Opis:
The purpose of the paper was to synthetically characterise the changes of spatial differentiation of industry innovation in Poland in 2005–2015 in the context of research problems of innovativeness with the use of the cross product. The availability of data limited the scope of the research. For example, innovative activity was presented through the analysis of the share of innovative units in the total number of industrial enterprises and the size of expenditure on innovative activities incurred by industrial enterprises. The analysis of the share of innovative products in the value of total production and net revenues from sales of innovative products in net revenues from total sales was also made. The analyses mentioned were presented against the research and development situation in Poland as a whole and by voivodeship. Research confirmed that significant spatial diversity distinguishes the spatial structure of innovation in Polish industry by voivodeship. Moreover, it is significant that innovative expenditures show low efficiency.Spatial structure of industry innovativeness in Poland was highly stable in the analysed period. The changes in the spatial structure were insignificant and reached only 4% in synthetic terms. More substantial transformations of the structure, often of an abrupt character, concerned only the selected features of industry innovativeness.

Opis:
The paper addresses the issue of spatial differentiation in the level of industrial innovativeness in new EU member states from 2008 to 2017, with a particular focus on Poland. The purpose of the study is to attempt to describe changes in the spatial patterns of innovativeness in new EU member states (so-called EU13) and to indicate the position of Poland against the EU13 by using simple vector calculus. The period of analysis resulted from the availability of data. The paper presents matters related to the innovative activities of industrial enterprises and research and development (R&D) in Poland and other new EU member states. Selected features of innovativeness are shown as a relationship between expenditure and effect. The research confirms that the spatial pattern of industrial innovativeness in the EU13 significantly varies spatially between states. It is noteworthy that in the analysed period, the level of innovativeness in the Polish economy was relatively low compared to all EU countries as well as among the EU13. Moreover, the high growth figures obtained by Poland in most of the analysed features related to industrial innovativeness deserve to be emphasised. In 2008–2017 spatial differences in expenditure on R&D in the sector of industrial enterprises as well as their effects were highly stable.

The processes of socio-economic development take place at the different-scale spatial systems within the geographical space (from the local through the national to the global level). The geographical space covers a diverse natural space, various potential of the socio-economic and cultural space, as well as active and passive relations that occur between their elements. One of the important parts of the socio-economic space is the spatial structure of industry whose fundamental element is an industrial enterprise. The theme of this discussion is the issue of the behaviour of an industrial enterprise in the spatial structure of industry in the light of Polish research in the field of industrial geography. Specific attention will be paid to the development and functions of industrial enterprise in the spatial structure of industry.

Opis:
The article underlines the integrative role of geo-information in support of policies and shaping of the concept of Smart City based on partnership. The movie Smart city Aarhus, presented at a conference in Gdansk on 25 September 2015 - Project Ecology Constructively3 - was an inspiration to write the article. To manage the space well, with the participation of the stakeholders interested in sustainable development of the territory, a complete, good quality information about the spatial policies is needed. The object of the research conducted in 2010-2012 was to present complex issues related to the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive in Poland in the subject of “land use” and the identification of relevant data sets, which should be made available in the established European Spatial Information Infrastructure (IIP). A summary of the results of qualitative research is presented, the author also shows the topicality of the posed thesis, most essentially associated with the lack of Polish definition of “planning document”, one of the main causes of reported problems. The article presents a reflection on the sidelines of the analysis of the results of the contract, the first in Poland, entitled “The Elaboration of Draft Standard Models of Planning Data and Metadata Profile for Planning Studies” (2011) and quotes statements from interviews of professionals (2011-2012).The current legal status has been presented and the elaborations of other authors were invoked in the article, showing the most controversial interpretations of the application of the regulations, and finally recommendations for further action were presented as the voice of the author in the ongoing discourse.

Opis:
This article aims to identify changes in the industry’s patterns in innovativeness and show its spatial diversity based on the example of the largest urban centres in Dolnośląskie Voivodeship. An assessment of the level of concentration of industrial activity was used as the basis for identifying these processes. The range of issues used for analysis depended on data availability, especially at the local level. The analysis of industrial activities’ location was carried out based on entities registered in Section C (Manufacturing) of the Polish Classification of Economic Activities. The spatial patterns of industrial innovativeness were presented using the classification of manufacturing according to R&D levels. The research results indicate significant changes between 2009 and 2019 in the spatial patterns for both the voivodeship and its urban areas regarding the industry’s concentration and specialisation. At the same time, this was accompanied by a decrease in industrial production. Dolnośląskie Voivodeship shows a significant spatial diversification in such concentration and specialisation. The patterns identified indicate the growing role of the area surrounding Wrocław as one of intensive infiltration of industrial activities from the main centre. These processes are also found in smaller urban centres of the voivodeship; however, this infiltration is selective.

