Opis:
Lilac has been the symbol of Russian gardens for ages, gradually becoming their inseparable attribute. The Russian word ‘’ (lilac) is derived from Greek ‘syrinx’ meaning a pipe (musical instrument). This name has also its own mythic explanation of double i.e. Greek and Scandinavian origin. Since the 19th century lilac has been attracting attention of many Russian poets and painters, becoming the source of their inspiration. The most eminent painter of lilac is Mikhail Vrubel, whose “portraits” of lilac: Lilac bush () , 1900) and Lilac (, 1900 and 1901) are magical, ambiguous and  stunning with their enchanting, iridescent colours and the atmosphere of mystery. Vrubel gives his paintings a profound philosophical meaning playing with the ambivalence of his subject. This subject is the transformation of Chaos into Cosmos. The same attitude can be observed in the poems of A. Blok, K. Balmont, I. Annenski. In each of the iconic representations of lilac analysed by the author of this article, lilac obtains the status of a symbol as an artistic sign with a complex semantic structure and definite, melancholically sensual emotional quality. In this way lilac becomes an iconic announcement with a multi-level structure for Russian symbolists. The process of perception of poetry and paintings becomes the way a realibus ad realiora, from matter to feeling. It leads to the conclusion that Russian artists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries saw in lilac the sign of a higher, better world, where all its elements (real, mystic, mythic and fantastic) coexist, the sign of yearning for the idea of harmony.

Opis:
The article explores a need to provide a permanent revision of the ways of reading classical texts. The fairy drama The Forest Song was written by Lesya Ukrainka, who is acclaimed as an outstanding dramatist of Ukrainian literature. This play has a vast bibliography and serves as a target of a variety of critical approaches. The point is, however, that the predominant position among them still belongs to the interpretative models generated by Lesya Ukrainka’s contemporaries. This refers, first of all, to those who have hitherto interpreted The Forest Song within the following two frameworks: neoromantic, grounded in Polissyan folklore and the author’s mythology, and neoclassical, launched by neoclassicists of the 1920s and based on the ties of Lesya Ukrainka’s play with classical drama. The scholars overlook, though, a conflict between the two interpretations. Each model, employed with no regard for the other one, operates on certain elements of the text. The scholars neglect the need to correlate their work with the other, totally inverse, model (neoromanticism and neoclassicism are, at a fundamental level, as aesthetically opposed to each other as are romanticism and classicism). The article offers a new model for reading the text of Lesya Ukrainka through the lens of symbolism. This model allows us to account for the congruence of classical normativity and romantic liberty within a single text.

In 2001, a Texan housewife, Andrea Yates, drowned her five children in a bathtub, claiming that she had killed them to save them from evil. Her life sentence for murder was later suspended, and Yates was transferred to a psychiatric facility. In 2009, Joyce Carol Oates published the short story “Dear Husband,” inspired by the Yates case. The author structured her story as a letter which Lauri Lynn writes to her husband to confess to the murder of their five children before she takes her life. The aim of this article is to analyze the story using the categories elaborated by Paul Ricoeur to define evil and its symbolism and to try to answer the question: is Andrea Yates/Lauri Lynn a villain or a victim?

Opis:
The article is devoted to an artistic and historical study of a marble relief with a symbolic scene of Nero’s victory over Armenia from the Sebasteion sanctuary complex in the ancient town of Aphrodisias in Asia Minor. The temple complex was dedicated to the cult of the Julio-Claudian imperial dynasty. The artistic and stylistic analysis of the relief was performed in the context of the sculptural program and decoration of the whole complex, and took into consideration other images of Nero in the Sebasteion. Through a comparative analysis of the figure personifying Armenia depicted on the marble relief in Aphrodisias, as well as a series of images on coins and small statuary samples, characteristic iconographic traits of Armenia in the Roman imperial art were revealed. Along with this, the paper presents an in-depth ‘reading’ of this scene within the context of specific epi- sodes from the history of the Parthian-Roman conflict and the Roman struggle for Armenia during the period of 54–68 AD.

Opis:
The opposition of symbol and allegory in the Romantic aesthetic-philosophical discourse can be considered as a special case of the fundamental antithesis, emphasized by Tzvetan Todorov, of symbolic representations and sign representations. On the other hand, the literary practice of Romanticism by no means renounces allegorical renderings. Before Norwid’s connections with Counter-Reformation emblematics finally reach a competent description, even a single example seems worth presenting. Even if a strict equivalent of intersemioticality, which appears in emblems, does not exist in the case in question (all we have is verbal text), a good equivalent of emblematic icon can be found on the level of poetic imaging, while the homologue of the inscriptio emerges as a figure of words formed by two final verse line endings. Example from Norwid (Cross and Child) leads to the problem of semiosis of the Cross, which is not always adequately modelled by contemporary scholars. In turn, the Christian symbolism of the Cross, covered in ethnological terms, opens the perspective of comparative study of the changes in semiotic structures in the sphere of eschatological representations. Interesting examples of such representations are provided by archaeological evidence. In the cases mentioned in the article, a diachronic relationship between symbol and allegory can be seen: allegory emerges as a result of decomposition of the symbolic structures into the sign structures.

The presented paper focuses on the topic of liturgical motifs – their variety, as well as symbolism – found in The Quest for the Holy Grail: one of the novel parts that altogether form the 13th-century saga of Arthurian prose. The main aim of the article is to highlight the references and allegories of both religious as well as ideological nature, which have been implemented by the (anonymous) author of the writing. What follows is the classification (methodological categorisation) of such motifs, definition of their potential purpose, and – last but not the least – an attempt to comprehend their origin in view of the cultural landscape of the historical period, in which the Quest has been composed.

