Opis:
The development of the Muslim society in Northern Nigeria is often seen as a constant struggle of “scripturalist” Islam against allegedly “non-Islamic” influences. A person’s claim to Islam can be challenged on various levels. The most serious is takfir, a declaration that the supposed Muslim is guilty of kufr or unbelief. Another form of condemnation is tabdi´, the accusation of bid’a or “reprehensible innovation”. The third form of condemnation, weaker than either takfir or tabdi´, is accusation of fisq, that is immorality or sin in matters of belief. The question “who is a Muslim” has been a central point of conflict in Nigeria for centuries. In this article, I have shown that the tension between orthodox theology and popular religion will not be easily resolved.

Islamic reform
Opis:
Abubakar Gumi (1922–1992) was one of the central personalities for the development of Islam in Northern Nigeria who devoted himself to work on the reform of the religion (tajdid). He was also very active in the issue of the political unity of Muslims. Gumi’s major religious goal was to eradicate all innovations (bid’a) and to purify the faith. The Sufi brotherhoods were in his eyes not only the agents of the bi’a, but also movements which blocked the unification of Muslims. On the basis of his anti-Sufi ideas, Abubakar Gumi was connected with other thinkers of the Islamic world, especially Sayyid Qutb, the most influential thinker of the Egyptian Muslim Brothers. Gumi’s concept of the reform was also deeply influenced by the Wahhabi ideology. The article is an attempt to present Gumi’s condemnation of the bid’a as it is reflected in his programmatic treatise Al-Aqida as-sahiha bi-muwafaqat al-shari’a (The Right Faith according to the prescriptions of the Shari’a). Some attention is also paid to Gumi’s educational efforts and his role as the leader of the most recent movement of tajdid among Muslims in Northern Nigeria.

Opis:
The paper presents the political thought of Muhammad Yusuf, who was the ideologist of the northern Nigerian organisation for Islamic renewal known as Boko Haram. Muhammad Yusuf was a Salafi scholar who preached the necessity to revive the earliest form of Islam, to introduce Sharia in full in northern Nigeria, and to build a religious state based on the Sokoto caliphate. Yusuf regarded democracy as an illegal political system and equated it with polytheism. He perceived politicians and secular state’s administrational workers as idolaters and negated their right to consider themselves Muslims. His teachings, based on disdain for the incumbent government, provided him with social support and served as inspiration for anti-establishment sentiments.

The aim of this article is to summarize the ideology of Muhammad Yusuf, who was the founder of Boko Haram – the northern Nigerian terrorist organization. Yusuf created his theory in the context of neofundamentalist teachings of the ‘Yan Izala. During the cooperation with the ‘Yan Izala, Yusuf became convinced that Western education and work for the secular government are strictly forbidden in Islam. On the basis of this theory, he created a complex ideology that became a source of today’s Boko Haram brutality in northern states of Nigeria.

I also present Shekau’s way to leadership after the death of his predecessor, Muhammad Yusuf. I analyse the influence of Shekau’s image on his problems with the leadership in the organisation, as well as with gaining external allies among other militant Islamic organisations.

Gestures, at first glance, look like spontaneous movements of hands that help the speaker to produce the utterance. A more detailed analysis shows that these movements are strictly associated with certain concepts, and rather than being random, they are meaningful and systemic. The first part of the paper contains an overview of gestures of negation used by Hausa speakers (both emblems and co-speech gestures). In the second part, four types of co-speech gestures are scrutinised: shaking the index finger sideways, hand scissors, brushing the palms against each other and brushing the back of the hands. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the gestures in question co-occur with the specific markers of negation and emphasize one of the meanings or functions of the negation, such as prohibition, refusal, rejection, denial, nonexistence and totality.

Islam teaches the role of destiny (qadar) in human life and reaffirms the belief that what is destined to be yours will come. This paper investigates to what extent the Islamic concept of fate and free will has shaped the mindset of the Hausa people (Northern Nigeria). It has been based on the analysis of Hausa sayings, proverbs and poetry which serve as an avenue for transmitting knowledge, attitudes and moral values and constitute an important aspect of the Hausa culture.

Opis:
The article touches upon the topic of contemporary Hausa novels called littattafan soyayya - “books of love” by the Hausa people themselves and “market literature” by literary critics. These novels deal with the subjects of love, marriage, family customs and moral issues and belong to the realist genre. The main aim of the article is to show the stereotypical image of the East through the lens of Hausa writers. First, the history of the Hausa novels written in Latin alphabet is overviewed. Next, the stereotypical vision of several countries of the East is discussed and illustrated by quotations from the novels. From the Hausa perspective, Saudi Arabia is a pilgrimage destination, but also a modern country in which one can study, work, find high-quality health service and buy things unavailable in Nigeria. Egypt is a place for religious and secular studies, but also a destination of health tourism. Exceptionally beautiful women come from Sudan and India. The United Arab Emirates is portrayed as a modern and highly developed country.

This paper deals with the meaning of two notions: “communal conflict” and “ethnic conflict”. It has two aims: explaining how both notions are most often understood in the scholarly literature and identifying the similarities and differences between them. In fulfilling these aims, a Nigerian exemplification of both types of conflicts is employed. In individual parts of the article, an analysis of the meaning of both notions is undertaken; the case of the Biafran War (1967–1970) regarded as an ethnic conflict and an example of a communal conflict in the city of Sagamu (1999) are discussed, and conclusions referring to the similarities and differences between both notions are presented.

Opis:
The article is an analysis of functions and contents of Hausa proverbs in the Nigerian political discourse. Hausa proverbs (karin magana) are short linguistic formations, durable sayings with fixed interpretations. In formal terms, karin magana (just as proverbs in other languages) are the units of text, the minimal (finished) texts which are used in utterance as set ready-made quotes. The source material for the analysis covers selected press texts published in some of the most popular Nigerian newspapers in Hausa whose main theme is politics. The titles of these newspapers are as follows: Aminiya, Albishir, Al-Mizan and Leadership A Yau. All press articles used for the analysis were published between the 30th of January and the 27th of February 2019 when the Nigerian General Election was held. The analysis has shown that proverbs are a significant element of press language and have various functions in the structure of journalistic texts. Analyzing the contents expressed in the proverbs, it was observed that their general meanings are solidified in the context of current political events, which allows them to be used as rhetorical figures aimed at influencing the reader in the intended manner.

Opis:
The paper tries to answer the question of how the conception of “water” is understood by the Hausa people living mainly in Nigeria and Niger. The main aim of the paper is to develop a cultural schema of water based on everyday contact with this liquid in the household and in the natural environment. The analysis is based on the methodology of cultural linguistics (Sharifian 2017) which examines the relationship between language and cultural conceptualizations. The first part of the article is devoted to every-day use of water. The second part deals with ritual cleansing and healing. The third part describes natural and artificial water reservoirs. Particular attention has been paid to terms co-occuring with the Hausa word ruwa meaning ‘water’, i.e. names of vessels, containers, tanks, and reservoirs as well as people and creatures related to water, such as water carriers, masters of water and supernatural beings inhabiting rivers and lakes.
