    The election of the head of state in Austria in 2016 was in many ways a breakthrough and its course was surprising. Norbert Hofer, a right-wing populist candidate of the Freedom Party of Austria, made it to the second round of presidential election. Technical problems related to the organisation of the presidential election postponed the final decision until December 2016. The aim of this article is to present the main elements of the populist narrative propagated by the FPÖ during the election campaign. The party reached for a well-known arsenal of means, trying to convince voters to their candidate. It underlined the protection of national identity, the defence of the interests of Austria in the European Union, declarations of strengthening the position of president and the inclusion of the people in the governing through direct democracy. The populist rhetoric recurred as well to its permanent elements: criticism of the establishment and the conspiracy theory of the Austrian elite aiming to prevent or postpone the victory of a FPÖ candidate.

    Este artigo destaca a expressão cultural e política de indivíduos e grupos sociais procedentes da área da Polônia sob domínio da Áustria junto a outros imigrantes poloneses no Brasil, entre o final do século XIX e as primeiras décadas do século XX. A ação social de grupos incentivadores de uma identidade polonesa, constrangida na Europa e reativada no Brasil, é interpretada em termos dos condici-onantes históricos do período.
    This article highlights political and cultural expression of individual and social groups coming from Poland's regions under Austria’s domination, along with other Polish immigrants in Brazil, between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. Social actions of groups encouraging Polish identity, constrained in Europe and aroused in Brazil are seen according to the historical conditioning of that period.

    In recent years the public debate in Europe has been dominated by the topic of refugee crisis. Disputes on its solving have become a part of public life in practically all European countries. Intergovernmental organisations, like the European Union for example, are also interested in this problem. Austria is one of the countries that directly experienced the influx of migrants. In the context of these events, it is worth considering three issues. First of all, is it possible to continue the existing assumptions in the time of the migration crisis? The second is the question of specific challenges for the “integration package” implemented in Austria. The article also attempts to answer the questions: what is the main costs of integration and what is the opinion about this costs? The economic factor has been discussed from several perspectives – the cause, the effect and the kind of challenge for Austria’s integration policy. W ostatnich latach dyskusję publiczną na kontynencie europejskim zdominował temat kryzysu uchodźczego. Spory dotyczące sposobów jego rozwiązania stały się ważnym elementem debaty w większości państw Europy oraz przedmiotem zainteresowania organizacji międzyrządowych, w tym przede wszystkim instytucji Unii Europejskiej. Jednym z państw, które w sposób bezpośredni doświadczyły wzmożonego napływu migrantów stała się Austria. W tym kontekście warto zastanowić się nad trzema kwestiami. Po pierwsze – czy w dobie kryzysu migracyjnego możliwe jest kontynuowanie dotychczasowych założeń polityki migracyjnej i integracyjnej? Drugi problem badawczy stanowią szczególne wyzwania dla realizowanego w Austrii „pakietu integracyjnego”. W artykule podjęto również próbę odpowiedzi na pytania o główne koszty integracji i o to, jaki jest poziom akceptacji społecznej dla ich ponoszenia. Tytułowy czynnik ekonomiczny został omówiony z kilku perspektyw – jako przyczyna, skutek oraz swoistego rodzaju wyzwanie dla polityki integracyjnej Austrii.

    The aim of this paper is to present the development of the legal concept of good faith in European legal tradition by means of claim in case of building on someone else’s land – art. 231 § 1 of Polish Civil Code. This claim pretends to be an exception to the superficies solo cedit – rule, offering some possibility to avoid its strict results. The paper takes particularly Polish and Austrian regulations into consideration. The author describes the history of meaning of good faith from roman law until today. He indicates the Germanic origins of the claim from art. 231 § 1 and the influences of Austrian Civil Code (ABGB) § 418. The paper contains a review of statements of doctrine and Polish Supreme Court in 20th century. The described example is also a model of application of historic-comparative method in legal sciences.

    This work deals with the problem of the self-identity of the inhabitants of Central and Eastern Europe, and their self-determination in relation to the Austria-Hungary. An important element of this issue is the mythologization of history, also cultural memory about the past that can be shown through the certain fragment of the anthropology of everyday life-cuisine and culinary culture. The Austro-Hungarian myth fixed in culture through cuisine becomes the material of regional identity. The paper contains main conclusions of the master thesis On the search of self-identity in Central and Eastern Europe. The role of cuisine in the construction of Austro-Hungarian myth.

    Artykuł przedstawia krytyczną analizę teorii geopolitycznego rozumienia Europy Środkowej weryfikowaną na podstawie współczesnej sytuacji i popartą danymi empirycznymi. Główne pytanie badawcze brzmi: czy w obecnej sytuacji można nadal mówić o Europie Środkowej jako regionie geopolitycznym? W artykule przyjrzymy się trzem tradycyjnym koncepcjom geopolitycznym Europy Środkowej z perspektywy obecnej roli Niemiec jako tradycyjnego czynnika komunikacyjnego tego regionu. Najpierw przeanalizowano koncepcję Mitteleuropy. Następnie dokonano analizy z perspektywy koncepcji Wyszehradu, spuścizny Austro-Węgier i ostatecznie CENTROPE. Analiza opiera się głównie na danych empirycznych pochodzących z oficjalnych dokumentów publikowanych przez instytucje UE lub przez oficjalne krajowe urzędy statystyczne z państw Europy Środkowej. Przyjęta metoda badawcza to połączenie historycznego, polityczno-geograficznego i społeczno-lingwistycznego podejścia do tematu. Koncepcja Europy Środkowej ze swoim centrum w krajach niemieckojęzycznych może być obecnie bardzo istotna gospodarczo i politycznie z perspektywy paneuropejskiej, ale niemiecka dominacja językowa nie występuje na żadnym obszarze sąsiadującym z tymi krajami. Ponadto Grupa Wyszehradzka nie obejmuje dziś wszystkich regionów i państw, a język niemiecki nie jest uważany za główny język komunikacji.
    The article presents a critical analysis of the theory of geopolitical understanding of Central Europe, basing on the evaluation of region’s contemporary situation and supported by the empirical data. The main research question is the following: is it possible in recent situation to still speak of Central Europe as a geopolitical region? The article is focused on the three traditional geopolitical concepts of Central Europe considered from the perspective of the current role of Germany as a traditional communication factor in this region. First, the idea of Mitteleuropa is analysed. Then, the perspectives of the Visegrad, concept of Austria-Hungary legacy and finaly CENTROPE are closely viewed. Analysis is mostly based on empirical data available in the official documents published by EU institutions as well as official national statistical data of Central European countries. Adopted research method is a combination of historical, political geography and social linguistics approaches to the topic. The concept of Central Europe with its centre in the German-speaking countries may be currently economically and politically significant, especially from a pan-European perspective, however German linguistic hegemony is not present in any of the neighbouring countries. Furthermore, the Visegrad Group today does not include all regions and states and German is not considered there as the main language of communication.