The article is an interpretation of the novel Ciemno, prawie noc (It’s dark, almost night) by Joanna Bator. It focuses on the specific vision of Wałbrzych, a real city located in the South of Poland. The vision consists of many traditional and present-day patterns entitled to create spatial images. In her novel, Bator examines methods of presenting urban spaces in literature which leads her to constructing a representation of a non-town. Destruction of the emotional sphere of the human personality (the case of the narrator – main character) damages the possibility of habituating the sphere of existence (home, quarter, town, province).

Opis:
A key driving force and determinant of a country’s worth in the globalized world is inherent in its level of industrialization. Certainly, other dimensions are crucial and come into play, however, the infamous classification of nations into industrialized and non-industrialized has added substantial merit to the concept. Essentially, industrialization in Ghana was based on the premise of the production and processing of its vast natural resources from traditionally primary products to tertiary and finished goods. While the industry can boast of employment generation and a model of economic growth in the 1960s and 1970s, inadequate implementation of industrial policies has resulted in the consistent contraction of the manufacturing subsector. Manufacturing sector contribution to GDP declined from 36.69% in 2000 to 6.7% in 2012 and therefore is considered the weakest link in Ghana’s industrial drive. This paper examines the growth, spatial structure, and distribution of manufacturing industries in the Greater Accra region using districts as the unit of analysis. The Greater Accra region has traditionally been the focal point of Ghana’s industrial development accounting for 23.4% of all manufacturing establishment as of 2015, most of which are concentrated in the Accra and Tema Metropolitan areas due to obvious political, socioeconomic and mobility factors. Examining historical data from 1962–2010, we found that despite the overwhelmingly large localization of manufacturing industries delete in Accra and Tema Metropolitan areas, a relative spatial redistribution of manufacturing industries was evident in the peripheral district of the region. Furthermore, the change in distribution is reflected in the pattern of employment at the district level, which per our findings shows a relative diffusion from the core districts of Accra to districts located in the peripheries. The study also found that industrial policies, such as free trade zone initiative, decentralization policies, foreign investment and improvements in critical infrastructure, have resulted in the relative spatial diffusion of manufacturing industries. These findings are significant because they show how areas without previous manufacturing base have witnessed the emergence of some form of industry.

The paper is a critical literature review aiming at synthesising knowledge on shaping the service sector in urbanised areas. Starting from classical concepts of hierarchical service systems (Christaller, Lösch, Palomäki, Nowakowski) through considerations on the impact of teleinformatics on the services sector, to contemporary research on hierarchical -network spatial and functional structures (Ossowicz), the paper points to the role which can be played by local service centres in spatial planning. The five guidelines for urban planning describe crucial conditions which have to be met in order to generate a positive influence on land -use and the quality of life in urban neighbourhoods. The guidelines may be a starting point for empirical research and may play an inspiring role in local policy in urbanised areas.

This study deals with the development of industry which is one of the most important elements of socio-economic transformation in Turkey, its structural features, spatial distribution, as well as the factors that influence it. Industrialization movements started in Turkey in 1963 with planned development moves and accelerated as a result of the impact of liberal policies implemented, in and after the year 1980. Initially, industrial activities concentrated in metropolitan areas and subsequently started to expand to other areas in the country, in time with a view on regional development as a result of factors such as development plans, applied initiative policies, current raw material resources and transport. However, there are still major disparities in the distribution of the manufacturing industry, enterprises, employees, exporting and importing within the country. In fact, according to data for 2014, 43.9% of manufacturing industrial enterprises and 47.4% of employees are concentrated in the Marmara Region. The Marmara Region is followed by the Central Anatolian Region with 13.8% and 15.3% and the Aegean Region with 14% and 15.2% in terms of manufacturing industrial enterprises and employees respectively. Furthermore, 69.7% of exports and 76.9% of imports are processed in the Marmara Region which is followed by 9.6% and 7.7% in the Aegean Region and 8.2% and 7.4% in the Central Anatolian Region respectively. In terms of provinces, industry is concentrated in Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Bursa, Konya, Gaziantep, Antalya, Adana, Kocaeli and Denizli in Turkey. These provinces consist of 64% of enterprises and 65.7% of employees in Turkey. Data acquired from Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat) and the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology has been assessed with the use of ArcGis program.

