    Developing on 150 years of reviews and scholarship of Charles Sangster’s The St. Law- rence and the Saguenay, this paper contends that Sangster’s poem is not merely derivative of British and American Romantic poetry, or a vague tourist poem, but that Sangster employs the language and images of Christian pilgrimage to purposefully detail the pilgrimage of his soul.

    In line with recent critical approaches to George Eliot that increasingly question her reputation as a realist writer, the article seeks to analyse the plot and characterisation in George Eliot’s Felix Holt: The Radical (1866) with reference to popular (and especially sensational and melodramatic) tropes often found in fiction of the period. The article discusses such plot elements as the trial scene in which the heroine gives testimony in order to help the hero, the heroine’s renouncement of her fortune, and the figures of a fallen woman (treated as a cautionary example by the heroine) and of a mysterious suitor with a troubled past.

    Artykuł dotyczy szczególnego położenia wspólnego Norwidowi i Baudelaire’owi urodzonym w tym samym 1821 r., które Paul Valéry określił mianem „sytuacji”. Jej podstawą jest konieczność określenia się wobec wielkich poprzedników − romantycznych wieszczów, odróżnienia się, walki z wpływem. Pozycja obu poetów, która określa ich stosunek do romantyzmu oparty na kontynuacji i zerwaniu (co utrudnia ustanowienie cezury), ukazana jest w kontekście współcześnie rozumianych kategorii takich jak romantyzm, dziewiętnastowieczność, pokolenie, nowoczesność czy kryzys. Taka perspektywa pozwala dostrzec wspólnotę twórczości i recepcji pisarzy zasadniczo nieporównywalnych.
    Norwid and Baudelaire, born in the same year (1821), unconsciously put themselves in a specific position which Paul Valéry described as a ‘situation’. Its fundamental basis is poets’ determination to define themselves against their great Romantic predecessors, stand out and finally, to release themselves from the constraints of the Romantic influence. The position the two poets find themselves in defines their attitude to Romanticism which is based on carrying on and breaking up with the Romantic tradition and this, on the other hand, makes a time mark even more difficult to establish. Their position is presented in the context of contemporary categories such as Romanticism, 19th-century culture model, generation, modernity, and crisis. Such perspective makes it possible to recognise a shared sense of unity in Norwid and Baudelaire’s literary outputs as well as in their reception styles despite the fact the poets are essentially beyond any comparison.

    This paper challenges the critical cliché that in recent fiction Darwinism replaces religion and that the scientific worldview is always in opposition to Christian belief. A close reading of three British novels written between the late 1960s and the early 1990s – namely, John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman, A.S. Byatt’s Morpho Eugenia (a short novel published together with her other novelette Conjugal Angel in the volume entitled Angels and Insects), and Hilary Mantel’s A Change of Climate demonstrates how Darwinian references themselves evolve over time. Three aspects of the novels are juxtaposed: primarily, the way they depict natural history in the 19th century – Darwin and his fellow naturalists – and thus create the myth of how modern science was born in Victorian England. Secondly, the paper establishes what the novelists in question understand by the word ‘science’ and whether for them natural science is or is not science proper. Thirdly and lastly, what is the novelists’ attitude to the alleged conflict between Christian belief and the theory of evolution. In the quarter century dividing Fowles’s novel from Mantel’s much changes in the way each of these problems is handled.
