    Piotr Siemion’s novel Niskie łąki (2000) has been acknowledged by the critics as one of the most interesting texts depicting the experience of the generation of young Poles during the political breakthrough in the 1980s and 1990s. The author focuses on the Polish path to capitalism and deconstructs the key myths of that period, namely the experience of martial law, emigration for work and the birth of the free market. The paper discusses the multidimensional structure of the novel and stresses the role of the main character as the Other (the Other One). Employing this figure allows the author to maintain a distance from the described reality and to impartially look at it from the outside. The eye of the Other seems to function as a camera recording only facts and confronting them with the ‘norm’ that is in his consciousness. From this viewpoint, no character of the novel is an unblemished man, because the reality is changing all the time and old myths are being replaced by new ones. As a result, the novel seems to be an acute image of Poland in times of change.

    Opis:
    Andrzej Kuśniewicz (1904-1993) was an acknowledged writer whose works used to be popular and widely read, but after 1989 a number of them fell into oblivion. Both aesthetic and cognitive values have been retained – by and large – thanks to the novels which referred to the Habsburg myth in European literature, which was defined by the eminent Italian German specialist Claudio Magris. However, the Polish writer explored other ranges of his interests as well, for example the ones concerning his personal experience acquired after his stay in France (Witraż 1980). The writer dealt with subjects connected with events which took place in West Germany in the 1960s. They were reflected in his previous novel Trzecie królestwo, published in 1975. In spite of the writer’s complicated fate in the Polish People’s Republic, the work presents a huge breakthrough which happened a quarter of a century after the end of the Second World War in the politics of the FRG and in West German society in a very attractive literary form. At that time our western neighbors had to fundamentally redefine the conservative perception of their own history. In fact, to a large extent the situation had been initiated by the generation of people born in 1968 that took up the reins and started to rule the country. The author of the article attempts to present the struggle – embedded by Kuśniewicz – of the generation of perpetrators who faced difficult questions asked by their children and sometimes even grandchildren. To conclude, although the description provided by the Polish prose writer is not free from some simplifications characterized by extreme subjectivity, we must admit that the book is a valuable piece of evidence depicting a significant period in the history of Central Europe.

    Artykuł Die DDR in einer Autobiographie. Zu Werner Heiduczeks „Die Schatten meiner Toten” [NRD w pewnej autobiografii. O tekście Wernera Heiduczka „Cienie moich zmarłych”] jest wynikiem badań prowadzonych przez autora nad obrazem NRD w literaturze dokumentu osobistego (autobiografii) pisarzy z NRD po zjednoczeniu Niemiec w roku 1990. Prezentowany tekst jest analizą autobiografii niemieckiego pisarza Wernera Heiduczka „Die Schatten meiner Toten”, opublikowanej w Lipsku, w roku 2005. Właściwą analizę poprzedzają krótki portret pisarza oraz przyczynek o autobiografii jako gatunku literackim i jego roli w odniesieniu do tekstu Heiduczka. Analiza skupia się na skomplikowanym stosunku pisarza do NRD, jego ocenie najważniejszych wydarzeń w NRD: powstaniu 17.06.1953 oraz przełomu roku 1989, zachowaniu wobec wydarzeń wokół W. Biermanna w 1976 roku oraz własnym miejscu w społeczeństwie i polityce jak również życiu osobistym.
    The paper Die DDR in einer Autobiographie. Zu Werner Heiduczeks ‘Die Schatten meiner Toten’ [GDR in an autobiography. The text of the Werner Heiduczek’s ‘Shadows of my dead’] is the result of research conducted by the author over the image of the GDR in the literature of personal documents (autobiography) writers from East Germany after reunification in 1990. The present text is an analysis of the autobiography of a German writer Werner Heiduczek ‘Die Schatten meiner Toten’, published in Leipzig in 2005. The analysis is preceded by a brief portrait of the writer and the contribution of autobiography as a literary genre and its role in relation to the text of Heiduczek. The analysis focuses on the complex relationship of the writer to the GDR, his assessment of the most important events in the GDR: uprising of 17th June 1953 and turn of 1989, keeping the events around W. Biermann in 1976 and its own place in society and politics as well as personal life.

    W artykule przeanalizowano złożone i niejednoznaczne aspekty modernizacji,przedstawiony przez Stefana Żeromskiego w intrygującej, choć mało znanej powieści Promień (1898).
    This article analyses complex and ambiguous aspects of modernisation, depicted by Stefan Żeromski in his intriguing but rather obscure novel Promień [The Ray] (1898). The writer chooses a provincial town for his scenery – although based on Kielce, it is hidden with a fictional name – which experiences an industrial revolution in miniature. A railroad built in the area, old, solid shops and enterprises brought to death by the modern way of trade and a shockingly radical local newspaper ran by the novel’s protagonists are just a few most striking symptoms of that inevitable and unsettling process of change.

