Opis:
Owing to their high nutritional value and medicinal properties, garlic chives, a representative of the genus Allium, are a valuable vegetable. The edible parts are green leaves and young stalks with flower buds and the bulbs. Allium tuberosum, known as garlic chives, Chinese chives or Oriental garlic, is a perennial species, adapted to a moderate climate. Of special concern is the fact that this species is readily infested by weeds, especially when grown on the same stand for many years. One possible measure to combat weed infestation is mulching. The aim of our study has been to make an assessment of the effect of mulching on yielding and biological value of Oriental garlic in the second and third year of its growth. The mulches used in the experiment were black and white polyethylene foil, black polypropylene agrotextile, black biodegradable foil and miscanthus chaff. The research results proved that the leaf yield significantly increased in the subsequent years of plant cultivation. The highest leaf yield from garlic chives was obtained on the plots mulched with black polypropylene agrotextile, black polyethylene foil and black biodegradable foil. Two-year-old plants contained significantly more dry matter, chlorophyll, carotenoids and potassium but less of nitrates. Mulching with white polyethylene foil considerably favoured the accumulation of dry matter, carotenoids, phosphorus, potassium and nitrates by garlic chives

Opis:
Eggplant is a vegetable which deserves our interest owing to its high nutritive value and a wide range of possible cooking recipes. The biological value of this vegetable depends on several biotic and abiotic factors. The aim of this research has been to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilization methods on the quality of eggplant fruits. Application of ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate and Entec 26, a slow-release fertilizer containing a nitrification inhibitor, was tested in a three–factorial experiment. The fertilizers were applied once, before planting, making use of the whole dose (100, 150 and 200 kg N ha–1), or twice, divided into a dose given before the growing period and another one supplied as top dressing (75+25, 100+50, 100+100 kg N ha–1). The eggplant fruits contained on average 6.80% – 8.06% of dry matter, 1.85-2.48% of reducing sugars and 2.00- -2.56% of total sugars, 10.58 mg 100 g–1 f.m. of vitamin C, 4.27-6.56 mg 100 g–1 f.m. of anthocyanins, 50.70-71.06 mg 100 g–1 f.m. of polyphenols. The mean content of P in dry matter was 0.33%, K – 3.99%, Mg – 0.25% and Ca – 0.25%. Significant differences in the quality of eggplant fruits were demonstrated between particular years of cultivation. The biological value of eggplant fruits did not depend on the method of nitrogen fertilization.

Opis:
Japanese bunching onion remains a less common crop in Poland, where it is mostly grown in home gardens as a perennial plant species and used as cut foliage in early spring. Recently, some pseudostem type cultivars producing few tillers have been developed, which can be grown for the use of whole plants in early growth stages or for blanched pseudostems like leek species. This study, comprising two field trials, has been undertaken to evaluate the yield, its quality and nutritional value of cv. Performer Japanese bunching onion as affected by the growing season and age of plants. Seed propagated transplants were grown for a similar period of time from 5 Apr to 8 Jun, 6 May-8 Jul, 7 Jun-10 Aug, 8 Jul-10 Sep, 5 Aug-11 Oct or harvested 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135 and 150 days after planting. Plants grown for 135 and 150 days were blanched by mounding soil around the lower leaf bases. The results of the study indicated that plants of the same age harvested in monthly intervals since early June to September produced similar yields, while those in October gave lower yields, with a gradual decrease of dry matter, carotenoids, sugars, volatile oils and nitrates (V). The delay of harvest date from 60 to 120 days after planting resulted in a substantial yield increment with a simultaneous depletion of vitamin C, carotenoids, chlorophyll a+b, sugars, volatile oils, nitrates, total N, K and Ca content. Blanched plants were characterized by a considerably longer white portion of the pseudostem, lower content of chlorophyll a+b, and carotenoids, and higher amounts of vitamin C.
