Opis:
The research aimed to assess the effect of bottom sediment on the content, bioaccumulation and translocation of heavy metals in maize biomass. The investigations were conducted in 2006-2007 as a pot experiment on light soil of the granulometric composition of weakly-loamy sand. The experimental design comprised 3 treatments: without sediment (I), a 5% sediment admixture (II) and a 10% sediment admixture to the soil (III). Bottom sediment was added to the soil in the first year of the investigations. The content of Zn, Cu, Ni. Pb, Cd and Cr was determined using the ICP-EAS method in the plant material after its dry mineralization and ash solution in HNO3. The uptake of the above-mentioned metals by maize was computed alongside their bioaccumulation and translocation coefficients. The effect of bottom sediment admixture on heavy metal concentrations in maize was determined to be varied, e.g. a 5% dose of sediment added to soil decreased the content of all the analyzed heavy metals in the biomass of maize aerial parts, whereas a 10% admixture increased the content of Cu, Ni, Pb and Cr. The values of bioaccumulation coefficients revealed that an admixture of both doses of bottom sediment led to a decreased accumulation of Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr and Ni (5% dose) in maize aerial biomass. Moreover, the plant more easily accumulated Zn, Cd and Cu than Cr, Ni or Pb. Permissible amounts of heavy metals in plants to be used as animal fodder were not exceeded in the maize biomass.
Schemat doświadczenia obejmował 3 obiekty: bez osadu (I), z dodatkiem 5% osadu (II) i dodatkiem 10% osadu do gleby (III). Osad denny dodano do gleby w pierwszym roku badań.

Opis:
The importance of nickel (Ni) in the environment is an issue that is gaining broader recognition. While nickel is an element essential for plants, it is also a heavy metal. Nickel is a component of nine metalloenzymes, including urease, which participates in urea hydrolysis. It also helps some plants to protect themselves against pathogens and herbivorous insects. There are many sources of Ni in the environment, which can be a problem because at higher concentrations this element is toxic to plants and other living organisms. Therefore, standards have been defined for the Ni content in air, water, soil and plants. Its content is monitored in the air. More and more frequently, attention is paid to this element as an allergen in humans. In the world, attempts have been made to phytoextract nickel from contaminated soils using nickelphilous plants, the so-called hyperaccumulators, and even to recover the metal from these plants by so-called phytomining. On the other hand, nickel-containing fertilizers are marketed and used in cases of nickel deficiency in plants. In industry, this element is primarily used for the production of steel and alloys. The most recent application of nickel is related to graphene, which was invented 10 years ago. Although nickel contamination does not occur in Poland, we cannot rule out this risk in the future. Thus, it is important to monitor the fate of nickel in the environment.

Opis:
Same as in many parts of the world, many edible weeds belonging to different families that have not been cultured in Turkey are traditionally used in the making of many foods. In this study, minerals and nutrients of six edible wild plant species belonging to the Liliaceae family, which are currently used in the production of herby cheese in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, were determined. The determination of these macro- and micro-minerals was performed on ICP-AES and UV Visible spectrophotometers. As a result of the study, major differences were discovered between these plant species in terms of the mineral content (Na, Mg, K, s, Ca, P, Fr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr, and Co) and nutrient properties (total ash, crude fibre, pH, N, and crude protein). Except for the Allium schoenoprasum species, all plant samples were found to be rich in many important minerals, such as Fe, Cu, Ca, K, Mn, and Zn, which are known to be vital for human health. The concentrations of these minerals and a few heavy metals in plant samples were found in the following ranges: 17.25 - 25.47 mg kg-1 for copper, 18.45 - 34.14 mg kg-1 for zinc, 33.42 - 98.42 mg kg-1 for manganese, 0.12 - 0.54 mg kg-1 for chromium, 0.31 - 1.61 mg kg-1 cobalt. Many significant correlations were found among the parameters analysed. The study presents essential results on the availability of some vital minerals that could be useful or harmful to consumers, in order to provide dietary information for designing value-added foods.

Opis:
Zinc (Zn) is an important element for the proper plant growth and development. However, Zn is also a metal commonly used in the industry, which may cause its excessive accumulation in soil. High soil Zn content leads to its increased uptake by plants growing near industrialized areas. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) live in symbiosis with the majority of plant species. These fungi have the ability to reduce Zn uptake by plants, when this element is present in an increased concentration in the plant root zone. An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of AMF on Zn uptake by lettuce plants grown in rockwool at increasing levels of Zn in the nutrient solution. This effect was investigated at two P levels in the nutrient solution, i.e. 40 mg P (optimal for lettuce) and 10 mg P dm-3. Mycorrhizal parameters, yield, content of dry matter, ascorbic acid, glucose, fructose and sucrose as well as the plant’s nutritional status in P, Cu, Mn, Mo, Fe and Zn were determined in the study. The effectiveness of mycorrhization of lettuce grown in rockwool was proven in the study. AMF reduced the Zn content in lettuce grown under excessive Zn concentrations in the root zone. Moreover, this decrease was greater in plants receiving the nutrient solution with a lower concentration of P. Additionally, mycorrhiza decreased the content of Cu, Fe, Mn and Mo in lettuce, despite an optimal (not increased) concentration of these micronutrients in the nutrient solution supplied to plants. Arbuscular mycorrhiza did not affect the plant yield, content of ascorbic acid, glucose, fructose, sucrose or the content of P in lettuce leaves.

