Opis:
Zinc (Zn) is an important element for the proper plant growth and development. However, Zn is also a metal commonly used in the industry, which may cause its excessive accumulation in soil. High soil Zn content leads to its increased uptake by plants growing near industrialized areas. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) live in symbiosis with the majority of plant species. These fungi have the ability to reduce Zn uptake by plants, when this element is present in an increased concentration in the plant root zone. An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of AMF on Zn uptake by lettuce plants grown in rockwool at increasing levels of Zn in the nutrient solution. This effect was investigated at two P levels in the nutrient solution, i.e. 40 mg P (optimal for lettuce) and 10 mg P dm-3. Mycorrhizal parameters, yield, content of dry matter, ascorbic acid, glucose, fructose and sucrose as well as the plant’s nutritional status in P, Cu, Mn, Mo, Fe and Zn were determined in the study. The effectiveness of mycorrhization of lettuce grown in rockwool was proven in the study. AMF reduced the Zn content in lettuce grown under excessive Zn concentrations in the root zone. Moreover, this decrease was greater in plants receiving the nutrient solution with a lower concentration of P. Additionally, mycorrhiza decreased the content of Cu, Fe, Mn and Mo in lettuce, despite an optimal (not increased) concentration of these micronutrients in the nutrient solution supplied to plants. Arbuscular mycorrhiza did not affect the plant yield, content of ascorbic acid, glucose, fructose, sucrose or the content of P in lettuce leaves.

Opis:
Leaves from three fig (Ficus carica L.) varieties (White, Black Royal and White Royal) were collected at different development stages of the tree, i.e. flowering, fruit development, fruit maturity, and postharvest, after which the variation of macro- (K, Na, Ca, Mg, N, P) and micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, B) concentrations during the growing season were measured. The leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg during the studied period for the White variety ranged from 19 to 25, from 1.1 to 1.3, from 13 to 18, from 20 to 24 and from 2.7 to 2.9 g kg-1 (on dry weight basis DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the Black Royal variety ranged from 22 to 26, from 1.1 to 1.4, from 13 to 19, from 23 to 29 and from 2.5 to 3.4 g kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the White Royal variety ranged from 19 to 25, 0.9 to 1.2, 10 to 17, 26 to 30 and 4.3 to 4.5 g kg-1 (DW), respectively. The leaf content values of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B during the studied period for the White variety ranged from 107 to 147, from 42 to 35, from 10 to 9, from 52 to 61 and from 23 to 40 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the Black Royal variety ranged from 77 to 155, from 38 to 41, from 8 to 9, from 52 to 66 and from 23 to 56 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the White Royal variety ranged from 84 to 126, from 44 to 48, from 8 to 9, from 88 to 98 and from 23 to 47 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. According to the results, the leaf nutritional content varies in the plant’s development stages and there were differences between the fig varieties in the nutrient content at different development stages, which indicated that different varieties of plants need different amounts of nutrients during the growing cycle. These results should be taken into consideration when elaborating a fertilization program.

Opis:
The paper gives a comprehensive insight into the role of zinc in the biosphere. It reviews numerous functions of this metal at various levels of the organisation of ecosystems. An attempt has ben made to assess its importance as a microelement, while not neglecting its toxicity due to excessive accumulation of zinc in the environment. Zinc is a natural component of the Earth's crust, but in many places it has accumulated in amounts near or above the safe levels. Currently, the use of this metal is very broad, and therefore attention should be drawn to possible consequences arising from elevated levels of zinc in the environment. Dispelling controversies surrounding heavy metals is a necessary step for gaining systematic and wider knowledge on these elements. This in turn will create an opportunity for the development of strategies and subsequent actions undertaken by everyone, from individuals to major international industrial corporations, aimed at achieving homeostasis in an environment polluted with heavy metals. Increased levels of zinc can adversely affect microbiological and biochemical processes occurring in the soil and the development of plants, which has a negative impact on the quantity and quality of crops. Therefore, low bioavailability of heavy metals, including zinc, in agricultural land is a key to the stability of ecosystems and food security.

Opis:
Red head cabbage comes in many varieties, which differ from one another in the length of vegetative period, yield quality and general biological value. The aim of our study has been to determine the content of anthocyanins in extracts from three different cultivars of red head cabbage (cv. Koda, Haco POL and Kissendrup SWE) and to examine their antioxidative activity. It was found that the content of anthocyanins in extracts from red head cabbage was significantly varied, depending on a cultivar. Extracts from cv. Kissendrup SWE contained significantly more anthocyanins, whereas those obtained from cv. Koda had the smallest content of those compounds. Anthocyanins extracted from cv. Haco POL red cabbage demonstrated the highest antioxidative capacity. Weak correlation was shown between the content of anthocyanins and their antioxidative capacity (R2 from 0.278 to 0.297).
