    The processes of socio-economic development take place at the different-scale spatial systems within the geographical space (from the local through the national to the global level). The geographical space covers a diverse natural space, various potential of the socio-economic and cultural space, as well as active and passive relations that occur between their elements. One of the important parts of the socio-economic space is the spatial structure of industry whose fundamental element is an industrial enterprise.The theme of this discussion is the issue of the behaviour of an industrial enterprise in the spatial structure of industry in the light of Polish research in the field of industrial geography. Specific attention will be paid to the development and functions of industrial enterprise in the spatial structure of industry.

    The structure of information streams defines the social-psychological atmosphere in a district, a city or a region. The main data carrier are people. Thus, the structure and intensity of flows of people is a defining factor of a social-psychological background for development of territories. A set of historical examples prove it. Will depression, or growth and development reign in the territory? Will the development have a sequenced character, or will criminal tendencies start to prevail? The nature of development of territories depends considerably on how flows of information will be organized.

    Jedną z ważnych konsekwencji kryzysu gospodarczego dla europejskich przedsiębiorstw produkcyjnych jest pojawienie się zjawiska tzw. relokalizacji działalności produkcyjnej i związana z nią bezpośrednio zmiana struktury przestrzennej działalności badawczo-rozwojowej (B+R). Zmiana struktury przestrzennej w aspekcie działalności B+R uwarunkowana jest wieloma czynnikami, spośród których najważniejsze są: czynniki ekonomiczne (w tym ulgi i dotacje na działalność B+R, aspekty kosztowe), czynniki technologiczne (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem bliskości jednostek naukowych i centrów transferu technologii), czynniki kulturowe (w tym związane z koncepcją społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu w przedsiębiorstwach), czynniki społeczne i demograficzne (powiązane z potencjałem demograficznym poszczególnych lokalizacji), czynniki administracyjno-prawne (w tym otoczenie instytucjonalne). Celem pracy jest identyfikacja i analiza podstawowych kierunków i uwarunkowań zmiany struktury przestrzennej działalności B+R w europejskich (w tym polskich) przedsiębiorstwach, (szczególnie) działających w branży motoryzacyjnej i lotniczej (grupa branż high-tech).
    One of the important consequences the economic crisis had on European production is the phenomenon of relocation of production and the directly associated change in the spatial structure of research and development (R&D). Changes in the spatial structure in terms of R&D activity are conditioned by many factors, among which the most important are: economic factors (including incentives and grants for R&D, cost aspects); technological factors (with particular regard to the proximity of research units and centers of technology transfer); cultural factors (including those associated with the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility in companies); social and demographic factors (related to the demographic potential of each location); administrative and legal factors. The aim of the paper is the identification and analysis of basic trends and determinants of changes in the spatial structure of R&D in the European businesses, (especially) operating in the automotive and aviation (high-tech group) industries.

    Opis:
    The aim of our paper is to offer a brief survey of the stages of development of industrial productionin Hungary and the transfomation that followed the changing of Hungary’s political system, as well as the maintrends in the contemporary process of re-industrialization. Hungarian industry has long traditions; as early asthe beginning of the 20th century, in certain branches, it was among the leading countries in the world. Afterthe fall of the centrally planned economy of the communist system and following the crisis treatment policiesof the post-communist years, Hungarian industry, today, has to survive in an open economy. The process ofre-industrializaton in Hungary is, basically, an integral part of global industrial change while, at the same time,it is largely dependent on local industrial developments. The volume indices, the value of industrial investmentsand the number of employees in industry, are all indicators of a positive change. The processing industryrepresents a considerable proportion of industrial production in Hungary and, in addition, vehicle manufacturingis the most dynamically developing segment. At the same time, industry in Hungary can still be characterizedby a dual structure; more than two thirds of its production value us produced by large companies.Small- and medium-sized companies have the possibility of being integrated into the production structure assuppliers. Some of Hungary’s traditional industrial branches have deteriorated, while other segments havebeen able to change their structure and become dynamic again. The main focus of industrial production – dueto capital investments by foreigners – has shifted towards the west, and the largest portion of its productionvalue now comes from Hungary’s western and central Transdanubian regions. The process of re-industralizationis beneficial for those regions in which there is an adequate and ready supply of human resources.

    In the process of shaping particular academic disciplines, there is a need to synthesise the existing research results and on their basis propose new methodological approaches and indicate the possibility of applying new directions of theoretic-cognitive and application research. This is the idea to which the theme and purpose of this paper refers. It proposes a new holistic research concept. The first part of the article reviews the hitherto research problems concerning the operation of an industrial plant (enterprise). Presented are the changing research concepts that initially treated the industrial plant as a landscape element, and then as a production plant affecting the processes of industry concentration, as well as socio-economic and cultural changes of the surroundings. In the second part, in the light of the theory of the dynamic system, the assumption was made that an industrial enterprise is not an isolated element of geographical space, but one of its functional components. Its role changes under the influence of endogenous and exogenous factors, as well as in the process of civilisation development. Using the idea of a dynamic system and the model of the functioning of geographical space, a new, holistic concept of research into the operation and development of an industrial enterprise is proposed. It includes various relationships: between the enterprise and the elements of geographical space (natural, socio-economic, cultural), between the rules of economic development, between different functional types of enterprises, competitive, between the categories of the environment, between the power elites and types of policies. The proposed model approach makes it possible to define various relations with the enterprise and allows for a comprehensive understanding of its functioning in a diversified surroundings, and it provides for the definition of a more precise strategy for its development.

    “standing” and “lying” enterprises
    Opis:
    Much that has been taking place in today’s Irkutsk is quite typical for cities of post-Soviet Russia. Irkutsk is suffering from drastic structural changes: in its macro-geographic position and international links, in the structure of production, in its postindustrial (non-production) functions, in the system of regional development. The total estimation of changes should be positive. But we can see a lot of losses. Some of them seem to be temporary, but there are also losses caused by the market character of the reforms themselves.