    W okresie zaborów władze austriackie pozwoliły w roku 1856 na utworzenie polskiego stowarzyszenia rzemieślników, łączącego wzajemną pomoc z działalnością kulturalno-oświatową. W ramach działalności „Skały” wyróżniono dwa okresy: paternalistyczny, do 1889 r., a także zdemokratyzowany, po zmianie statutu. W pierwszym okresie jego działalności prawo do pełnoprawnego członkostwa posiadali jedynie uczniowie rzemieślników będący licencjatami, a kobietom nie wolno było wstępować do Stowarzyszenia. Jego członkowie nie mieli nic do powiedzenia w kwestii wyboru organów zarządzających i podejmowanych przez nie decyzji. Powodem było to, że organizacja była bardziej jak braterstwo ludzi podzielających te same przekonania religijne. Dokonanie zmian w statucie w roku 1889 wprowadziło demokratyczne zasady funkcjonowania Stowarzyszenia. Od tego czasu każdy mężczyzna, wyznający wiarę katolicką, czy to rzemieślnik, czy przemysłowiec, mógł do niej dołączyć. Wybrano wszystkie władze organizacji. Celem Stowarzyszenia było kształcenie młodzieży katolickiej, pielęgnowanie wśród nich ducha religijnego i wychowanie ich na dobrych rzemieślników. Wiodącymi formami działalności były dokształcanie ogólne i zawodowe. Sfera kulturalna obejmowała działalność własnych grup artystycznych: chóru, orkiestry i zespołu teatralnego. Znaczącą rolę w polskim wychowaniu patriotycznym odegrały obchody rocznic narodowych: Konstytucji 3 Maja, powstań narodowych i unii polsko-litewskiej. Środkiem do osiągnięcia tego celu były także wieczory literackie poświęcone zasłużonym dla narodu polskiego poetom i pisarzom: Adamowi Mickiewiczowi, Kornelowi Ujejskiemu, Józefowi Ignacemu Kraszewskiemu i Henrykowi Sienkiewiczowi.
    In the times of the Partitions, the Austrian authorities permitted, in the year 1856, that a Polish association of craftsmen combining mutual aid with cultural and educational activity be established. Within the scope of the activity of 'Skała', two periods are distinguished: paternalistic, until the year 1889, and also democratised, after making changes in the articles of association in this latter year. In the first period of its activity, only be craftsman apprentices being bachelors enjoyed the right to become the full members, and women were not permitted to join the Association. The members of it had no say in the aspect of electing the governing bodies, or the decisions made by them. The reason for that fact was that the organisation was more like a brotherhood of people sharing the same religious convictions. Making changes in the articles of association in the year 1889 introduced the democratic rules of functioning the Association. Since that time on, anyone who was a male follower of catholic faith, be it a cratfsman or an industrialist, was permitted to join it. All the authorities of the organisation were elected. The objective of the Association was to educate catholic youths, nurturing religious spirit among them and educating them to become good craftsmen. The leading forms of the activity were general and vocational further training. The cultural sphere included the activity of own groups of artists: a choir, an orchestra and a theatre ensemble. A significant role in Polish patriotic upbringing was that played by the celebrations of national anniversaries: the Constitution of the Third of May, the national uprisings and the PolishLithuanian Union. The means of attaining this objective was also literary soirées dedicated to poets and writers having merits for Polish nation: Adam Mickiewicz, Kornel Ujejski, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and Henryk Sienkiewicz.

    Opis:
    The artistic output of Zdzisław Beksiński finds recognition all over the world. Not so long ago, his visual heritage was enriched by new, literary accomplishments – the collection of short stories written by the artist between 1963 and 1965. The present paper is an analysis of three most expressive pieces in terms of studied esthetics: Na końcu ogrodu, Centrala snów oraz Informator.Beksiński’s short stories are here placed in the context of postmodern melancholy characterized by affirmation of experienced emptiness the source of which was sought for in Beksinski’s generational experiences. On these grounds, a thesis is proposed where the holistic creative concept which merges visual and literary accomplishments is expressed by three figures: decay, repetition and ontological uncertainty. Not only is the object of the analysisa theoretical aspect of a worldview present in the literary works but it also functions as  a specific fictional-structural solution.
