    Opis:
    This article provides an analysis of translation methods of elements of culture in guidebooks, which belong to the so-called functional texts. There are two basic translation strategies of such lexis: 1) exotisation and 2) adaptation (most frequently combined with exotisation). The high frequency of the first strategy depends on the informative function of a given text. This function results in the lack of occurrence of adaptation, uncombined with exotisation. Moreover, the choice of the particular translation strategy is influenced by the following factors: the dynamic character of the translation norm and the impact of the tradition of interlinguistic relations.

    Rosa Alimpieva, professor of Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University in Kaliningrad, is known in Poland as a linguist, specialist in history of the Russian language and TS, but also as a great popularize of a Polish poetry and culture in Russia, especially in Kaliningrad Oblast. She translated into Polish from Russian selectes masterpieces of Polish poetry: poems of Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Adam Asnyk, Leopold Staff, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Czesław Miłosz, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. She decided also to translate into Russian some poems of her Polish friends Walenty Piłat and Krzysztof Dariusz Szatrawski. The translation has been acknow- ledged by Polish writers as very accurate and , but we think that the world of Polish poets (especially Mickiewicz) in Alimpieva’s translation is especially close to perception competence of the Russian reader.

    Opis:
    The main name and the set of the headings of Masha and the Bear animated film, as elements of the paratext, play an essential role in determining the characteristic properties of a product. They point to the national and cultural factors conditioning the animated film which manifest themselves on various (audio and video) levels of information transfer. The set of the headings is characterised by a high level of saturation with national and cultural elements such as sayings, phrases, quotations from classic literary works as well as from folklore, quotations from the songs which the Russian audience is familiar with, allusions to films and other television broadcasts. The translation of such names is more difficult and poses a real challenge for the translator. Three types of translation have been observed: literal translation, free translation and substitution. At the same time, it was neutralisation that was the leading strategy of translating headlines containing national and cultural elements. One of the justifications for the approach selected may be the type of the audience – children who – because of their insufficient cognitive experience – will not be able to decipher the coded connotations.
    Основной заголовок, а также комплекс названий серий мульт-фильма Маша и медведь как элементы паратекста играют принципиальную роль в определении характерных особенностей аудиовизуального продукта в целом. Они указывают на народно-культурную обусловленность мультфильма, которая проявляется на разных уровнях передачи информации (аудио и видео). Комплекс заголовков характеризуется высоким уровнем аллюзивности. В качестве названий встречаются пословицы, фразеологизмы, цитаты из классических произведений литературы, а также фольклора, строки из известных российских песен, модифици-рованные заголовки популярных телепередач. Такого рода названия представляют собой высокую степень сложности для переводчика. В результате анализа названий серий мультфильма и их переводов на польский язык выявлено три способа перевода: дословный, свободный (интерпретация) и замена. Ведущей стратегией является нейтрализация народно-культурной составляющей среды оригинала. Одним из объяснений выбранного пути можно считать тип главного получателя – ребенок, который в связи с недостаточным уровнем когнитивного опыта не расшифрует зако-дированную информацию.

    Piotr Kupryś was the first Polish translator to fully translate two classical works fundamental for Ukrainian literature. These were: Kobzar by Taras Shevchenko and Eneida by Ivan Kotliarevsky. Kotliarevsky’s Eneida is a vivid example of adapting diverse elements of oral folklore culture in modern Ukrainian literature. The article analyses types of translation procedures the translator applied when dealing with cultural context. Generally speaking, Kupryś followed two strategies of rendering cultural elements: domestication – in order to adapt the target text to target readers’ knowledge; as well as foreignisation with explanation – thanks to which he enriched target readers’ knowledge about reality and culture of the source text.

    The aim of the paper is to present the problem of transmitting cultural-determined personal names in literatury translation. The study focuses on various groups of such lexems: personal names, which were created onthe base of the model: name + patronimicum + surname; diminutive names; meaning names; folkand historical names and personal names of intertextual relationships. The emphasis is put on imagination of the translator and creative individual approach to each lexical element and its function in the text. The very important thing is the perspective of recipients with a different cultural background.

    This paper concentrates on the ways in which exoticisms should be translated from Polish to Russian. We focus on the exoticisms used in Cesarz and Podróże z Herodotem by R. Kapuściński. In this text we stress the need to preserve the local cultural coloring of a given exoticism in the process of translation. Moreover, we notice that a unified definition of the term exoticism is necessary, and the lack thereof makes it more difficult to single out exoticisms from among other borrowings. We also touch upon the issue of the so-called third culture while our interest in it results from the very nature of travel essays, which often acquaint the readers with exotic cultural realities.

    Cultural codes, that is elements of permanent perception and interpretation of reality in a given culture, have impact on the effectiveness of intercultural communication. An effective translation of these codes constitutes the core of international understanding on many planes, including the political and legal systems of particular countries, or to put it broadly - their legal cultures. The present article proposes a general discussion of the issue of translating cultural codes of legal Polish and Russian, as well as outlining ways to cope with difficulties occurring in the translation process.

    Joseph Conrad’s language has been subject to various analyses regarding its uniqueness stemming from the writer’s trilingualism. Scholars have traced diverse influences from the French and Polish languages in this writer’s artistic output. Nevertheless, the effects of such influences are not thoroughly discussed. This article attempts to take a critical look at the outcomes deriving from the appearance of phrases which may be classified as Polonisms or pseudo-Polonisms in two short stories Amy Foster and Prince Roman and their translations into Polish. In the former story, untypical phrasings which may have been calqued from Polish serve to emphasise the alienation of the character of Yanko, in the latter, expressions which are generally common for both English and Polish highlight both the distinctiveness of Polish culture and its affinity with the European cultural setting. Unfortunately, in the translations into the language from which such linguistic or cultural concepts originated, such effects are much less distinctive.

    Folklore phraseology was a inexhaustible source of linguistic measures for Ivan Kotliarevsky, as it allowed him to build humorous and satirical effects through introducing into his literary works colloquial, dialectal and jocular set phrases. The aim of this paper is to undertake comparative analysis of set phrases in the original and in the Polish translation of Eneyida in order to point out similarities and differences in these two languages. The author focuses on the translation strategies implemented to translate set phrases, and analysing particular non-phraseme word connections which very often replace set phrases in the target text.

    Ivan Kotlyarevsky’s Eneyida is a poem rich in paremic elements. The poem was considered a breakthrough in Ukrainian literature, not only because it was written in lively Ukrainian language, but, thanks to the author’s fascination with the folk culture and artistic traditions of previous eras, it also constituted a link between old and new Ukrainian literature. The aim of this article is to investigate the types of translation strategies used by Piotr Kupryś in the translation of Eneyida, especially those concerning paremic elements that are heavily influenced by cultural connotations. The analysis shows that Kotlarewski introduced existing proverbs, and also introduced new ones by processing others. In the Polish translation, Kupryś was not only obliged to preserve the content of the proverbs, but also to reproduce the plasticity of the images on which they were built. The techniques most widely used in his translation include domestication, exotication and tracing. It seems that the translator did manage to extract the meaning of the proverbs; he did not, however, always preserve their expressive and stylistic value, which was the basic element of building the satirical effect of the poem.
