    The article is devoted to Juli Zeh’s novel Unterleuten, which explores what happens in a small village outside of Berlin, when an energy company arrives with plans to develop a wind farm. Brutality surfaces in many forms, from harassment and deliberate cruelty to perverse acts of revenge. Two old men, a successful agribusiness man and a displaced comrade from the former GDR farming collective, reengage in past conflicts, and their twenty-year-long feud grows into a prime source of vicious ill feeling. The structure of the novel is like a literary kaleidoscope: Unterleuten is a place between past and present, east and west, city and province, civilisation and tradition, reality and fiction, true and false, winners and losers.

    While reconstructing the subject of fairy-like borderland I consecutively discuss the problems of literary topography as a spatial figure of experiencing evil, next releasing the conflict and creation of domesticated seats and internalization and projection of fairy-like evil. In the conclusion I emphasize the tension between internal and social maturation of the hero and the semantics of the threshold and transgression as a special way of lexical organization of the fairytale form referring these problems onto theoretical and analytical contexts of postmodern culture. Because while being on the borderland fairytale characters experience evil of mainly situational character I accept in my analysis the basic assumptions of the phenomenological-existential philosophy of Gabriel Marcel dealing with the situation in which evil is encountered and experienced by specific subjects.

    Presented article is an introduction to the discussion devoted to literary representations of borderland conflicts. Borderland understood as an imagined sphere of confrontation between various interests and social groups is presented in literature not only as space of peaceful coexistence of diverse communities and varieties but also as the domain of conflict and confrontation of social groups and individuals. It seems that so far the images of borderland conflicts have not been sufficiently reflected in literature studies. This article is an attempt to systematize detailed issues connected with these problems.

    The paper offers a comprehensive, synthetic account of the discourse on the subject of the Polish Eastern Borderland over the course of the last hundredyears. It analyses the ways in which the understanding of the notion of Kresy and “borderland”, as well as the strategies for presenting the term, have changed, including attempts to replace this category with other terms. Furthermore, the paper characterises the dynamics concerning the transformations of situational contexts that emerged in the period of the Second Polish Republic, developed during World War II, after 1945 (in the country and abroad) and continuing from the 1980s and1990s to the present. Significant interpretative perspectives include, among others, the trends in literary schools, the legends and myths of the Polish Eastern Borderland, the notion of the borderline of cultures, small homelands, and methodological phrases and breakthroughs (spatial turn, geopoetics, postcolonial criticism).

    Regiony graniczne UE zaliczane są do obszarów problemowych, posiadających niskie wskaźniki rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego, które wynikają ze złożonych uwarunkowań i specyfiki ich terytorium. Jednym z nich jest pogranicze polsko-słowackie posiadające liczne ograniczenia natury środowiskowej warunkowane położeniem na obszarze Karpat Wschodnich. Zmniejszeniu stopnia peryferyjności obszarów przygranicznych służą programy współpracy transgranicznej UE wspierające lokalne inicjatywy rozwojowe. Wpisują się one w realizację głównego celu, jakim jest poprawa spójności terytorialnej, społecznej i gospodarczej UE. Celem opracowania jest określenie możliwości rozwoju - w kontekście zmian społeczno-gospodarczych - obszarów przygranicznych woj. podkarpackiego, które ze względu na swą specyfikę środowiskową wymagają poszukiwania narzędzi wspierających ich konkurencyjność i zapewniających zrównoważony rozwój. Trwałe efekty podejmowanych działań może zapewnić współpraca różnych środowisk z włączeniem lokalnych społeczności oraz wykorzystanie właściwości i zasobów regionu.
    Cross-border regions of the European Union are regarded as problem areas. They are typically characterized by low rates of socio-economic development which are caused by complex territorial conditioning and specificity. One of such regions is the Polish-Slovakian border area with its various natural limitations imposed by the Eastern Carpathian location. The issue of decreasing peripherality of border regions is addressed by a variety of the EU pro-development cross-border cooperation programs. They also comply with the overriding objective of increasing territorial, social and economic cohesion of the European Union. The main of the paper is to determine the development opportunities – in the context of socio-economic changes of the cross-border areas of the podkarpackie voivodship which due to its environmental uniqueness necessitate identification of their competitiveness and sustainable development enhancenent policy tools. The long lasting effects of the programs can be ensured by cooperation among various local communities and taking advantage of the full potential of the regional resources.

    Artykuł podejmuje tematykę prawie nieobecną w rodzimych naukach społecznych, w szczególności w socjologii – kolejowych pasażerskich połączeń transgranicznych. Analizie poddano połączenia pomiędzy Polską a jej siedmioma sąsiadami, koncentrując się na liczbie kursów, ich kategorii i dostępności dla podróżnych, a więc na czynnikach, które – gdy chodzi o „rzeczywistość kolejową” – mają największy wpływ na społeczny rozwój pogranicza. Badanie przeprowadzono na podstawie kolejowych rozkładów jazdy pociągów obowiązujących w połowie 2019 r., traktowanych jako rodzaj dokumentu urzędowego. Sięgając do szerszych uwarunkowań społeczno-politycznych, a także do doświadczeń własnych autora, w tekście zaproponowano również pewne kierunki interpretacyjne dla obrazu wyłaniającego się z analizy. Prezentowane rozważania przynależą do obszaru zainteresowań socjologii pogranicza jako subdyscypliny socjologii zorientowanej m.in. na zjawiska społeczne zachodzące w przestrzeniach przy granicach państw.
    The article deals with the issues hardly present in Polish social sciences, particularly in sociology – passenger railway cross-border connections. The analysis conducted relates to such connections operating between Poland and its seven neighbours, with special attention paid to the quantity of trains, their categories and accessibility to travellers, i.e. to the factors which – as far ‘railway reality’ is concerned – tend to have the greatest impact on the social development of borderlands. The research was based on railway timetables valid in mid-2019, treated as a type of official document. By referring to broader socio-political circumstances as well as to the author’s own experience, certain interpretative suggestions following the results of the analysis were made here, too. The considerations presented are embedded in the sociology of borderland as one of sociology’s subdisciplines, oriented i.a. towards social phenomena occurring in areas adjacent to the borders.