There has been given the modern interpretation of literary dialogue between the Ukrainian writer Mykola Kulish and the Russian writer Myhailo Bulhakov which was started almost a century ago but it wasn’t grasped in full even until today. However this interpretation has been very vital and the processes occurring in the aspect of social consciousness in modern Ukraine vividly confirm it. Having analyzed the peculiarities of composition, plot and characters in ”Pathetic Sonata” by M. Kulish and «The White Guard” («Days of the Turbiny’s”) by M. Bulhakov, we come to the conclusion that this peculiar literary duel had for an object to displace the guidelines mainly in ideological aspect. It was also noted by the contemporaries: there appeared a great dispute in artistic circles, there is even a shorthand record of the meeting of Stalin and the Ukrainian writers which testifies it. But the disputes concerning the subjects raised in these writings are still raging in our days. So, obviously, it is too early to announce the winners of the literary duel.

This paper analizes O. Kobylanska’s story “Vals mèlancolque” as the epicenter of the writers’ refl ections on the category of harmony and happiness. The relationship of O. Kobylanska’s spiritual quest in «Diary» and short prose of the late nineteenth century is observed (“Nature”, “Rose”, “Ignorant”, “Vals mèlancolque”, “Humility”, etc.). The author’s vision of the substantial role of art and words in the story “Vals mèlancolque” is highligted. This paper also investigates the symbolist nature of a text. The writer emphasizes the understanding of the actual idea of women’s emancipation. The paper shows that female characters embody the author’s conscious distinction of such categories as “love” (Martha), “cold art” (Anna) and a harmonious combination of “pieces” and “love” (Sofi a). It is concluded that in the work of Kobylanska the text is a landmark, being both a kind of life and artistic credo.

The author attempts to present the garden motif, especially − the flower motif, in the writings of one of the most original Polish poets of the 19th century. In France, as an inheritor of romanticists, Norwid continuously participated in the forming of modernist poetics with their distinctive features like ethical naturalism, prophetism and also negative ontology. In this frame, the garden as a motif seems to be not only infinite space, but also a manufactory, an area of absence and oblivion, and at last − a place of illumination.

The article raises the issue of the existence of Ukrainian poetic/lyric dramaturgy. Based on the example of the analysis of lyric-intimate symbolist dramaturgical sketches by O. Oles’, it is proved that the characteristic features of such types of works are the lyric self-expression of the hero resulting from poetic speech, the incredible tenseness of monologues and dialogues, intensification of inner psychological conflict, reduction and erosion of the plot pattern of events, extension of theatricality and the emotional perception of the world and the mental condition of the dramatis personae, et cetera. For clarification of such dramaturgy of the writer, typologically similar plays by other Ukrainian and foreign authors are given.

Puppet Show Alexander Blok’s short lyrical drama introduced new perception of the principal elements of the theatrical performance structure. These include the scene-audience, actor-scenic character and illusion-disillusion relations. The paper attempts to reconstruct how Vsevolod Meyerhold saw Puppet Show and what Tadeusz Kantor derived from his reading of the piece. Influenced by Blok, Meyerhold began the process of theatre’s theatrical restitution reaching to the beginnings which include commedia dell’arte. Puppet Show, which influenced the theatre during the entire second half of the 20th century, can be read as a meta-text commentary to the very essence of theatre. It addresses the strain between the building of the scenic illusion and its disassembly. This strain pertained to the theatre of Tadeusz Kantor, who from his early years on, was fascinated with Blok’s drama. Kantor’s presence on stage in his performances is the consequence of Blok introducing the character of the Author in his drama. Furthermore, for Kantor, the expression “puppet show” was synonymic to the theatre of “love and death”, in other words − the theatre of constructed emotions.

A collection of Latin poems titled Septem sidera was first published in Krakow in 1629 in the printing house of Franciscus Cezary. Jan Brożek (Ioannes Broscius), a celebrated scholar and professor at the Academy of Cracow, edited this book. Brożek was also the author of the preface and of the dedication to Pope Urban VIII. He claimed to have found the poems amidst the documents left by Nicolaus Copernicus. Jerzy Krókowski analysed these poems in his book De septem sideribus quae Nicolao Copernico vulgo tribuuntur (Cracow 1926). Krókowski argued that the poems contained distinctive features of parodia sacra that were practised in the seventeenth century. The scholar concluded that the cycle of Septem sidera was probably written within Jesuit circles. The author of this article completes Krókowski’s argumentation by paying attention to the presence of Christian symbolism and juxtaposing the Latin text with Jesuit iconography.

The subject of this article is the comparative analysis of short excerpts of two works: De nobilitate et praecellentia foeminei sexus declamatio (Antwerp, 1529) by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim and the Polish translation of this work, i.e. O ślachetności a zacności płci niewieściej (Cracow, 1575) by Maciej Wirzbięta. The author concentrates on the question of meaning of the first parents names, Adam and Eve, which was addressed by both writers in order to prove the validity of the thesis on the superiority of women over men and reveals the resources used in the discourse: from the works of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, (e.g. St. Jerome, Psuedo-Cyprian) to the works of philosophers and humanists at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries (e.g. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, Johannes Reuchlin, Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples) fascinated with Jewish Kabbalah and gematria and the related theory of the names of God and the symbolism of tetragrammaton (JHWH).