Opis:
Degradation of various compounds with the simultaneous formation of new or activation of initially unavailable chemically bound substances or elements can occur very often during the thermal conversion of organic materials. Thus, the aim of this research was to determine the effect of thermal conversion of municipal sewage sludge on the content of total and water-soluble forms of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, and on the phytotoxicity of the solid products generated in the process. The research material consisted of stabilized sewage sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants in Krakow (SS1), Krzeszowice (SS2) and Słomniki (SS3), Malopolska Province. The treatment plants are equipped with systems of mechanical-biological sewage treatment. The content of bioavailable forms was determined after a 24-hour extraction of a sample with redistilled water (material : water = 1: 5). Phytotoxicity of the extracts (material : water = 1 : 5) prepared from unprocessed sewage sludge and from biochars was examined against Lepidium sativum. Thermal conversion of municipal sewage sludge, with reduced air access, caused an increase in the content of total forms of copper, cadmium, lead and zinc in stable products of the process. The process of thermal conversion caused a reduction in the content of water-soluble forms of the elements, which points to their lower bioavailability. Phytotoxicity of sewage sludge was influenced more by its origin, and in consequence by the type of sewage treated, than by thermal conversion.

Opis:
The progressive degradation of soils is a recently increasing environmental problem. The risk of soil degradation may be associated, for example, with landslides, flooding, soil erosion. However, these are relatively rare phenomena compared to the risk of chemical degradation caused by human activity. Given the limited research on the positive effect of miscanthus biochar on soil properties, a study was carried out aimed at determining changes in pH, electrical conductivity, sorption properties, and mobility of selected heavy metals in sandy soil treated with various chemicals. Biochar used in the study was produced at a temperature of 300°C. The addition of biochar to soil generally increased the pH value, regardless of the type of chemical degradation. The study revealed a decrease in the hydrolytic acidity value and, at the same time, no significant changes in the content of alkaline cations and sorption capacity of the biochar-treated soil. The best effect on reducing the mobility of trace elements was achieved by adding biochar to the soil supplemented with acidifying substances. Bearing in mind the current agricultural and environmental problems, there is a need to increase the effectiveness of biochar and to direct its action to improve specific soil properties.

Zwierzęta ubijano w wieku 90, 120, 150 i 180 dni życia. Próby do oznaczenia pierwiastków pobierano z m. longissimus dorsi. Oznaczono zawartość: Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe i Mg. W tkance mięśniowej koziołków stwierdzono wyższą zawartość Pb niż u tryczków, a istotną (p<0.01) różnicę stwierdzono w przypadku uboju w 120. dniu życia, natomiast zawartość Cd była wyższa (p<0.05) w przypadku 90., 120. i 150. dnia w tkankach tryczków (0.003-0.014 mg kg- 1 ) niż koziołków. Natomiast wyższy poziom miedzi stwierdzono w tkance mięśniowej tryczków, a cynku u koziołków ubijanych w wieku 150 i 180 dni życia.

Our objective has been to determine the total content of magnesium, iron, chromium and zinc, as well as the heavy metal fractions in selected natural fertilisers, such as swine and bovine manure and poultry litter from laying hens and broilers. The total content of the metals was determined by the ICP-AES method following dry mineralisation in a muffle furnace at 450°C and dissolving the ash in HCl (1:1). Fractions of Fe, Zn and Cr were isolated by the 3-step sequential fractionation method proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR). This study has shown that the analysed organic materials had different content of the determined metals. The largest amount of Mg was found in litter from laying hens and the largest amounts of Fe, Cr and Zn were in litter from broiler chickens. The smallest amount of Mg was found in swine manure, Fe and Cr were the least abundant in litter from laying hens, and the lowest Zn content was in bovine manure. The content of these four heavy metals was significantly differentiated by the origin of fertiliser. The exchangeable fraction F1 had the smallest share in the total Fe content among all the fertilisers. As for chromium, this fraction made the smallest contribution to the total Cr content in litter from laying hens and broilers while the reducible fraction F2 was the smallest part of the total content in both types of manure. Fraction F1 of zinc was the smallest in the total content in swine and bovine manure and while the oxidisable fraction F3 made up the smallest share in the total content of this metal in litter from broilers.

