    The article offers an overview of wall inscriptions from the Southwest Annex to the Monastery on Kom H at Dongola documented in the 2013 season. The collection consists of 49 items. They can be divided into two categories: integral elements of the original decoration of the Annex and elements that were introduced when the Annex was in use, mostly by lay visitors. The two categories are described and the most interesting items are presented in greater detail. Information derived from the inscriptions is discussed in the context of Christian Nubian culture.

    A well established program can be observed in the decoration of the northern pastophoria of Nubian churches from the 9th/10th century onwards. It consisted of a painted representation of Jesus Christ blessing with his right hand the chalice held in his left and inscriptions in Greek with prayers from the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. The authors argue that this program was a Nubian creation, alluding to the function of the northern pastophorium as a place for storing oblations, keeping liturgical implements and liturgical reserve, and possibly also celebrating the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.

    Seven LR 5/6 amphora sherds from Polish excavations in the building B.I on the citadel of Dongola published in the present article are thought to represent pottery production from the northwestern part of the Nile Delta. Their principal content was wine in all probability and they all came from 7th century contexts. These particular seven pieces all carried dipinti in black reading: “To the Four + a number”, which apparently indicates that the Church of Four Living Creatures was the recipient of the wine contained in these vessels. Assuming the interpretation is correct, the finds cast light on the organization of Egyptian wine exports to Makuria in the 7th century.

    The Polish Center of Mediterranean Archaeology University of Warsaw mission to Old Dongola has been excavating the site for over 50 years. This volume is a second comprehensive report on fieldwork and conservation conducted in 2015–2016 by a team led by Włodzimierz Godlewski. The contributions report on the work of recent seasons and present in-depth studies on the site’s urban development, architecture and building techniques. The volume also includes results of the most recent specialized research on material brought to light during these and earlier campaigns. The discussed categories of find include inscriptions, ostraka, pottery, animal bones, and textiles. The royal city of Old Dongola was the political and economic center of Makuria, a medieval Christian kingdom. It flourished from the 5th/6th century, when the royal complex on the Citadel was built and enclosed within massive stone fortifications. Over the centuries, other representative buildings were founded, among them the imposing Throne Hall later converted into a mosque that still towers over the site today. Equally impressive are the religious complexes unearthed in Dongola. The Makurian capital’s churches and monastic buildings boast stunning mural paintings and inscriptions that shed light on local religious practice, while their architectural design testifies to the skills of local builders. After the royal court abandoned Dongola in 1364, the city remained an important urban center, as indicated by the extensive residential quarters functioning on and around the Citadel for several centuries. The city, still a vital node in the long-distance trade network, was inhabited by a lively community, which cultivated old traditions and embraced new trends. The wealth of archaeological finds recovered on the site in the seasons under consideration contributes new data to studies on the history of Dongola , as well as the culture, art., architecture and economy of the kingdom of Makuria.
    Misja Centrum Archeologii Śródziemnomorskiej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego prowadzi badania w Starej Dongoli od ponad 50 lat. Niniejszy tom to drugi kompleksowy raport dotyczący prac archeologicznych i konserwatorskich prowadzonych w latach 2015–2016 przez zespół pod kierunkiem Włodzimierza Godlewskiego. Poszczególne teksty omawiają działania podejmowane w ostatnich sezonach oraz prezentują pogłębioną analizę rozwoju urbanistycznego, architektury i technik budowlanych Starej Dongoli. Tom zawiera również wyniki najnowszych specjalistycznych badań materiału odkrytego podczas tych i wcześniejszych kampanii. Omawiane kategorie znalezisk obejmują inskrypcje, ostraka, ceramikę, kości zwierzęce i tkaniny. Królewskie miasto Stara Dongola było politycznym i ekonomicznym centrum średniowiecznego chrześcijańskiego królestwa Makurii. Jego rozkwit rozpoczął się w V–VI wieku, kiedy wzniesiono królewski kompleks na Cytadeli i otoczono go potężnymi kamiennymi fortyfikacjami. Na przestrzeni wieków powstały inne reprezentacyjne budowle, m.in. imponująca Sala Tronowa, później zamieniona w meczet, który dziś wciąż góruje nad stanowiskiem. Równie imponujące są odkryte w Dongoli kompleksy o charakterze religijnym. Kościoły i budowle klasztorne stolicy Makurii szczycą się fantastycznymi malowidłami ściennymi i inskrypcjami, które rzucają światło na lokalne praktyki religijne, ich architektura świadczy zaś o wysokich umiejętnościach lokalnych budowniczych. Po tym, jak dwór królewski opuścił Dongolę w 1364 roku, miasto pozostało ważnym centrum miejskim, na co wskazują rozległe kwartały mieszkalne funkcjonujące przez kilka stuleci na terenie Cytadeli i wokół niej. Miasto wciąż było ważnym węzłem na skrzyżowaniu szlaków handlowych łączących odległe regiony, zamieszkiwała je aktywna społeczność, która kultywowała dawne tradycje, ale też przyjmowała nowe trendy. Bogate znaleziska archeologiczne pozyskane ze stanowiska w omawianych sezonach dostarczają nowych danych do badań nad historią Dongoli, jak również kulturą, sztuką, architekturą i gospodarką królestwa Makurii.

