Opis:
The article is an attempt to interpret a hardly known collection of poems by Walenty Bartoszewski, a Jesuit in Vilnius, published in reaction to the outbreakof the plague in Vilnius in the years 1629–1632, which constitutes the testimony of increased religiousness in the face of an epidemic. In the article, the author of the collection is presented, as well as his poetic oeuvre. Also, a brief description of the social background of those events is given. Then, other texts from the 16th–18th centuries, concerned with the topic of the epidemic are characterized. They include sermons, secular works, religious songs and prayers. The main part of the article is devoted to the interpretation of the collection by Bartoszewski in the context of the most important aspects of the volume Bezoar z łez ludzkich czasu powietrza morowego [Bezoar of Human Tears Shed at the Time of the Plague], which include: the manifestation of religiousness at the beginning of the 18th century, the realities of the epidemic depicted in lyrics, the vision of God and Christ, ways of protecting the faithful against the plague, and the intercession of the Mother of God.

Opis:
Two early modern Polish translations of “Poema de vanitate mundi” by Jakob Balde edited by Maria Kozłowska is an important publication from the perspective of research into Baroque religious poetry, especially the Saxon times. The popularity of Balde’s poem in late Baroque can be seen not only in its subsequent editions, but also in the references to it in the works of the contemporary religious poets, including Dominik Rudnicki and Karol Mikołaj Juniewicz. In the introduction to this edition the author presents Balde as a Jesuit poet, who subordinates his writing to didactic and moralistic objectives, but at the same time strives to engage the reader’s senses, following the principles of Ignatian meditation.

Opis:
My paper addresses the ways of presenting the Passion of Christ in the 17th century Polish passion messiads. Concentrating on the images of the flagellation of Christ in the narrative poems of Kasper Miaskowski, Abraham Rożniatowski, Wacław Potocki and Wespazjan Kochowski, I analyze the relation of the motifs used by them to the exegetic, the mystic, and the apocryphal traditions. Respectful of their original context, my interpretation of the fragments is supported by a thorough analysis of their structure and use of rhetoric devices. My research allows me to conclude that in order to approach the mysteries of faith, the authors of the messiads used symbolic language as a living faith tradition.

Opis:
Stanisław Jachowicz’s poetry for children is filled with religious themes and language, sometimes used unthinkingly but usually consciously. The “tales”, “novels” and “parables” he created contain the elements of traditional genres used in catechesis: the catechism, the sermon and the biblical parable. The subject matter of the poet’s fables is more complicated because of animals and objects that believe in God, pray and even achieve salvation, which frequently takes place while Jachowicz makes a huge effort for his didactic works not to become close to heresy.

The question dealt with in the paper is as follows: to what extent might the notion of “religious literature” be functional if applied both to the early modernliterature and the contemporary literary culture? Does it mean “sacred literature,” simply opposed to the “secular” one, whatever it might mean? The author’s suggestion is to use the notion of “religious literature” more consistently, depending strictly on the liturgical functions of the text (e.g. of prayers, hymns or homilies), while the term “sacred literature” should be used only with reference to the so-called “Sacred Books,” i.e. the Revelation recognized in a given religious system. The sense of the terms “pious literature” or “pious poet,” however, should be much broader, going beyond the limitations of religious functions of the text and reflecting a quasi-prophetic intellectual and moral status of the writer.

Opis:
The article presents the most important religious themes in Pieśni [Songs] by Nikodem Muśnicki, a Jesuit from Polotsk, who was active during the Enlightenment. His biography, as presented in the introductory section, places him among forgotten writers, representatives of classicism after King Stanislaus II, and is a starting point in the interpretation of his songs. The analysis of selected pieces, published in the volume Drobniejsze poetyckie zabawki [Smaller Poetic Toys] and those which remained in manuscript, clearly indicates that Muśnicki chose the most important religious problems as his object of poetic reflection. He is interested in God, man and the world. Within these themes he also analyses more detailed issues: the essence of the Supreme Being, the existential situation of the human being, the place of man in the universe, and, last but not least, relations of God and man. The poet’s works are an interesting example of Polish religious poetry during the Enlightenment.