The impact of adding a natural clay sorbent such as halloysite on the content of selected heavy metals in the biomass of common orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) was studied in a pot experiment. The study was conducted on mucky soil enriched anthropogenically with heavy metals, whose values exceeded permissible standards of soil quality and values of the geological background. The experiment included three variants with differentiated percentage of halloysite, i.e. 10%, 30% and 50%, as well as two control cultivations. The results confirm the impact of halloysite on the physicochemical properties of soil, consisting in increased soil pH and sorption capacity. Addition of halloysite to soil also differentiated the quantity of crop yield and concentration of heavy metals in the plant and soil. Halloysite was found to have an inconsistent impact on the concentration of heavy metals in the biomass of common orchardgrass, which was proven by some elevation in the level of heavy metals and a higher bioaccumulation factor (BAF). Halloysite constituting 50% of the mass of substrate substantially increased the consumption of Pb and reduced the sorption of Cr. Addition of halloysite stabilised Zn and Cu in soil. The results of our preliminary investigation indicate that addition of halloysite to soils with excessive concentrations of heavy metals influences the level of soil sorption to the extent which may be effective for soil remediation.

Opis:
The Arctic region is under an ever-increasing anthropogenic influence. The nature in the Arctic is extremely vulnerable to the effects of pollutants, which may eventually lead to certain irreversible ecological processes. Heavy metals occupy a special place among priority pollutants. Therefore, the aim of this study has been to assess the ecological status and the degree of contamination with heavy metals of the soils of Arctic and sub-Arctic areas. Arctic soils were studied in the region of the White Sea and the Barents Sea during the Arctic Floating University, a research expedition held in July 2012 by M. Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University. During the expedition, samples were collected and the landscapes (topography, vegetation) were described. In order to assess the impact of environmental contamination, the total content of heavy metals in soils was evaluated by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). The level of soil contamination was assessed according to the maximum permissible concentrations ( MPC), temporary permissible concentrations (TPC), chemical substance factor (Kc) and the total pollution index (Zc). Our analysis of the experimental data showed a wide-range change in the soil agrochemical parameters. It has been demonstrated that the investigated soils of the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas represent different soil properties, are affected by different climatic conditions and belong to different texture taxonomic classes, e.g. the grain-size distribution varies from sand to clay loam; the pH ranges from strongly acid to neutral and the content of organic substances can be very low to high. According to the total pollution index, almost all the soils present an acceptable heavy metal contamination level. In most of the studied soils, the heavy metals in terms of amounts accumulated can be ordered as follows: Co > Pb > Cu > Zn > As > Ni > V > Mn.

Opis:
Lead has been used extensively for thousands of years. Once introduced into the environment, like any other heavy metal, lead accumulates in soil and sediments. High lead concentrations in river and lake sediments can be harmful to aquatic organisms. At present, uncontaminated water sediments in the northern and central parts of Poland contain below 9 mg of lead per kg. The lakes located within the following lake districts: Greater Poland, Pomeranian and Masurian, provided 409 samples of surface sediments from deep spots (the profundal zone). All the samples were tested for the content of Pb and other selected macroelements. The content of Ca, Mg, Fe, K, Mn, Na, P, Pb and S was determined by ICP-OES and the total organic carbon (TOC) was evaluated by the coulometric titration method. The observed range of lead concentration was from below 3 to 222 mg kg-1. The average content was 37 mg kg-1, the geometric mean 30 mg kg-1, and the median 33 mg kg-1. In the majority of samples, the lead concentration was higher than the geochemical background. Only in 5.77% of the samples, the lead content was lower than 10 mg kg-1. The lead concentration in the sediments was relatively well correlated with the total organic carbon (r = 0.59), aluminium (r = 0.45) and sulphur (r = 0.47), moderately correlated with iron (r = 0.26) and potassium (r = 0.28), very weakly correlated with phosphorus (r = 0.12) and negatively correlated with the calcium concentration (r = -0.28). No correlation was observed for manganese (r = -0.05), magnesium (r = 0.07) and sodium (r = -0.07). Factor analysis revealed the presence of two factors that together accounted for nearly 45% of variation. The first factor included aluminium, potassium and magnesium, and the second one - sulphur and organic carbon. The lead share was low in the first factor (0.343), but very high in the second factor (0.757). Based on the results of the factor analysis, it can be assumed that lead in the organic matter-rich sediments of the profundal zone is deposited mainly in the form of sulphides. Lead concentration varied among the sediments obtained from various lake districts; it was lower in the lakes located within the Pomeranian Lake District than in those from Greater Poland and Masurian Lakes.
Z jezior Pojezierzy: Wielkopolskiego, Pomorskiego i Mazurskiego pobrano 409 próbek powierzchniowych osadów z głęboczków jezior (strefa profundalna). We wszystkich próbkach określono zawartość Pb oraz wybranych pierwiastków głównych. Zawartość Ca, Mg, Fe, K, Mn, Na, P, Pb i S określono metodą ICP-OES, a zawartość węgla organicznego (TOC) – metodą kulometrycznego miareczkowania. Pierwszy czynnik grupuje glin, potas i magnez, drugi – siarkę i węgiel organiczny. Zaobserwowano zróżnicowanie w zawartości ołowiu w osadach różnych pojezierzy; osady jezior Pojezierza Pomorskiego zawierają mniej Pb niż osady jezior Pojezierzy Wielkopolskiego i Mazurskiego.