    Celem opracowania jest próba odniesienia się do historiografii niewielkiego mikroregionu na styku dzisiejszych województw: lubuskiego i wielkopolskiego, który określany jest jako „Babimojszczyzna”. Perspektywa czasowa odnosząca się do wydarzeń I wojny światowej, sporów polsko-niemieckich, a także zmian w Polsce i Niemczech po 1989 r. wymaga poszukiwania nowego podejścia do narracji historycznych. Dotychczasowa historiografia tego złożonego pod względem stosunków polsko-niemieckich w I poł. XX w. mikroregionu nie wypracowała nowych ujęć. Problemem jest także brak realnych efektów w obrębie modeli badawczych wobec narracji polskich i niemieckich ostatnich trzydziestu lat. Omawiany region może stanowić zarazem ciekawy przykład dla innych podobnych obszarów historycznych.
    The aim of the study is an attempt to refer to the historiography of a small microregion at the border of today's provinces: Lubuskie and Wielkopolskie, called "Babimojszczyzna". The time perspective relating to the events of World War I, Polish-German disputes, as well as the transformations in Poland and Germany after 1989 requires a new approach to historical narratives. The thesis of the article is the assumption that the hitherto historiography of this complex microregion in Polish-German relations in the first half of the 20th century did not develop new approaches. Another problem is the lack of real effects under the research models on the Polish and German narratives of the last thirty years. Their lack is particularly noticed in the context of the condition of social memory in the vicinity of Babimost, where only the tradition of the Polish Uprising 1918-1919 and the struggle for Polishness is cultivated, without a broader context. The discussed region can also be an interesting example for other similar historical areas, which, like all borderlands, were the subject of natural osmosis rather than their contact.

    The article aims to present and analyse the concept of “birthplace” which combines different components such as topography, landscape and also cultural, symbolic and metaphorical meanings. The human attitude to a birthplace appears problematic and complex, and involves a need to create a more critical perception of own identity. My theoretical investigation is based on an analysis of Ignacy Karpowicz’s novel “Sońka” which deals with strong tensions between individual experience of the civilians and History of wars and violence, difficult relations between collective and individual identity/memory and their specificity regarding village community, ethnic conflicts connected to the Polish-Belarusian borderland and birthplace, as well.

    Opis:
    The paper concerns a book by Krzysztof Czyżewski entitled A Small Center of the World and the issues presented in it, namely those of borderland and province, of the merging of various cultures, nationalities, traditions, and religious beliefs within one space. Czyżewski is the initiator, founder, and for almost three decades an employee of the Borderland Foundation and Center in Sejny, as well as of the nearby International Center for Dialogue in Krasnogruda (both localities are situated close to the Polish-Lithuanian border). As a “practitioner of ideas”, as he tends to call himself, Czyżewski casts a new light on the issue of province by pointing out that thanks to caring for one’s own roots and for the local, it may become possible to prevent the provincialism of thinking, and that the possibilities of overcoming inter-human division accumulate in the „small centers of the world”. The paper does not only discuss the issues which are focused on in the book in question, but also refers to other works dedicated to borderlands and to the current cultural situation in Poland.

    Opis:
    The subject of the paper consists in the reflections dedicated to the creation of the inter-human “borderland”. The metaxú category (Greek: μεταξύ, in-between) serves this purpose. Derived from antiquity, it was interpreted by Simone Weil in her book La Pésanteur et la Grâce (Gravity and Grace). The study develops Weil’s concept, and at the same time it expands it towards linguistics. A list of five notions is proposed. They present different aspects of metaxú, such as relationality, borderlandness, pragmatism, ambivalence, and transversality, which point to the anthropological and social role of the “in-between”. These notions are discussed in the paper at length, and then referred to the linguistic communication, which is treated exactly as a metaxú sphere.

    The paper focuses on the various forms of collaboration of Krzysztof Czyżewski, the founder of the Borderland Foundation in Sejny, organiser of cultural events, poet and essayist, with Parisian Kultura. It discusses Czyżewski’s essays, published in the magazine between 1997-2000 which concerned the problems of Central and Eastern Europe and the issues connected with the borderland. The paper points to the idea, emphasized by Czyżewski, of multicultural dialogue and building open societies in the multicultural regions of Central and Eastern Europe after 1989 based on historical memory while at the same time overcoming the existing conflicts. It mentions the prizes awarded to Czyżewski by Jerzy Giedroyc and the fact that he is considered the continuator of the program of Kultura, promoting the strengthening of the bonds between Poland and its closest neighbours.
