Opis:
Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature is a fascinating area of research in past culture. It is still too early to claim comprehensive knowledge of it even though systematic work has been in progress for decades. The present issue of “Tematy i Konteksty” is the second collection of papers focused upon this current in old Polish literature. This issue is devoted to the relations of familiarity and universalism in Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature. The main emphasis in the papers has been placed upon the Brest Bible and biblical inspirations, homiletics and occasional literature, religious drama, religious confession, mysticism, meditation, religious prints and manuscripts.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the Polish religious printed matter from the 17th and 18th centuries (individual works and collections of texts), which shares the “clock” metaphor. The author focuses on Catholic and Arian literature, independent works and short forms, both poetry and prose. The texts analyzed are mostly pieces of advice and warnings helpful in the Christian life, centred around the Passion and funerals. The article presents the content, composition and function of these works, as well as the dual use of the clock theme in them: as an object which awakens and which measures time. The genological aspects of these works are also considered.

Opis:
The article focuses on the religious publications that were issued in Lvov in 1773-1800 by the printing press of the Lvov province, which belonged to Antoni Piller and later to his successors. Since the Pillers’ printing press was the only one active in the town between the latter half of the 1780s and the end of the 1790s, it accepted, apart from governmental printing orders, other commissions, including church and monastic ones. About thirty five religious texts were released by them. They were mostly prayer books and sermons, but also textbooks and religious education books, teaching guides for catechists, excerpts facilitating the understanding of the Gospel, as well as summaries of important Western European works that had an impact upon understanding the Christian religion and the debate of the existence of God.

Opis:
This article is focused on the criticism of the prophecies presented by Wojciech Bystrzonowski, an encyclopaedist and populariser of science, in his work Informacya matematyczna [Mathematical Information] (1743, 1749). The author discusses prophecies of sorcerers, physiognomy, palmistry, prophetic dreams and astrological predictions. He examines the cases of magical practices combined with religious beliefs, which he regards as dangerous manifestations of superstition. He also demonstrates that fortune-telling cannot be compatible with faith or the fundamental principles of rational reasoning. Furthermore, he emphasizes that for a critical evaluation of such predictions, the Jesuit rules for the discernment of spirits can be applied. The issues addressed in Bystrzonowski’s work are characteristic of the atmosphere of the intellectual change that took place in late Baroque and early Enlightenment.

My paper addresses the ways of presenting the Passion of Christ in the 17th century Polish passion messiads. Concentrating on the images of the flagellation of Christ in the narrative poems of Kasper Miaskowski, Abraham Rożniatowski, Wacław Potocki and Wespazjan Kochowski, I analyze the relation of the motifs used by them to the exegetic, the mystic, and the apocryphal traditions. Respectful of their original context, my interpretation of the fragments is supported by a thorough analysis of their structure and use of rhetoric devices. My research allows me to conclude that in order to approach the mysteries of faith, the authors of the messiads used symbolic language as a living faith tradition.

Opis:
Artykuł dotyczy selektywnej analizy wybranych utworów Alojzego Felińskiego w celu ukazania w nich odwołań do Boga, religii i wiary chrześcijańskiej.
The article focuses on a selective analysis of selected works by Alojzy Feliński to demonstrate the references to God, religion, and the Christian faith in his poetry. Considering the poet’s association with Krzemieniec, the article attempts to present the works that served as a pompous accompaniment to loyalist state sermons in the 19th century, which were a kind of supplicatory hymns addressed to God concerning Poland and its king. Attention is also given to the occasional speeches addressed to the youth, emphasizing the importance of religion in the lives of people at that time. The aim of the article is to provide evidence that Christian faith was one of the creative inspirations for Feliński, who wrote in accordance with the classical tradition.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to present the content of a few short brochures related to religious or rather quasi-religious elements which support the main messages of the leaflets. The range of the studied texts was defined in accordance with the notes made in Bibliography (Bibliografia) by Konrad Zawadzki who classified only four prints as early newspapers published in 1621 (in the national language). All of them in various ways concern the war between the Commowealth and the Ottoman Empire. In all of them their authors (mostly anonymous ones, excluding Marcin Paszkowski with his Sauromatian Flag [Chorągiew sauromatcka]) created an image of warfare waged within an imaginary field of combat – religion, therefore a reader does not only find here the struggling soldiers and knights but the followers of Catholic and Islamic faiths as well. And of course, each detail of these enunciations – in terms of religion – pointed out the winner: Poles for their fidelity to the Church. Such a conviction was apparently proved with a few peculiar foresights; e.g. differences between Christian and Muslim calendars – A.D. 1621 it was almost precisely a thousand years after the Muslim method of time reckoning began, which obviously should have meant the end of Turkish power, doomed then to a final collapse. There were more similar argumentations based on omens extracted from Christian tradition that have been confronted with Islam beliefs and they might have been showing – tendentiously – the real victors: Poles again. However only the facts (confirmed by the evidence from an eyewitness and participant of the battle) appeared the most important although their value was also shown with a Biblical scene – “the glad tidings” seemed to be like a dove returning to Noah’s ark (like Poland “floating” then – alone and without any help) with an obvious sign of the end of deluge… Predictions won for that time (fortunately) but their quality soon became – in the very near future – verified sorely (unfortunately). Other matters (contributions) were discussed, too – i.e. questions of the printing time of Sauromatian Flag and its borrowings, a background of an augury concentrating around the Equestrian Statue in the Augustaion in Constantinople and some other various details.
