Opis:
Blessed John Paul II has very clearly recognised the signs of time. He has also observed the destructive impulses in the West societies during the past several decades and has consistently pointed out in his encyclicals that in its search for identity and meaning, modern humanity was not able to find a purpose and reason for living. His encyclics are precious gifts and directions for the Third Millenium. The most important aspects of his teaching are: Christ in the centere, co-workers of Kingdom of God, anthropology, reason and faith, defending life, Ut unum sint - the commitment to ecumenism, Totus tuus - the life of faith.

Opis:
Pope John Paul II in his oral and written teaching emphasised that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of every human being and the same time underlined the value and dignity of every person, as well as his/her calling. In the 21st century, it is still worth recollecting the depth of teaching of John Paul II, especially the truth about the human being and his/her vocation through the mystery of the Redeemer. Therefore, this article will present some points from the documents written by Pope John Paul II, which refer to the Christian vocation of a lay man.

Pope John Paul II frequently describes humans in terms of personal being. One could say that this is one of the most fundamental aspects in his teaching. This text analyses the anthropology underlying his papal teaching in the context of the modern world and modern family life. The author emphasizes that the contemporary context reflects a multifaceted  crisis  affecting  humans.  The text explores a core aspect of Pope John Paul II’s teaching in his vision of the family, which is the issue of how to understand the human being as a person. Fundamentally the family is presented as a communion of persons, then a person is shown as the primary determinant in family education.

Opis:
Many young men and women are often confused when it comes to choosing their vocations and careers. According to Pope John Paul II in PastoresDaboVobis, “Each Christian vocation comes from God and is God’s gift. However, it is never bestowed outside of or independently of the Church. Instead it always comes about in the Church and through the Church a luminous and living reflection of the mystery of the Blessed Trinity.” What churches are doing with youth is commendable. Pope John Paul II earned the confidence of young people because he took them seriously. They sensed that he understood their concerns. He challenged them to give their lives to Christ. He appealed to their high ideals, inviting them to take a lead in the New Evangelization. Amidst the contemporary challenges facing young people, it would be appropriate to find ways of helping youth discern God’s call in their daily struggles. This implies learning to discern God’s voice hidden in the chaos of other worldly voices. The worldly allurements seem to have a great impact amongst youth. They therefore require some guidance from their parents and spiritual leaders in order for them to make the right decisions. This article looks at how Pope John Paul II treated the issue of vocational discernment among young people.

Opis:
Pope John Paul II in his teaching on marriage had not limited the issue only to the principle that matrimonial consent makes marriage, but he put a real challenge in front of the canonists stating that the proper understanding of the consent may not be reduced to a certain historical patterns, but must be developed on the basis of anthropological and legal sciences. The article discusses four issues. Firstly, the author engages in the issue of impoverishment of ius in corpus as an essential element of the contract of marriage. Then, she sketches the view of the Second Vatican Council on matrimonial consent as a mutual gift of one person to another. Subsequently, the author deals with the influence of personalism on the legal dimension of marriage. Finally, she presents the personalistic criteria in the Magisterium of John Paul II and its immediate legal dimension.

During his many journeys and speeches in his teaching, John Paul II proved that spiritual ecumenism is a sine qua non for all ecumenical activity. He is the „soul” of all ecumenism. Spiritual ecumenism, thanks to conversion of the heart, holiness of life, individual and community prayer for unity, becomes a clear criterion for the existence of a genuinely Christian ecumenical attitude.

Through this methodology the paper argues that Pope John Paul II was the defender of Christianity. The Twentieth Century provided the religious and irreligious alike with tremendous challenges in regards to belief. Evil and carnage were pervasive and the Church was in decline. In that cultural moment rose an interpreter of that challenge who theodicy was clear and efficient in answering the complex challenge of evil in the modern world. John Paul II, more than almost any other figure of the age, addressed the vexing issue of evil in the modern world. In the corpus of his writing mankind comes to know evil through an act of memory, remembering from where evil sprang, and what evil has done in man to separate him from his creator. And mankind comes to terms with identity of evil as seen and experienced through the act of suffering. Through processing memory, and examining identity, mankind can discover how Jesus Christ’s work on Calvary places us at the threshold of victory.