    The volume brings together 36 fully peer-reviewed contributions in the field of Christian Egypt and Nubia studies, mirroring a lifetime of academic achievement by Prof. Włodzimierz Godlewski, in whose honor this jubilee book has been produced. The contributing scholars are both colleagues and associates, and the subjects they take up in their studies are focused on issues of archaeology, epigraphy, iconography, ceramics and material culture, as well as history of medieval and post-medieval Egypt and Nubia. In several cases, the articles concern material from two sites, Naqlun in Egypt and Dongola in Nubia, where Godlewski has conducted and directed research. Thus, for Naqlun we have the functionaries of the Nekloni monastery (T. Derda and J. Wegner), literary culture (A. Delattre and N. Vanthieghem, J. van der Vliet) as well as ceramics (T. Górecki) and glass vessels (M. Mossakowska-Gaubert), and architecture of the monastic complex from Naqlun (S. Maślak). For Old Dongola there is a study of Egyptian amphorae with dipinti (K. Danys and A. Łajtar) and costume of monks in wall paintings (K. Innemée). Broader studies concern issues like the functioning of a pilgrimage sanctuary in Egypt in late antiquity (E. Wipszycka), wine consumption and usage in Egypt’s monastic communities in the 6th–8th century (D. Dzierzbicka), aspects of the role of Archangel Raphael in Christian Nubia (M. Łaptaś), observations on the origins of “apse portraits” in Nubian royal iconography (M. Woźniak), the ideology and function of the northern pastophorium of Nubian churches based on inscriptions and paintings (A. Łajtar and D. Zielińska). Church architecture is taken up by P. Grossmann for Egypt and Nubia, and A. Obłuski for Nubia. W. Y. Adams gives an overview of evolution and revolution in Nubian pottery, J. R. Anderson and A. Harrison present unique hair textiles from British Museum excavations in Kulubnarti, while A. Boud’hors and E. Garel discuss what remains of the monastery library in Deir el-Bahari (a monograph of which was published by Godlewski early in his academic career). The history of Baybars’ Nubian conquests is taken up by R. Seignobos. Contributions have been offered also by Nettie Adams, M. Barwik, D. Edwards, K. Grzymski, B. Lichocka, A. Łukaszewicz, G.     Tom dedykowany prof. Włodzimierzowi Godlewskiemu obejmuje 36 tekstów bliskich tematyce badań jubilata: chrześcijańskiej Nubii oraz czasom późnego Bizancjum w Egipcie. Autorzy – koledzy i współpracownicy profesora – podejmują zagadnienia archeologiczne, epigraficzne, dotyczące ceramiki i kultury materialnej, jak również historii Egiptu i Nubii w średniowieczu i później. Kilka tekstów odnosi się do dwóch stanowisk: Naqlun w Egipcie i Dongoli w Nubii, gdzie profesor Godlewski prowadził badania. Inne studia dotyczą m.in. takich kwestii, jak: funkcjonowanie sanktuarium pielgrzymkowego w Egipcie w późnej starożytności, spożycie i zużycie wina w egipskich wspólnotach monastycznych w VI–VIII wieku, rola postaci archanioła Rafała w chrześcijańskiej Nubii, pochodzenie „portretów apsydowych” w nubijskiej ikonografii monarszej, ideologia i funkcja północnego pastoforium w kościołach nubijskich na podstawie inskrypcji i malowideł, architektura sakralna w Egipcie i Nubii, ewolucja i rewolucja w ceramice nubijskiej, unikalne tkaniny z włosów odkryte podczas wykopalisk British Museum w Kulubnarti czy pozostałości biblioteki klasztornej w Deir el-Bahari (której monografię profesor Godlewski opublikował na początku swojej kariery naukowej).

    The paper presents a selection of cooking ware pottery excavated in 2014 and 2016 from the fill under the central and eastern parts of the main courtyard (1) of the “Hellenistic” House in Nea Paphos–Maloutena. Most of the studied vessels are of early Roman date and, for the most part, Cypriot production, although there is a spattering of imports from the Aegean, Italy, the Levant and Egypt.
