analysis, researchers such as Else Kai Sass, Matthias Weniger, Chiyo Ishikawa, and Pilar Silva Maroto have revived many questions about Sittow’s career, style, and globetrotting around European courts. However, the first exhibition that reunited Michel’s artworks, held in 2018 in Washington and Tallinn marking the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Estonian independence, did not solve many of Sittow’s life secrets.

In the article, I discuss the role of plants in Karolina Grzywnowicz’s Grün | Zielony [Green] project and point to their media nature as well as their inseparable connection with the local cultural history and bottom-up practices of memory of the residents of Breslau/ Wrocław. I look at the cultural biography of Wrocław plants from the perspective of cultural and environmental anthropology and analyse the various ways in which they co-create and sustain – due to their material belonging to a specific space and cyclic, heterotemporal rhythms of growing and dying back – the transcultural identity of the city, entering into the relationship both with the everyday experiences of the residents of Wrocław and with the historically changing, social relations of power. In this context, I also discuss the concept of “personal natural monuments” introduced by the artist and I reflect on its accuracy.

The text offers an analysis of selected works by Władysław Hasior from an ecocritical perspective. The focus is placed on Hasior’s best-known work, The Organ, as well as on several parts of his Photo Notebook. The analysis seeks to demonstrate that an application of an ecocritical perspective to the reading of Hasior’s work may help fill in the blanks in the environmental history of art in Poland. Several recent publications and exhibitions that concern the relationship between art and nature focus on uncovering the “prehistory” of ecological art in Poland or the local tradition of Land Art. The text is meant as a preliminary study of possible research perspectives that the proposed reading may open up, as well as a consideration of whether ecocriticism could serve as an opportunity to bring the tenets of horizontal art history into the practice of rereading the work of Polish artists and their relationship with the landscape.

The polish conception of aesthetic education began in the 1960s. The grounds of this theory were formulated by Bogdan Suchodolski, who recognised it as an integral part of general education. According to this theory, aesthetic education encompasses two areas: education for art, i.e. education for aesthetic sensibility and aesthetic culture, and education through art, i.e. development of full personality, also in the intellectual, moral, social, educational, imaginative and creative areas. Essential for the Polish theory of aesthetic education are the proposals and conclusions presented by Irena Wojnar, particularly her recognition of education through art as a creating an “open mind” attitude. A distinctive feature of Irena Wojnar’s pedagogical reflection on art is its interdisciplinary nature, which takes into account not only the educational one, but also the aesthetic, psychological and social perspective on the educational values and functions of art. The conceptions of visual art and musical education developed within the “general” theory of aesthetic education have been used in designing the music and visual arts curricula. The contemporary Polish theory of aesthetic education joined the stream of new educational thinking, in the perspective of cultural pluralism and new ethical and social obligations to individuals and to the world. The so perceived aesthetic education, recognised by UNESCO as an important part of education for culture, including the so-called human culture, deserves both the attention and interest of theorists as well as innovative practical solutions.

The article focuses on the attempts of constructing and presenting the canon of Polish modern and contemporary art in the West after World War II. Initially, the leading role was played by Colourists – painters representing the tradition of Post-Impressionism. After 1956 the focus shifted towards artists who drew in their practice on tachisme and informel. However, the most enduring effects brought the consistent promotion of the interwar Polish Constructivism and its postwar followers. The article discusses the subsequent stages of this process, from the famous exhibition at the Paris Galerie Denise René in 1957, through exhibitions such as Peinture moderne polonaise. Sources et recherches (Modern Polish Painting. Sources and Experiments) from the late 1960s, up to the monumental Présences polonaises (Polish Presences) from 1983 (both in Paris), showing that these efforts contributed to securing a permanent position of Polish Constructivism within the global heritage of 20th-century art.

The article explores the issue of education “for film”, which can be understood not as a preparation for its reception or as the value of the learning after seeing the film, but as the impact of both the mutual film – viewer and viewer – film interaction and the benefits that take place while watching, together with their subsequent consequences. Education “for film” changes the approach to cinematography and analysis. Education of the look is an important element of education “for film”. The author discusses the changes in the perception of film, anthropological–morphological analysis, neoformalism and the issue of education “for film” and draws attention to the important role of “education of the look”. Education “for film” will make people appreciate the works of the film art, in which the audience will find knowledge, life inspiration and creative joy. Filmmakers are brave, ambitious, ingenious and creative mavericks, and they still have so much to “say” and to “show”, while viewers have a lot to read, to interpret and to understand.
