    Chiaroscuros of persuasion. Fragments of the ero//theo//r(e)tical discourse The article entitled Chiaroscuros of persuasion. Fragments of the ero//theo//r(e)tical discourse is a reflection concerning the rhetoric paradox, which, as an ingredient of septem artes liberales – was an efficient cognitive, understanding and thinking tool. Today, however, its position is described in the following article with the usage of “light” and “shade” metaphors. The rhetoric of various theoretical models (in the sciences and in the humanities) has become, in our times, a reason for asking the fundamental question about the status of the relation between language and reality, between cognition and interpretation. Does the desire for knowledge, the passion of thinking, indicate the existence of an objective and cognizable reality, or is it quite the contrary: does it prove that there is no non-linguistic reality?

    Somatic, musical and augural contexts of rhetoric Rhetoric is considering from the way of performance (gr. hipokrizis, lat. actio), called by the Cicero “the body language”. There will be a point of departure in all kinds of somatic obstacles that limit the orator, and also the voices of the background that make oration harder. Among the natural voices there is a specific case of animal sounds, in particular birds’ melodies which were intensively listened by ancient augurs and poets. There is also returning question of birds singing and human voice, especially in the age of ecology and the new media, and in context of cinema music and literature. From the perspective of the zoophilology a very special case is the voice of marsh warbler that can be associated with jazz improvisation and the sampling. In the conclusion author reveals the rhetoric community between different discourses that were inspired by the art of improvisation – the free jazz (Coleman), deconstruction (Derrida) and birds language (marsh warbler).

    There are many shades of the phenomenon of flirtation. We may speak about coquetry in literature, movies or advertisements. We may analyse both verbal and non-verbal aspects of the phenomenon in question in various periods, places and social groups. The main aim of the paper is to discuss only one “shade” of flirtation, namely conversations held by Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler from M. Mitchell’s novel Gone with the wind from the rhetoric point of view.

    According to aesthetic sociologism, film is the result of socio-economic determinants, and its shape is determined by the ideology of the group expressing itself. As addressed to a wide audience, it refers to the stereotypes and ideological matrices more than literature. Its reproduction is made easier by distribution by electronic media and the collective nature of production and reception. According to Industry-centric Adaptation Model, adapted texts represent secondary senders and gain new ideological meanings. The adaptation turns out to be a commodification of reading. It is inscribed in the needs of broadcasters and previously formed viewers’ expectations by the choice of actors dictated by their earlier roles, the use of humor, and the ideological function of colour and lighting. Ideological significance is also shaped by the music and the use, or lack of use of the native language of individual characters. Inscriptions on video copies are adjusted to customers’ expectations within linguistic and cultural circles. Functioning of the film camera determines that each film is deposited in the paradigms of Western civilization. When the reading is preceded by watching, ideological matrices can affect the reception of the book.

    The article is an attempt to describe the dispute in the theory of literature, as exemplified by a polemic between Professor Jakub Z. Lichański and Professor Michał Rusinek. The public dispute of these scholars was mainly conducted in the issues of some major Polish humanities periodicals at the beginning of the first decade of the 21st century and concerned the perception of rhetoric, which Prof. Lichański understands in a traditional but at the same time modern way, while prof. Rusinek applies conceptually sophisticated categories of postmodernity. Surprisingly, the method of describing this polemic is offered by classical rhetoric itself, which integrates textual, communicative and contextual aspects of each statement, demonstrating its persuasive, i.e.: cognitive, educational and aesthetic functions. Even in the case of a scientific dissertation, particularly, a polemical one.
    W artykule podjęta została próba opisania sporu w teorii (literatury) na przykładzie polemiki Panów Profesorów Jakuba Z. Lichańskiego i Michała Rusinka. Publiczna dyskusja tych uczonych prowadzona była głównie na łamach najważniejszych periodyków polskiej humanistyki w początkach pierwszej dekady XXI wieku, a dotyczyła sposobu rozumienia retoryki, którą prof. Lichański pojmuje tradycyjnie, choć zarazem nowocześnie, natomiast prof. Rusinek ujmuje retorykę w wymyślnych kategoriach ponowoczesności. Metodę opisu tego sporu przewrotnie oferuje sama retoryka (klasyczna), która integruje tekstowy, komunikacyjny i kontekstowy aspekt każdej wypowiedzi, ukazując jej perswazyjną, czyli poznawczą, wychowawczą i estetyczną, funkcję. Nawet publikacji naukowej, zwłaszcza polemicznej.

    W artykule pokazano liczne możliwości podjęcia analizy językoznawczej filmów zawierających wątki futurystyczne i cyberpunkowe. Dokonany przeze mnie wybór materiału badawczego był nietypowy. Większość wybranych seriali telewizyjnych nie stanowi klasycznego przykładu analizowanej przeze mnie literatury i jej adaptacji. Próbowałem odnaleźć i opisać popkulturowe produkty tylko zainspirowane literaturą futurystyczną i cyberpunkową; takie, które nie muszą spełniać wszystkich warunków stawianych pracom tego nurtu, np. Westworld (HBO), Doctor Who (BBC) and Mr. Robot (USA Network). Moim celem było zebranie i omówienie interesujących jednostek językowym i ich najróżniejszych złożonych zastosowań, które mogą interesować badaczy retoryki i językoznawców. Niektóre audiowizualne utwory opisałem jedynie pokrótce. Stanowić mają one zaproszenie do dalszych badawczych aktywności: Black Mirror (Channel 4 / Netflix), Extant (CBS).
    The purpose of this paper was to show a number of linguistic analysis possibilities of futuristic and cyberpunk movie themes. My choice of material was untypical; Many of my chosen TV-shows were not the classical example of analyzed type of literature and its adaptations. I attempted to find and describe popculture products inspired by futuristic and cyberpunk literature, which don’t have to meet all the conditions for being defined as cyberpunk work, for example: Westworld (HBO), Doctor Who (BBC), and Mr. Robot (USA Network). My goal was to collect and discuss interesting language units and their combinations which may be used as material in rhetoric and linguistic studies. Some of the examples used were only succinctly described as an invitation to further scholarly activities: Black Mirror (Channel 4 / Netflix), Extant (CBS).

