Opis:
The paper deals with the results of excavation in 2016 and 2017 at the site of Tell el-Murra in the northeastern part of the Nile Delta. The investigation focused on Trench T5, where settlement remains dated mostly from the Early Dynastic period were explored in its northern part, and early Old Kingdom structures in the southern part. Settlement remains of Lower Egyptian culture were also excavated in Trench S3B. Continued research on the Early Dynastic cemetery in Trench S3 yielded eight more graves, both pit burials and chambered tombs. In one case, the body was placed additionally in a pottery coffin. The results contribute new data on Early Dynastic settlement architecture and burial customs, as well as the oldest habitation associated with Lower Egyptian culture.

Opis:
The article aims at presenting the phenomenon of taking private lessons by secondary school leavers in Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. The research is an attempt to give an answer to the question of the scale of the phenomenon and its causes. In the research the survey method was used. The sample was of quota character. The research sample in Poland consisted of 3,479 respondents, 1,289 in Ukraine and 359 in Hungary. The collected data indicate that private lessons were taken by 52% of the respondents in Poland, 60% in Hungary and 71% in Ukraine. The results of correlative analysis indicate that private lessons were taken most often by the school leavers from the families of higher socio-economic status, having higher life aspirations and equipped with cultural capital with better average marks. Private lessons were taken more often in cities among students attending better schools. In the researched countries private lessons were taken in order to increase marks on the Matura exam as well as in order to get to a dream university. Perceiving private lessons as a “lifebelt” for students who lack knowledge was observed less often. Youth of higher status perceived private lessons as a strategy of building up advantage in the field of education.

Opis:
This article presents the most important aims and conduction of the “Patriotic Studies” project, carried by us. Research was carried out in Poland, Russia, Turkey, Georgia and Romania. We present the foundations of our decisions, and methodological solutions in fields of: aims, identification of the most important ideas, state of knowledge, research inspirations. We present the chosen research method, sample, and tested environments. In addition, the article contains the reconstruction of selected aspects of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, on which we based our strategy. The described research has the comparative and international nature. Three main aims were established: measuring the level and scope of identification with the state and society among the university students, measuring the level of social, economic and cultural capital of the examined youth and examining the correlation between them and the level of identification with the state and society manifested by the respondents, as well as determining and examining the possible correlations between the patriotic attitude (the degree of identification with the state and society) and the field of study, the country of residence and the level of symbolic capital.

Opis:
A new Polish project, the first to be carried out in Ethiopia by the PCMA University of Warsaw, jointly with Mekelle University, focused on the excavation of the ruins of a church tentatively dated to the Late Aksumite period (6th–8th centuries AD). The site, which is located in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray, was chosen for multiple reasons, not the least because of its location on ancient trade routes and because the surviving ruins offered the advantage of immediate visual impact. The work was unexpectedly interrupted by the global Covid-19 pandemic and recent political turbulences in the Tigray region. The paper discusses the early findings, providing, among others, a full description of the PolART excavations in the southeastern part of the church and the discovery of a rock shelter with an ancient inscription and painted pictograms.

Opis:
In 2012, an initial reconnaissance was conducted of the area north of the Jiyeh (Porphyreon) site. This coastal region is heavily urbanized and progressing building investment is causing the destruction of archaeological remains, which until quite recently were relatively well preserved in places. Subsequent investments involved the expansion of the Jiyeh Marina Resort hotel complex into terrain lying to the north of the Polish excavation area. Earlier construction work connected to the hotel complex was carried out in an area originally occupied by a pottery workshop from the late Hellenistic and early Roman periods, as well as at the site of a Roman– late antique necropolis. Further construction work, conducted without archaeological supervision, revealed more ancient structures which were in all probability connected with wine production.

The paper deals with the results of excavation in 2014 and 2015 at the Tell el-Murra site in the northeastern part of the Nile Delta. The investigations covered a settlement mostly from the Old Kingdom period found in trench T5; more specifically, the investigated features seem primarily connected with food production. Settlement remains from the Naqada III–possibly Early Dynastic and Protodynastic(?) periods were also explored in trench S3B. Continued research on the Early Dynastic cemetery in trench S3 yielded 16 more graves, including simple pit burials and chamber graves. In several cases bodies had been placed in pottery coffins. The presence of several mud-brick walls, possibly associated with older settlement structures, was also confirmed within the lattermost trench. Altogether the research provided new data on the settlement architecture, site development processes and burial customs invoked in the beginnings of the Egyptian state.

The site of Kharaib el-Desht on Failaka Island, Kuwait, was explored by an archaeological Kuwaiti–Polish team for the first time in 2013. The project included a survey and underwater archaeological research. Preliminary results indicate a dating of the site to the late Islamic period. Pottery collected from the survey of the site and from the excavations has been studied in a sepearate appendix to this report. As for the underwater and waterfront archaeology project, the main objective was to locate and describe seashore archaeological sites, provide documentary evidence and manage proper preservation of the discoveries in order to further educational opportunities.

Opis:
Geophysical prospection and small-scale archaeological excavation were undertaken on the site of Kaštelina, a Late Iron Age hillfort settlement located on the Stolac promontory in the eastern part of Rab island (Kvarner Gulf, Croatia). Within the frame of the “Archaeological topography of the island of Rab” program, a Polish–Croatian team applied a series of multidisciplinary methods to study the occupational history of the site, its preservation, the nature of selected site features and future research potential. Ground-penetrating radar and magnetometer surveys, combined with the implementation of the Amplitude Data Comparison (ADC) method, led to the detection of remains of Late Iron Age building structures distributed over the northwestern side of the Stolac promontory. Archaeological excavations verifying the findings of the geophysical survey resulted in the discovery of a dwelling with associated outdoor features. A preliminary assessment of the outcome of a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the site of Kaštelina emphasizes the importance of the collected data for a general understanding of Late Iron Age settlements and their internal organisation in a wider context.