The paper aims at identifying the main trends in the spatial patterns of automotive industry in Poland and their underlying changes. The analysis includes the distribution of employment in the sector by regions (voivodeships) in 1998 and 2015 on the basis of the Central Statistical Office data, as well as the location of greenfield plants built in the country since 1991 using the authors’ database. It is shown that after the general stability of the spatial pattern of production in the first transformation phase of the 1990s, a major shift towards south-western and western Poland together with the decline of the historically dominant region of Warsaw took place later. This can be explained by the success and/or decline of some leading producers and trends in the location of new plants dependent on the proximity to foreign markets, good road accessibility and industrial traditions (labour skills) in the main. These tendencies are in congruence with the general changes in the spatial pattern of Polish industry as a whole, with the growing role of Wielkopolskie and Dolnośląskie voivodeships and the decreasing share of Mazowieckie in the national industrial employment. The rapid expansion of automotive industry in Upper Silesian Industrial District has contributed to its successful restructuring.

Spatial component of number representation has been broadly investigated during the past 20 years. Numerous studies in cognitive psychology and neuroscience indicate that number representations are automatically mapped in space. The aim of this paper is to discuss potential applications of spatial numerical associations in the domain of education. Theoretically, investigating spatial numerical associations may be useful for: (a) diagnostics of Math deficits, (b) assessment in Math education and (c) developing trainings and tools aimed at improving Math performance. Keeping recent results in mind, it seems that diagnostic power of spatial numerical associations is limited; nevertheless, possibilities of developing trainings of spatial mapping of numbers may be a fruitful area of application.

The processes of technological  progress create new opportunities for economic, social and cultural growth, shape new relations between economic  entities and their environment,  and influence changes in the determinants  of entrepreneurship development.  These processes vary significantly in certain geographic locations, characterised by an enormous  diversity of natural, social, economic and cultural structures. As a consequence, this creates different opportunities  and different conditions for the development of entrepreneurship in certain spatial scales, from the continental scale, through national and regional to local scales. The article presents complex conditions  for the development of entrepreneurship, highlights its limitations resulting from institutional  barriers, and the importance of knowing the mechanisms of mutual relations between spatial systems and the influence of control instruments. The quality of central and local government authorities is of particular significance here, which do not always properly use the mechanisms of rational business support. A serious barrier to the development of entrepreneurship is the low quality of social capital, manifested in a lack of trust in institutional authorities and reluctance to engage in entrepreneurship and business development. The conclusions point out that further research should be developed that will take into account changing business conditions, with a defined strategic goal of raising the quality and standard of living, international competitiveness of the country and products in different market categories.

The main goal of the paper is to analyze changes in the spatial structure of industry in the Małopolska region. In particular, the research focuses on industrial change in the period of European integration and during economic crisis. On the basis of the analysis, it was showed that the spatial structure of industry is characterized by stability and has not changed in recent years. However, industrial dispersal and industrial development in the outer zone of the Cracow Metropolitan Area was observed. The Cracow Metropolitan Area, western parts of the region, and a few cities, e.g. Tarnów, Nowy Sącz and Gorlice, are still the most industrialised areas of the Małopolska region.

In the last ten years the sold production of fish processing industry increased over three times. Fish processing companies reveal a great ability to adapt to turbulently changing conditions of the market game. It happens this way, among others, as a result of creating competitiveness by widely understood consolidation processes and creating strong organizational and spatial ties of an international range. At the same time European market of fish processing guaranteed not only economic standards for already existing companies, but also became an impulse for creating new production units offering their products and services in the European Union market. The article attempts to determine the weight of factors and advantages of location for fish processing industry in Poland and their influence on the changes in the spatial structure. Besides the changes in distribution, the food processing companies in Poland were also characterized taking into consideration their concentrationin view of the theory of cluster.

Opis:
Industrialization is a process which is based on precise and quantitative measurements and contains different basic changes in the economic structure of a country or region. The structural characteristics and spatial distribution of the industrial enterprises established during the industrialization process which is one of the most important elements of the socio-economic transformation in Turkey within a historical process has been the object of this study. The aim of the study was to establish the positions and significance of one thousand (1000) large industrial companies in the industry of Turkey by using the framework of criteria based on sales from production which have been maintained by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry on a regular basis. The workplace and number of employees of the companies on a province basis, sector based division, realized exports and sales from product output, corporate entities, structures, spatial distribution and other characteristics were taken into consideration in the study.