    The article undertakes the problem of the rhetoric of walking (particularly the way of walking), travelling, experiencing the space and – what is most important – wandering figures as literary and anthropological devices that can be used for analyzing and interpreting literary spaces as well as private trajectories and individual paths. In accordance with the literary and social research of Jean-Francois Augoyard, Michel de Certeau and Joanna Ślósarska, the main thesis of the article is that the figures of speech are the same for both the language and the space. In addition, the article is an attempt of checking whether the way of walking and “tasting” the space (step by step) could inspire new possibilities of interpretation. It tries to apply wandering figures in practice, which is exemplified by Description of a struggle (1912) – one of the earliest stories by Franz Kafka.

    The new curriculum for Polish primary school emphasises strongly on rhetorical skills of pupils, along with their language skills. In the paper we confront those assumptions with the everyday practice in the classroom. We analysed the utterances of 7th-grade pupils, which required from them the argumentative skills as well as selecting literary examples, with the focus on the obligatory readings material. The subject of our analysis was the diversity in topics and examples provided by pupils in spontaneous utterances, analytical and deductive skills of pupils and their linguistic awareness. In result we point to the problematic areas and propose solutions.

    Opis:
    Polish Hegelians are one of the most important philosophical groups in Poland in the 19th century. Their work, today overshadowed by the accomplishments of famous Romantic poets, is still an interesting object of theoretical literary research. The treatises they wrote are characterized by extraordinary literariness, concerning both poetic language (numerous metaphors, or comparisons) and narrative orderliness, Culler’s “unusual composition of words (rollrock)”. Hence, the idea to analyse Cieszkowski’s, Kremer’s and Libelt’s writings. My considerations fit into a hermeneutic interpretative key, which allows me to interpret this type of work as a message from the past, at the same time defining the future. I refer to the following categories: dialogue culture, critical reading, rhetoric and intertextuality.
    Polscy hegliści stanowią jedną z najważniejszych grup filozoficznych w Polsce XIX wieku. Ich twórczość, dziś pozostająca w cieniu dokonań słynnych wieszczów romantycznych, jest jednak interesującym obiektem badań teoretycznoliterackich. Pisane przez nich traktaty odznaczają się niezwykłą literackością, przez którą należy rozumieć zarówno poetycki język (nasycenie tekstu rozlicznymi metaforami, czy porównaniami), jak i narracyjne uporządkowanie, Cullerowskie, „niezwykłe złożenia słów (rollrock)”. Stąd pomysł, by literaturoznawczej analizie poddać pisma Augusta Cieszkowskiego, Józefa Kremera i Karola Libelta. Rozważania wpisuję w hermeneutyczny klucz interpretacyjny, który pozwala mi na odczytywanie tego typu twórczości jako komunikatu z przeszłości, zarazem określającego przyszłość. Odwołuję się do kategorii takich jak: kultura dialogu, czytanie krytyczne, retoryczność i intertekstualność.

    The article is a linguistic microanalysis of the origins, status and history of a single phraseological unit ziarnko gorczycy ( the mustard seed). It is classified thematically in the Polish language as a floristic set expression of Biblical origin. A detailed report on this phraseologism is an opportunity to point out the rhetorical contexts of other Polish Biblical expressions and their lexicographic descriptions. As a lexical unit that represents a thematically specific phraseological group, ziarnko gorczycy allows for additional linguistic and cultural research that points to the pictures of the Biblical world entrenched in the Polish language.

    The introductory text discusses the contents of the yearbook and points to the directions of analysis and interpretation undertaken in the sketches and studies contained therein. The articles combine meanings of great imaginational metaphors of THEATRE and COSMOS as certain universes. Developing the idea of Hans Blumenberg, one can say that the realism of metaphors (including theatrical and cosmological studies) is the realism of rhetoricality – times, artistic trends, creators. (Re)definitions of the terms: rhetoric, rhetoricality – constitute the second thematic circle touched upon in texts, alongside categories such as performativity or transmediality. These phenomena do not function outside the genres of literary, scientific and para-scientific statements, therefore the third area of investigation in the articles concerns genological reflection (especially in relation to: academic mystery novel, theater novel, lyric cycle, anthology, “private” genology of Stanisław Barańczak).
    Tekst wstępny omawia zawartość rocznika oraz wskazuje na podjęte, w szkicach i studiach w nim zawartych, kierunki analiz i interpretacji. W artykułach konweniują sensy wielkich metafor wyobrażeniowych TEATRU i KOSMOSU jako pewnych uniwersów. Rozwijając myśl Hansa Blumenberga można powiedzieć, że realizmem metafor (w tym metaforyki teatrologicznej i kosmologicznej) jest realizm retoryczności – czasów, nurtów artystycznych, twórców. (Re)definicje pojęć: retoryka, retoryczność – stanowią drugi krąg tematyczny poruszany w tekstach, obok takich kategorii jak performatywność czy transmedialność. Zjawiska te nie funkcjonują poza gatunkami wypowiedzi literackiej, naukowej i paranaukowej, dlatego trzeci krąg rozważań w artykułach dotyczy refleksji genologicznej (szczególnie w odniesieniu do: akademickiej powieści kryminalnej, powieści teatralnej, cyklu lirycznego, antologii, „prywatnej” genologii Stanisława Barańczaka).