Ewangelia św. Jana

Opis:
Pope John Paul II introduced the expression of the “Feminine Genius” in his Apostolic Letter Mulieris Dignitatem of 1988. If this characteristic belongs to all women in history, there must be traces of it in the Gospel. The article verifies that this is the case in the Gospel of John. Indeed, taking a closer look to the different encounters between Jesus and individual women, we see that the latter have a specific influence on the action of Jesus and participate in a particular way in the mission of Jesus. Two key ideas can help us clarify in which way these women participate in Jesus’ mission. The first is the fruitfulness of fait h. Those who believe are born from God himself (1:13), through faith in Christ. This is particularly the case for the Samaritan woman (4:4–42). Her life changes when she comes progressively to faith in Christ: “could he be the Christ?” (4:29). The second key idea is the prophecy of the High Priest Caiaphas: “Jesus was to die for the nation and not for the nation only but also in order to gather into one the scattered children of Go d.” (11:51–52). Again, the Samaritan woman can serve as an example. She goes back to her town and brings her fellow Samaritans to faith in Jesus (4:39: “Many of that town believed in him”). They represent the first fruits of the great eschatological harvest, the gathering of those who believe in Jesus. Both ideas can shine a light on the specific mission of women in the Fourth Gospel. From Mary in Cana or at the foot of the cross to Mary Magdalene at the tomb, from the Samaritan woman to the adulterous woman and the sisters Martha and Mary, they all influence Jesus in his specific mission of arousing faith and gathering the scattered children of God. These encounters will help us to understand more concretely what John Paul II meant by Feminine Genius and what the role of women in the mission of the Church could be now.

Opis:
This article is a description of the current situation of the family from a Christian perspective and is divided into three chapters according to the method of the catholic social teaching: see judge, act. In the first part, a analysis of reality is presented, that is a sociological view of the situation of the family in the European countries. The outline of the situation of the family is shown in three dimensions (socio-cultural, political and economic). The second part briefly treats the Catholic teaching on the family, especially their social significance according to John Paul II.. The third part formulates practical conclusions to the question of what we can and should do to promote the family. It is the aim of Christian social ethics – as an instrument of evangelization - to draw adequate conclusions resulting in effective actions of Christians. It is about building bridges between theology and the challenges of the present. Without a doubt, the family is not just a relic of the past, as it was provocatively formulated in the title, but it is, and will continue to be, the foundation of the future.

Opis:
The Author of the article assumes that the charisma of John Paul II – at least in the symbolic sphere – has impeded intensifying trends in Polish society toward moral permissivism and relativism in everyday life. In Polish society, the image of John Paul II remains not only as a moral authority and a model, but above all, he is seen as a person who throughout his whole life proved his worth as someone important to the core of Polish society. As an authority linked to the sacred sphere, he was, at the same time very human. Even among those who believe that in Polish society there are essentially no authorities left to look up to, one can find many people who are still inclined to recognize the Polish Pope as a significant moral authority. There is no doubt that John Paul II had a positive influence on the religiosity and general image of the Church in Poland, even though it is somehow difficult to measure that empirically. Experiences related to the Pope’s illness, and later, to his death had a significant impact on many Poles from throughout society. One can question whether Polish Catholicism with its folk and mass nature will retain its prevailing character, now when Pope John Paul II is gone. Even if the impact of John Paul II on Polish moral and religious awareness will be decreasing, it still will be important and significant for some period of time. The strong impact of this exemplary Polish Pope is also going to slow down the secularization process of Polish society. All sociological data indicate that the influence of John Paul II on religiosity in his homeland will last for years to come, and hence, Poland will probably remain as a “specific case” in Europe with regards to the role religion plays in society.
