    L’autore dell’articolo si concentra sui problemi che riguardano il coronimo Italia e il suo equivalente nella lingua polacca, Włochy. Descrive i significati e le ipotesi sulle etimologie del coronimo dal punto di vista sincronico e diacronico. Confronta l’uso delle varianti Włochy e Italia in polacco con riferimenti culturali all’origine delle due forme risalenti all’antichità prelatina, nel caso d’Italia, e a quella germanica e slava, nel caso di Włochy, confuso spesso con il suo paronimo Wołochy. Segnala la problematica della transonimizzazione del coronimo Italia nei processi della formazione di antroponimi e crematonimi e del loro funzionamento pragmatico nella comunicazione. Estrae un campione di antonomasie classiche e nuove del toponimo Italia. Nel caso di queste ultime si tratta, nella maggior parte delle occorrenze, dell’assegnazione delle valenze stereotipate all’immagine racchiusa nell’antonomasia in forma di slogan pubblicitari evocativi.
    Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badania onomastycznego choronimu Italia i jego ekwiwalentu w języku polskim – Włochy. Autor wskazuje znaczenia onomastyczne i kulturowe oraz przywołuje hipotezy dotyczące choronimu z punktu widzenia synchronicznego i diachronicznego. Zestawia użycie wariantów Włochy oraz Italia w języku polskim z nawiązaniami kulturowymi do źródła obydwu form – w przypadku Italii sięgającego starożytności prełacińskiej, w przypadku Włoch i paronimu Wołochy – cywilizacji germańskiej i celtyckiej. Sygnalizowana jest ponadto kwestia transonimizacji choronimu Italia w procesach słowotwórczych antroponimii i chrematonimii oraz ich funkcjonowania pragmatycznego w komunikacji. Autor omawia przy tym serię antonomazji klasycznych i nowych toponimu Italia. W przypadku tych ostatnich zazwyczaj chodzi o nadanie wartości wyrażającej stereotypy dotyczące Włoch, np. poprzez treść sloganów reklamowych nawiązujących do obrazów konceptualnych kojarzonych z Włochami.

    Taking a synthetic approach, the author of the paper presents the explanations of the etymology of the geographical name Gniezno, which is present in historical literature and linguistic works, and has been the object of interest since Middle Ages for chroniclers, and later for historiographers and linguists. Moreover, the author discusses the form of this toponym, explains the changes it underwent, and presents hypotheses concerning its motivation.

    The article presents a description of the Old Polish nominal derivatives with the suffix -ota in terms of their etymology, word–formation and semantics. In addition, the issue of the productivity of nouns was raised – the words that retain lexical continuity in the history of the Polish language from Old Polish to modern Polish were discussed along the derivatives that have not survived in the Polish lexicon until today.

    This article is an attempt to characterize the name Krystyna from the onomastic-theological point of view. The presented linguistic analysis is diachronic. On the one hand, it focuses on the presentation of this anthroponym as a baptismal name on the background of nationwide and regional naming traditions, and on the other, describes its popularity in religious names. The study also includes geography and frequency data from individual regions of Poland.

    The article offers an insight into the etymology of the Polish word pacynka with various meanings. There are several proposals for determining the origin of pacynka with the meaning ‘hand puppet’. These proposals are presented here after tedious historicallanguistic, dialectal and non-linguistic research. Many possibilities were considered, many premises were examined. Unfortunately, the presented analyses show, however, that none of the solutions is satisfactory. Every one of them has serious flaws. It is also very doubtful that the rightful, well-documented, and credible etymology of pacynka will be found soon.

    The primary aim of the prospective etymological dictionary of Polish dialectal plant names is to trace the origin of selected Polish dialectal wild plant names in the context of other Slavic and European languages. What is more, the dictionary will present the history of Polish dialectal plant names, their chronology, semantic motivation as well as their semantic evolution. The beginnings of entries will consist of two elements: the Latin scientific plant names and the Polish scientific plant names, which are necessary for the identification of the species. Each entry will comprise all dialectal names for a given species, which will be grouped (together with metaphorical names) according to their semantic motivation. The publication will encompass various registers of plant names (Latin scientific names, Polish scientific names, Polish dialectal names, Slavic names, European names).

    The article concerns the semantic development of the compositum obieżyświat ‘a person who likes to travel a lot’. It is interesting that the first attestation of the word in Old Polish (from the 15 th century) had a botanical meaning ‘Bupleurum rotundifolium L.’. The form obieżyświat was then the translation of the Old Latin plant names garowaga and girambula meaning ‘something that moves around’. The contemporary meaning of the compositum obieżyświat appeared only in the second half of the 19 th century.

    Opis:
    The author discussed a few sexualisms – names of sexual body parts. He excerpted lexical material from Polish historical studies from the 19th century and the beginning the 20th century. In the article the author presented the provenance of some expressivisms. He analysed less familiar and forgotten names of breast (bust), vulva (vagina) and male member (penis): i.e.: jabłuszka (‘apples’), bufory (‘buffers’), fujara (‘ninny’), flet (‘flute’), węgorz (‘eel’), mona (from Italian), bilkałe (from Yiddish). Mostly studied words is neo-semantism, less often – borrowings. The author put the analyzed words in the context of linguistic and cultural taboos (he mentioned euphemization and vulgarization). The text is inviting to join a discussion; some observations of the author are provoking to debate. The author presented the etymology of this vocabulary, but he also hypothesized the origin of several lexemes.

    The article explains the etymology of two surnames (Cyfus, Stynka / Stinka) and one nickname replacing a surname very popular in the region (Karaśniki). All anthroponyms occur in Edward Cyfus Warmian saga, which is popular not only in the region. A few recipes based on stynka and karaś, fish widely used in the region of Warmia and Mazury before WWII are attached to the text due to the reason explained in the article.

    The paper, inspired by the apostolic exhortation Amorislaetitia (2016) by Pope Francis, is devoted to the notion of tenderness in the Polish language, as compared with its equivalents in other European languages, mentioned in the translations of Pope Francis’ exhortation: Italian tenerezza, French tendresse, English tenderness, German Zärtlichkeit, Russian nežnost’. Etymologies of these words, not only from the Romance languages, but also German and Russian names, are associated with the notions like gentleness and fragility, which refer to the attitude towards another person, expression of the feeling, as well as the gentle way of treating another person. In that respect, Polish differs from the other languages. The image of tenderness shaped by the Polish word czułość (etymologically connected with the verb czuć – tofeel) directs attention to the aspect of sensitivity and empathy with another person, focusing on the condition, situation in which the person finds himself/herself, as well as their needs. It is an important aspect, which is underestimated during the first reflection on this notion, as it is dominated by the meaning of expression of the feeling.