Opis:
Chemical composition of composts depends on a number of factors, including a type of composted waste and composting technology. This study was conducted to determine concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and selected heavy metals in composts manufactured from various waste substances and using different technologies. Organic carbon content in the composts depended on a type of composted waste - the smallest quantities were found in the compost of municipal waste. Organic matter transformations occurring during composting probably led to a systematic decline of the soluble organic compound amounts. The share of soluble carbon in the total concentration did not exceed 35% of the analysed composts. The composts based on plant waste were more abundant in nitrogen and the share of nitrogen extracted with sodium pyrophosphate and sodium base did not exceed 40%. Analysis of fractional composition of humus compounds of the composts revealed higher content of humic acid carbon in relation to fulvic acid carbon. The proportion of non-hydrolysing carbon in these materials was on average over 70%. The content of the most mobile heavy metal forms in the composts was low and implied that these elements occurred in a form less available to plants.
Analiza składu frakcyjnego związków próchnicznych badanych kompostów wykazała, w każdym przypadku, większą zawartość węgla kwasów huminowych w stosunku do zawartości węgla kwasów fulwowych.

Opis:
The sea buckthorn is a plant valued for its berries, used by people and eaten by animals. It is grown in urban areas as an ornamental shrub with berries and leaves. The shrubs are characterised by their high resistance to drought, soil salinity or air pollution. The aim of the research carried out at the University of Technology in Szczecin, in Western Pomerania, was to check the influence of the city’s conditions on the quality of berries: mineral and chemical composition, as well as the content of L-ascorbic acid, nitrites and nitrates in shrubs growing along roads. The content of micro- and macronutrients as well as the colour and Green index of leaves were determined. Soils were characterised by similar and low salinity (0.31-0.41 g kg-1 NaCl). The content of various minerals in leaves varied depending on the test site and it was most often correlated with the soil content of these elements. Leaves collected from shrubs which grew next to a street contained more lead (1.06-1.27) but significantly less cadmium (0.08-0.11 mg kg-1) than berries collected in an orchard (Cd 0.17 and Pb 0.83 mg kg-1). The content of organic constituents in berries varied depending on the site of harvest. At the site beside the road, the study revealed a higher level of soluble solids (11.35%), L-ascorbic acid (2312 mg kg-1), organic acids (10.2 g kg-1) and nitrates (47 mg kg-1). All of the examined berries had a low level of nitrites (0.02-0.07 mg kg-1). It has been demontrated that leaves picked from the Hergo cultivar shrubs were darker (parameter L* - top 47.3), greener – especially at the top (parameter a* -13.1). They also had a higher Green index value than the leaves of shrubs growing beside the road (38.2). There is a high level (-0.81) correlation between the measured a* parameter CIE and Green index (SPAD), The sea buckthorn is perfect for urban areas. It is decorative, resistant to urban conditions and has valuable berries, which do not accumulate harmful constituents (heavy metals, nitrates, nitrites).

Opis:
The safety and security of different foodstuffs are considered important and have a high priority in global sustainable development. The contents of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb and Cd were estimated in edible parts of 60 vegetable samples, irrigation water and agricultural soil collected from 5 farms in suburban areas around Riyadh district, Saudi Arabia. Also, soil pollution indices, pollution load index and contamination factor (PLI, CF), bioaccumulation factor (BAF), non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices (HQ, THQ, and ILCR) were estimated. The content of heavy metals in irrigation water and soil was within the recommended permissible levels, except for Cd in soil, which exceeds permissible levels. The trend of metal concentrations in both agricultural soil and vegetables was found in the order: Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd. Cluster analysis of the metal content in vegetables showed a tendency towards the accumulation of heavy metals in the order of leaves > roots > fruits > flowers > tuber. The BAFs values found were < 1.0, HQs values for Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Ni were found to be < 1, while the estimated HQs for Pb and Cd were > 1, posing greater risk to the health of adults and children. THQ values were higher for children compared to adults. ILCR values for Cd showed a serious issue, as it exceeds the threshold risk limit (>10−4) in all parts of the investigated vegetables in all sampling sites.
