Opis:
The author reconstructs and comments on the views of Theodor W. Adorno with regard to Kafka’s works. They reflect the truth in details at most, never entirely. Therefore, they contradict Hegel’s philosophy. The author also points out that Kafka cannot be seen as a critic of capitalism, as Adorno perceives him.

Opis:
The considerations focus on the category of melancholy – and boredom related to that – in the personal records (epistolographic, diary, aphoristic writing) of Władysław Sebyła and Franz Kafka. Their interpretation reveals biographies of writers determined by this category, which had a considerable impact on their literary paths as well. Life permeated with melancholy, which generally made daily existence difficult, gave one of the most original and moving in Polish and European literature testimony of struggle with himself and the world, and at the same time it disclosed a significant closeness of artists, which proves the main thesis of the article on shared spiritual biographies by Władysław Sebyła and Franz Kafka.

Opis:
The article puts forward the theme and style specificity of Franz Kafka’s correspondence with his parents. Firstly, the letters feature information about facts from Kafka’s biography, his existence-related choices, as well as social and religious views; secondly, they refer the reader to the figures of speech and communicative games typical of the world of literature. The metamorphoses of style found in the analysis of Kafka’s letters require the reader to see the author as a literary figure and a human being; a person who does not create borders between his literary output and everyday existence. What is more, he is a person who found space of artistic fulfillment even in the relationship with his own parents. The analysis of Franz Kafka’s correspondence in the present article was conducted in two thematic sections. First section regards the issue of the writer’s attempts to acquire housing and existential independence from his parents. The other section describes Kafka’s efforts to protect his privacy in time of his lethal illness. In the case of both thematic sections, Kafka turns out to be an excellent stylist, changing his narrative style from one attracting the addressees emotionally to one repelling them. Another writing technique, constantly present in Kafka’s epistolography is stylistic dialectic which consists in exaggerating or downplaying phenomena, facts and inner states. As a result, thanks to his literary artistry Kafka achieves predominance of literary form over biographical reality as well as of symbolic and mythical images over the univocality of his lethal illness.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to read Franz Kafka’s texts in the light of findings included in the article of the 20th-century philosopher and sociologist of religion, Jacob Taubes. For Taubes, Kafka’s key figure is exclusion, a phenomenon of alienness of characters created by the author of The Castle. “Kafka describes the world from the perspective of an outsider, who is desperately seeking the acceptance of the world”, he wrote. In this article, the philosopher’s words will be verified. The basic question is whether Taubes as the messianic bard of the revolution (whose presence in the national philosophical reflection became belatedly increasingly noticeable) does not use too radical simplification in his laconic interpretation of Kafka’s writing.

Opis:
Franz Kafka was a writer interested in the European intellectual vision of the East. As an intellectual of the German cultural circles he was familiar with contemporary types of reception of the Orient (literary, philosophical and religious aspects), both in positive and negative terms. In several of his works (The Great Wall of China, An Old Manuscript, Jackals and Arabs) he employs oriental motifs to express his own, autonomous worlds of imagination and thought. Although they relate to the Western European projections of the East, Kafka was generally more interested in outlining a situation of tension between the rational and impulsive factor in human consciousness, or expressing the sense of alienation felt by an individual towards a modern state. In addition to these factors, for Kafka the Orient was also a way to manifest his own responsibility for creating literature understood as a way of spiritual development.

The article discusses the motifs inspired by the Chinese culture in Franz Kafka’s work. The main part is devoted to the interpretation of the short story The Great Wall of China, written by Kafka in the turbulent year of 1917, the year of World War and the revolution. However, the author also refers to the current international research literature to demonstrate that the Chinese inspirations of the writer from Prague are widely reflected in his other texts and biographical testimonies.

Opis:
Kafka belongs to the greatest letter writers of the 20th century, but his epistolary prose does not enjoy the popularity it deserves. Kafka’s letters present problems in a different way than his fictional works. They should be read both as a biographical document and a literary text corresponding with the short stories and novels of the author of The Metamorphosis. The article discusses Kafka’s letters to Felice Bauer, a young woman he loved and with whom he was twice engaged. In reality this story ended with a disaster, however its resulted was a remarkable literary text. Elias Canetti called the letters to Felice “the second Trial”; in fact, this epistolary series resembles a novel in letters rather than writing correspondence, such as the one left by Joyce, Mann or Gombrowicz. It offers a fascinating, extraordinary range of emotional experience, style and deep self-analysis. At the same time, it arouses concern due to obsessiveness, repetitions, helplessness of the hero.

Opis:
In the first part, the article discusses selected aspects of the history of the first Polish translation of F. Kafka’s novel The Trial, and indicates that numerous and significant changes were introduced into it anonymously, starting from the first post-war issue in 1957. The author claims that in fact we are not dealing with one and the same translation, but a translation palimpsest. The second part of the article presents the interpretation of The Trial which states that while writing his novel Kafka considerably referred to the anthroposophical ideas included in the book How to Know Higher Worlds by Rudolf Steiner, then regarding that it analyzes The Trial as a variant of a folktale (a mythical story) about a hero based on the findings of Vladimir Propp (Morphology of the Folktale) and Joseph Campbell (The Hero with Thousand Faces).
